At the start of the season, we wondered which new NBC medical drama had the best chance at survival — Mercy or Trauma. It was hard to decide but now, they’ve both been cancelled anyway.
Mercy follows the lives of three very different nurses at Mercy Hospital in Jersey City. The cast includes Taylor Schilling, Jaime Lee Kirchner, Michelle Trachtenberg, James Tupper, Diego Klattenhoff, Guillermo Diaz, James LeGros, James Van Der Beek, and Delroy Lindo.
The medical drama got off to a pretty poor start last September, attracting a 2.3 rating in the all-important 18-49 demographic and 8.25 million total viewers. Unfortunately, viewership fell even lower from there.
Despite the ratings, NBC ordered a full season of episodes, likely because the network needed the original programming. Though NBC’s Primetime Entertainment President Angela Bromstad said she liked the show creatively, she noted that the show’s ratings had to improve for it to survive.
The ratings didn’t improve. The most recent episode attracted only a 1.1 rating in the demo and 4.01 million viewers.
To no surprise, the Mercy TV show’s now been cancelled. The 22nd and final episode aired last Wednesday, May 12th. Unfortunately, it wasn’t intended to be a series finale and didn’t wrap up the show.
What do you think? Are you sorry to hear that Mercy won’t be back for season two? What would you have liked to have seen happen?

I don’t get how they could give this show 1 season, then cancel it. The veteran cast was awesome and was very talented! I agree with many of the complaintants, I am never watching another show on NBC because if I get into it, they will cancel it! This is unreal! I looked forward to this show every week and had me begging for the next one! Good job, NBC. You are going to replace a decent show with some reality garbage! This explains why television today stinks and why I don’t watch too much of it anymore.
i am SUPER bummed!!! 🙁
By far my favorite show. I was so upset when I found out it has been cancelled. Every episode left me on the corner of my seat just waiting for the next episode to air. I DVR’d religiously every one only to click on the final to see “Season Finale”. So many questions were left unanswered and could be picked up easily from where it left off. I wish Mercy would come back for a Season Two. It just reminds me so much of ER, but BETTER!! Bring back Mercy, and air the show on an actual schedule and not… Read more »
My mom and I are both nurses and loved watching Mercy!!! You can’t leave us hanging like this!!! Please bring it back!
ya i will misss mercy i wish it would stay on plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz dont cancel mercy
I made a mistake by watching “Mercy” as it aired. From now on any show on NBC will not get my attention until it ends. Watching TV series on DVD after the show ends is the only way to go anymore or at least waiting to watch them after the end of a season when you know they are coming back the next year. NBC is just like every other BIG CORPORATION out there because they only care about the bottom line and pleasing the stock holders. They don’t care about the customers/viewers. They don’t care about art or entertainment… Read more »
I just finally watched the final episode on DVR. It was so good! I’m so upset that this show is being canceled. I was really invested in these characters and now we, the faithful audience, are left hanging. Gee, what are they going to replace it with? Another stupid reality show?! And NBC also canceled Law and Order! As an avid drama watcher, I am really disgusted with you, NBC!!!
My Daughter and I are so so Pis#*# OFF! So not fair to end the show like that. We really need to know what happens to everyone. Can not believe they did this to viewers. It’s just not right!!! I think I’m going to cry! Bring Mercy back PLEASE!!! So we can go on living!
How can Trauma have had better ratings when I only watched 1 show that they ran twice.
I’m so mad that they decided to cancel Mercy. It was such a great show. Then they leave us hanging with the season finale. Hopefully when the dvd series comes out, many people will purchase it and it will help the ratings. Then maybe they will decide to bring the show back. The ratings were so crappy probably due to the time. Then they change the season finale to 9pm so that screwed some people from watching. They need to change the time and give it another chance. Same goes for Trauma!
I agree! It’s getting to the point that I’m afraid to get into a new show because next thing I know it’s cancelled. How is it that all these boring overdone reality shows keep surviving but shows with actual plots, interesting characters, and good acting keep getting cancelled?
That’s simple, reality shows are MUCH cheaper to produce and they are very popular. My question is how do any dramas ever get made when they are so expensive to produce. Let’s face it, if a show is successful the actors are going to demand huge raises when their contract is up. Hollywood is just big business now and there is less and less room for big egos. We can’t forget this is all about making a bunch of egotistical creeps become rich. From now on I will wait for a show to go on DVD before I watch it.… Read more »
Bring back Mercy! I’m a nursing student and I loved this show!!!!
This was a great show! Good characters and great story lines. There are just so many shows on these days that nobody can keep track. Also, with everyone using Tivo and DVR, people miss ads for current/upcoming shows. They should at least give us fans a good finale show! Bummer.
Please they can’t leave it like this. We atleast need an ending.
Bring back Mercy!
Im pissed!! I loved this show! It was a great show with great potential! Who ever makes these decisions should be fired!
