Cable channel TNT has decided to cancel Men of a Certain Age after two seasons on the air.
Starring Ray Romano, Andre Braugher, and Scott Bakula, Men of a Certain Age follows the lives of three best friends as they face the realities of middle age.
Having debuted in December of 2009, the first season of Men attracted a 1.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 3.2 million total viewers. While the season started off strong, viewership quickly dwindled. Still, that was enough to see it renewed for a second season.
Year two kicked off last December to a 0.6 rating and 2.4 million viewers, essentially matching the lowest-rated episode of season one. The numbers got even worse.
TNT split year two into a pair of half-seasons with six installments each. The first half averaged a poor 0.5 demo rating with 2.16 million viewers. The second half didn’t bring any better news, garnering a 0.4 demo and 1.59 million.
With numbers like these, it’s no surprise that TNT has decided against ordering season three. The July 6th installment ends up being the defacto series finale.
A statement from TNT explains it this way: “TNT has been proud to be a part of Men of a Certain Age for two seasons. While the show has featured great storytelling and impeccable performances, the audience simply hasn’t built to the point where we can continue the series. This was an extremely difficult decision for us. We wish Ray Romano, Mike Royce and the terrific cast and crew of Men of a Certain Age the very best and look forward to exploring new programming possibilities in the future.”
What do you think? Are you sorry that Men of a Certain Age has been cancelled? Why do you think many viewers stopped watching?

I loved the show. So smart, intelligent, funny, kind of open and hidden humour. Fantastic friendship, awesome dialogues. Each i the three characters a gem. So sad it had only 2 seasons.
This show had the best storytelling. The acting was superb – Ray Romano’s range blew me away. And, of course, we already knew that Andre Braugher was a first class actor. Scottt Bakula was so true in his character. HOW could this show be cancelled? The supporting actors were all terrific as well. Honey Boo Boo goes on and this fine work is canceled. Can’t believe it.
It was one of the best shows on TV. There is no other show like it in terms of subject matter and general “feel” – a contemporary show that works without murder and mayhem. It’s a truthful show about men-of-a-certain-age and the people in their lives. I agree with Ran, the show needs to move to a new network!!!
[…] TV show dates: December 7, 2009 – July 6, 2011 Series status: Cancelled […]
I absolutely loved the show! I tuned it to it weekly and watched it with my husband. I informed him when the first couple of episodes had aired that ‘since I enjoy this show, it is bound to be cancelled.’ Unfortunately, I am reading it online that it is true. Shame on TNT for pulling such a great scripted program with three great male actors who can act!
Loved the show. So sad that the discriminating viewer loses on this one.
Loved the show, although I do not fall into the targeted viewer profile. So hate to see everything on tv be reduced to what draws the general public. Glad there are still movies for the discriminating viewer. Wish the same for TV.
This was one of the best shows on TV. My wife and I looked forward to this show every week; Thye stars and the storyline were just great! We will certainly miss them!
What a shame, here in Australia we have just come to the end of Season 2 only to find out it was cancelled. Come on USA viewers, not racy enough !!. It was great to watch a show instead of the soft porn that is on TV.
They killed it by splitting it up in 2 seasons in 1. that was the dumbest thing I ever heard of . by the time you got into it it was over. too bad it had potential. I was happy to watch a non Cop, Lawyer, Reality show that dominates the airwaves anymore………
HEY I GOT IT! MAYBE IT NEEDS ANOTHER NETWORK
totally bummed!!!!! such a great show. I was just getting into it. BUMMER
[…] you were upset by the recent cancellation of TNT’s Men of a Certain Age, you’re not alone. Many viewers are upset that there […]
This is the best show not to make the cut. I’m bummed.
As one of the best if not the best of the new programs ….I am shocked that TNT has not rev-newed this wonderful realistic powerful series….I watch most of TNT’s series because of the great directing acting Great everything …to have this cancelled is horrific. I could count on TNT for good programing…..what could the possible come up with that would match the great acting. Sorry Ray,Andre and Scott….you were so welcome in my world.
I agree with Carol, it was great characters with very good storytelling/drama/humor all mixed into one show. TNT didn’t help things by splitting the season into two halves so far apart either. I sure hope that another network or cable channel is smart enough to pick it up and give it some more time!
