At the start of the season, we wondered which new NBC medical drama had the best chance at survival — Mercy or Trauma. It was hard to decide but now, they’ve both been cancelled anyway.
Mercy follows the lives of three very different nurses at Mercy Hospital in Jersey City. The cast includes Taylor Schilling, Jaime Lee Kirchner, Michelle Trachtenberg, James Tupper, Diego Klattenhoff, Guillermo Diaz, James LeGros, James Van Der Beek, and Delroy Lindo.
The medical drama got off to a pretty poor start last September, attracting a 2.3 rating in the all-important 18-49 demographic and 8.25 million total viewers. Unfortunately, viewership fell even lower from there.
Despite the ratings, NBC ordered a full season of episodes, likely because the network needed the original programming. Though NBC’s Primetime Entertainment President Angela Bromstad said she liked the show creatively, she noted that the show’s ratings had to improve for it to survive.
The ratings didn’t improve. The most recent episode attracted only a 1.1 rating in the demo and 4.01 million viewers.
To no surprise, the Mercy TV show’s now been cancelled. The 22nd and final episode aired last Wednesday, May 12th. Unfortunately, it wasn’t intended to be a series finale and didn’t wrap up the show.
What do you think? Are you sorry to hear that Mercy won’t be back for season two? What would you have liked to have seen happen?

If the network is going to cancel a show then allow them a final episode. This will turn off viewers to start a new series. We live in reality! Who wants to watch on TV what we all experience everyday? The stories of doctors and nurses will always be meshed together but these characters had outside lives with all different twists. Those that were faithful followers were left hanging on main characters being killed or not!
I loved.. this show…. and it ended far too abruptly. It’s a shame – great acting, great story line… characters you could really get attached to. I saw the last episode and could not wait to see what transpires…. too bad that networks would not at least consider keeping it around one more year…
This show is wonderful! I always watched it on Primetime OD so I feel horrible that others might be doing the same, therefor the ratings have gone down. Mercy can not end like that! If NBC insists on cancelling the show, at least tie up the loose ends so they don’t upset the millions of viewers that watch and love this show.
I LOVED Mercy! I have never liked any type of hospital drama before (this includes E.R.), but Mercy had me hooked from the first episode. So in love with the characters and the plot lines. Every actor on the show was great, and the story was so intricate. I’m furious that I will never see Veronica and Chris together, or see if Veronica ends up with her ex after all, or if Chris was hurt in the bombing, or what happens with Veronica’s dad, or any of the other characters’ lives aahhhhghgdhgkjdhgkjdhbko. NBC, you choose Jay over Conan and then… Read more »
i cant believe it! =( mercy was so awesome! it had everything to offer to keep you interested-romance, drama, and humor. i hate that it wasnt really given a chance and left me hanging at the end. i hope maybe they’ll decide to bring it back again in the near future.
how do ye expect to get people interested in a show and get attached to characters when every other week it was off the air with the olympics and holidays etc. this was a really good show!! I suppose its gonna be replaced by some mind numbing, cheaper to make reality show.
Loved mercy! One of the better shows on TV. So sad it is being canceled 🙁 if NBC doesn’t want the show maybe another station could buy it out. Maybe it will do better to be moved elsewhere.
VERY DISAPPOINTING!!!! I really enjoyed watching Mercy and getting to know the characters. It was a different kind of medical drama…not just focusing on medical issues but on the nurses’ lives making it more compelling. Their lives were plausable and their problems, easily identifiable. I don’t understand why networks cannot give a better chance to shows they choose not to promote. I can not begin to list the MANY shows that I’ve gotten interested in only to find they are then canceled. PLEASE reconsider bringing Mercy back. So many people agree, why not listen to the customer. What can you… Read more »
That’s complete bull that this show is canceled. They can’t end it like that!!
HUGE bummer–great show, should NOT have abruptly ended it like that. They should totally wrap it up w/ a final episode that is indeed intended to be a series finale at the least. They owe that us at least!
It really irritates me that you get hooked on a show or shows and then the network decides to pull the rug out from under you! What is up with that? I loved the story line and the actors were great! What is great about looking forward to the fall season is the return of my shows that I have really gotten into. So now, you hooked me and then you let me down by taking it away. Oh and while we are at it, lets replace it with one of those irritating “Reality Shows!” I guess I should start… Read more »
The actresses were very compelling to watch. The show was another medical drama, yes, but it focused on nurses and not doctors which made it different and refreshing. I always had trouble finding it on the schedule even tho’ I had a season pass from my Tivo- I thought it had been cancelled already 2-3 X because of the lack of promotion and weird schedule. Am VERY disappointed that this show was not given more time to build an audience and more promotion to that same end. Once people watched it and got involved it was a “not to be missed”… Read more »
I am VERY angry and upset that Mercy has been cancelled…..Give it a better time slot … like 9 or 10 PM….It was an EXCELLENT show ….. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE bring MERCY BACK!!!!
Mercy should not be cancelled. I really enjoyed the show and I am very angry to hear it is being cancelled.
Enjoyed Mercy. Should not be cancelled. Give it a better viewing time where it does not compete with sports.
