Last May, CBS announced a bold move, to take their hit The Big Bang Theory off of the Monday night schedule and shift it to Thursdays, to take on NBC’s traditional night of comedy. In its place, the programmers put another show co-created by Chuck Lorre, the creator of Two and a Half Men. On paper, it sounds like a brilliant move. Now that the Mike & Molly’s premiered, how do things look?
Mike & Molly follows Officer Mike Biggs (Billy Gardell) and Molly Flynn (Melissa McCarthy), a fourth grade teacher. They meet at an Overeaters Anonymous meeting and soon fall for one another. Others in the cast are Reno Wilson, Nyambi Nyambi, Katy Mixon, and Swoosie Kurtz.
The new sitcom debuted to a 3.9 rating in the prized 18-49 demographic and 12.2 million total viewers. That was enough to tie with NBC’s The Event for second place in the demo and have the second most number of viewers.

Historically, the CBS sitcoms who get the post-Two and a Half Men timeslot have done very well. CBS has high expectations however and has ended up cancelling several sitcoms that performed okay on this night. While the sitcom has good initial numbers, it’s not a positive sign that Mike & Molly lost 20% of the lead-in’s demo audience. Last year, Big Bang Theory was building on the lead-in and frequently outperformed Men in the demo.
There was a loss of about 7% of the audience midway through the Mike & Molly first episode so its seems likely those people won’t be back next week. It remains to be seen how many people will. This is a show whose fate will likely be decided over the next several weeks. Right now, things could go either way. Some critics and viewers have wondered how long it will be before the show runs out of material.
What do you think? Is Mike & Molly worth watching? Did you find the fat jokes offensive? Would you cancel or keep it?

I watched Mike & Molly last night and laughed my hiney off. It was so funny, I had to keep rewinding the show due laughing so much and then missing what was said. The funniest part of the whole show was when Molly pulled the nose hair out of
Mike. Hahaha I will continue to watch this show.
This show with out a doubt needs to stay. It is so refreshing not to have yet another reality series. This show makes me LOL, all the characters, the writers are awesome. I have always been a fan of Swoozie Kurz.
I agree with Julie, we are in for alot more laugh’s . Every family has a ….sheep.. and the sister has her place also . Pot smoking and all. No way is this offensive , we are all different sizes and if someone does find this offensive , change the channel. NBC,Thank you and thank you.
Don’t you dare cancel Mike & Molly! This show is breath of fresh air; so genuine are the characters (really human) and the humor is wisdom turned inside out. It must stay to show how wholesome relationships CAN thrive and mutual love and respect is still alive and well in America. Imagine. the institution of marriage isn’t an old-fashioned idea after all. And people who AREN’T built like Angelina and Brad can actually be sexy, funny, tender and are still able to cope with a paranoid mother-in-law and a mom who knocks off a bottle of wine every night. i enjoyed mike and molly..i would like to see how the show develops.
The show wasn’t bad. The sister is really hot. I wish they had created a character more interesting for the sister than a strangely sober sounding stoner. It kind of seems that they are creating a supporting cast, except for Mike’s partner, with the sole purpose of creating situations where there will be lots of food around to tempt the main characters.
I loved Mike & Molly!!!!! I was laughing out loud at some parts. I think each character is strong enough so that each can off go off in many story directions with one show, much like Seinfeld, or Cheers. The Mike & Molly characters are sweet and likable, and I loved the sister and Mike’s partner. I think we are in for a lot more laughs!
I agree GET RID OF THE SISTER! the mom not the best fit either. the rest of the charters great! it is going to have to walk a very straight line though to the fact that it does not offend TOO many people. but you have to learn to laugh at yourself or you will never make it! personally i ish they would get rid of rules of engament and bring back accidentally on purpose.
I wasn’t offended by the fat jokes, but they relied on them for nearly every laugh. THAT to me is a one-trick pony. The writers won’t be able to avoid the elephant in the room (pun intended) in each and every scene. If they don’t relegate the fat joke to once a show, this thing is going to be dead.
a swifty cancellation is in order. Not only is this show dumb, but it is relying on fat jokes to keep afloat. It is also making the obese of America feel ashamed of themselves. So it is in my pile of cancellations.
I cannot agree with you more. This show is so STUPID. My wife’s nephew is heavy-set and when he heard some of those fat jokes, he started crying. Cancel It! Bring back The Big Bang Theory to Mondays
Keep it. It was funny. Not quite as good as Two and a half men but still funny. Sure as hell better than the big bang theory. I honestly have no idea why so many people are watching that really. The fat jokes I don’t were too offensive, but then again I’m not fat. I think it’s definetly gonna be renewed honestly. I see this show has potential. So keep it.
We love the 2 main charachters, have seen them in other shows BOTH very likeable! The partner is great too, Hoped to maybe see John Goodman as Mike’s DAD! Jean Smart would have been a better mother. KEEP the show!
I second (third? Fourth?) the anti-sister brigade. Not a big addition to the story and it detracts from the show for those of us that care about unnecessary irreverence, which seems to be all the rage anymore.
The leads were both very appealing! I agree with Trina about the sister. Also, much as I adored Swoosie in Pushing Daisies, she is miscast here. And I don’t buy the idea that any mom would be THAT oblivious. I’d have preferred her to be more co-dependent with Molly. A better dynamic.
I thought for a comdey sitcom writing was really funny. Already like the characters. LOVE the mom…sis-not so much…partner-funny…Mike-funny…Molly-likeable/funny. For the love of god keep!
I love Mike and his partner. They had a GREAT dynamic. I feel that the pot smoking sister can go bye-bye. Molly is cute and very likable. And I just love the owner/waiter at the little beastro. He was cool. I think the show should revolve around Mike, Molly, Mike’s partner & the waiter. If you want to have people do guest appearances, that is okay. Swoozie Kurtz has appeared in other shows as a mother and I just don’t buy her as a mother. She seems like an old ***** to me.
I liked the characters of Mike and Molly, they made it a cute show. But, I thought the pot smoking sister was very unnecessary for the show. It wasn’t funny that her sister kept getting high in front of the cops or that she got high at the church. That was stupid. And, I do not like the actress that plays the mom. I have never liked her in any shows she has done. She is irritating. Make it a show about Mike and Molly or change up Molly’s family and get rid of the pot smoking (or however she… Read more »
