After a disappointing run last summer, FOX has quietly cancelled their Mental TV series.
Mental follows the work of an unorthodox psychiatrist who becomes the Director of Mental Health at a fictional Los Angeles hospital. Created by Dan LeVine and co-executive produced by his sister, Deborah Joy LeVine, the series stars Chris Vance, Annabella Sciorra, Derek Webster, Jacqueline McKenzie, Marisa Ramirez, Nicholas Gonzalez, Warren Kole, and Edwin Hodge.
The series debuted in late May with 5.8 million viewers and a 2.1/5 rating/share in the 18-49 demographic. Those numbers put the series in third place for the timeslot. The numbers fell significantly after that, and episodes sometimes attracted less than half of the viewers as the premiere.
Some of the Mental castmembers have already moved on to other TV projects. Vance has had a recurring role on USA’s Burn Notice.
Webster has been cast in an ABC drama pilot called Edgar Floats. He’ll reportedly be playing the therapist of the main character who’s a former police psychologist turned bounty hunter.
Meanwhile, Kole has been cast in a new CW pilot called Nomads, about four young friends who are backpacking across the world. To earn money, they agree to do secret missions for the CIA and Kole will play their handler.
What do you think? Are you sorry to hear that Mental won’t be back for season two?

very sad
A great show with a great cast that needed a network to grow a backbone long enough for an audience to appreciate the unique chemistry. Not all shows have to include super woman and simple men. I will miss the talent and the story.
I don’t know what is up with Fox…”Mental” was a great show with good story lines and cast–but Fox did not promote it. Another Fox show that is great is “Lie to Me” and they don’t promote it either. I tell friends about “Lie To Me” all the time and am constantly told that they have never heard of it. If I was a show creator I certainly wouldn’t put my show on Fox as they don’t appear to do their part. As it is we will continue to be bombarded with poor quality TV like “Survivor”–. Fox–I hope you… Read more »
Very disappointed to hear this! What, the networks think we don’t watch good TV in the summer!? Mental was an intelligent series with charming smart characters, and a little “out of the box,” which made it only more fabulous. Shame on you, Fox!
SOooooo DISAPPOINTED TO HEAR THIS! COULD HAVE BEEN THE NEXT HOUSE OR E/R…GREAT CASTING, STORYLINES, & A UNIQUENESS ALL ITS’ OWN. THE NETWORKS DID THE SAME THING LAST SUMMER WITH “SWINGTOWN”. AND FOR THESE TWO REASONS, I SEE NO NEED TO EVER WATCH ANOTHER SERIES STARTING OUT IN THE SUMMER. IF THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN RELEASED IN A SEASONAL FALL LINE-UP, IT WOULD HAVE CAUGHT ON. I ALSO REALIZED THAT WHEN THE SHOW WAS RAN ON T.V., THEY PUT IT IN A VERY LATE TIME SLOT, CHANGED NIGHTS HALF WAY THROUGH THE SHORT SEASON, WHICH I LOST TOUCH WITH ‘CAUSE… Read more »
this stinks, i reeeeeally liked the show. i completely related to it. i thought it could of been a huge hit like er, greys anatomy and private practice.
so disappointed.
Bummed!!! I loved this show.
Disappointed… Loved the show…
Loved the show. I wish it had made it, but honestly I am not surpised. Summer dramas almost never make it. It is usually just a time to burn of extra series.
I only just found out about the show loved it, watched the whole session, and now get the sad news that it was canceled all in the same week.
Very disappointed. I really enjoyed the show and was looking forward to a new season. Quality shows like this should be renewed.
O.K. then….I thought that the show was wonderful. I thought that it was an unusual concept and was very well written. I loved the characters and was looking forward to see how their relationships with each other were going to develop. It was a cut above and you should have given it a chance before pulling the plug. I believe it would have caught fire because it was smart and well acted and different. Boo on you for cancelling it and not giving it a chance.
I was looking through my dvr to make room for more shows and checked to see about what happened to mental on the website. I’m very disappointed that it’s been cancelled. I thought that it was very good, unusual and well acted. I looked forward to seeing the relationships developing with the characters. I loved it! What’s the matter with you people? Don’t you know a great show when you see it? You should have given it a chance till it caught on.
I was pretty pissed off, cause this was a good show;there are never good shows about psychiatrists, mental illness, and yet a huge percentage of the nation,is taking antidepressants, and also could wind up in the funny farm(hospital)at one time or another,or have a “depressive reaction.”This was a good show, albeit it was not about the majority of the mentally ill,who cannot afford to go to this hospital.yeah, insurance will not pay for anything.and,it was entertaining!!not a downer.
Really enjoyed the show
