Back in May 2008, after Moonlight had been cancelled by CBS, there was some talk of the vampire series moving over to the CW network. The Media Rights Capital (MRC) company had purchased CW’s Sunday night timeslots, to fill with their own content.
Unfortunately, MRC was committed to using their own shows (a move that certainly didn’t work out very well) and Alex O’Loughlin, Sophia Myles, and Jason Dohring had to start looking for other work. Considering that there are still thousands and thousands of loyal Moonlight fans, you have to think that somebody is regretting the decision.
Well, it took almost two years but Moonlight is finally coming to the CW network. Unfortunately, no new episodes are being produced. The CW will pair the 16 existing episodes with reruns of The Vampire Diaries beginning Thursday, June 3rd.
Here’s the official press release.
“MOONLIGHT” TO SHINE ON THE CW
Acclaimed Vampire Series starring Alex O’Loughlin Joins “The Vampire Diaries” On Thursday Nights Beginning June 3May 6, 2010 (Burbank, CA) — Summer just got a lot scarier on The CW. The network will air the acclaimed drama MOONLIGHT on Thursday nights beginning June 3. MOONLIGHT will air from 9:00-10:00 p.m. ET, following encore episodes of the first season of the The CW’s hit drama, THE VAMPIRE DIARIES.
On MOONLIGHT, Mick St. John (Alex O’Loughlin) is a captivating, charming and immortal private investigator from Los Angeles, who defies the traditional blood-sucking norms of his vampire tendencies by using his wit and powerful supernatural abilities to help the living. In a life-altering twist of fate, Mick was “bitten” 60 years ago by his new bride, the seductive Coraline (Shannyn Sossamon). Forever 30 years of age, Mick’s as handsome and charismatic as the day he was “turned,” and he eschews others of his kind who view humans only as a source of nourishment. With only a handful of like-minded confidantes for company, including the eternally young, wealthy and mischievous Josef (Jason Dohring), a hedge fund trader who relishes his uniqueness, Mick fills his infinite days protecting the living. One night years ago, a single act of kindness changed Mick when he saved a young girl’s life, making him want to be a better vampire. Now their paths cross again and Mick develops a distinctive bond with Beth Turner (Sophia Myles), who has grown into a beautiful, ambitious internet investigative reporter. Reconnecting with her unleashes feelings Mick knows he can’t pursue without exposing that part of him that would make him a monster in Beth’s eyes. As Mick lives between two realities, fighting his adversaries among the undead and falling in love, he discovers the mysteries and pleasures that a valuable life has to offer.
Produced By: Silver Pictures Television in association with Warner Bros. Television
Executive Producers: Joel Silver, Chip Johannessen, Ron Koslow, Rod Holcomb and Gerard Bocaccio
Co-Executive Producer: Trevor Munson
Unfortunately, this doesn’t mean that CW or any other network has any plans or interest in resurrecting Moonlight. O’Loughlin is expected to be busy with the new Hawaii Five-0 this fall on CBS (which co-owns the CW network).
What do you think? Will you be tuning in to watch the Moonlight reruns?
I love MOONLIGHT i got hooked when it aired on the CW Thurday june 3rd. After the fisrt episode i fell in love with the show so i went out and bought the series and i’ve been staying up hella late to finish the series. it only took about 3 1/2 days to finish it. the people who played Mick, Beth, and Josef did an amazing job. I love the relationship between Mick and Beth, they are soo cute together. i was really upset that they didnt bring back season 2, i wanted to see what happens between Mick and… Read more »
Loved Moonlight… I actually stoped watching anything cbs related on friday nights to boycott and haven’t ever since they cancelled Moonlight. So happy reruns are back maybe if enough viewers watch the CW will pick it up. This was pre twilight and it was definatley on track. I hope the exec’s put thier heads on straight and get this back…Awsome actors and awsome show. We missed ya Moonlight!
I too bought the DVD, and we watch it along with our other favorite X-Files. X-Files started out unknown, but cult like, then it happened, Fox TV had a Great hit(9 seasons). We always thought Moonlight was the next cult series. The fans are there. You know it. You won’t go wrong. Mick St. John and Beth are equal to Mulder and Scully! “The Truth Is Out There”.
I so agree with all who want Moonlight to return. Just make sure the original cast return.
Hawaii 5O is going to be great, but we all know Alex makes a GREAT vampire…REALLY.
Moonlight was the best Vampire show ever. It is ridiculous that this show is gone while True Blood, Vampires Diaries are being renewed CBS really mistreated the show and the fans. Ghost whisperer , Medium…worst numbers than Moonlight and they were not canceled 2 years ago as Moonlight. As a Moonlight fan I have moved on to another shows, none of them CBS of course. And if CBS thinks for minute that I am going to watch Hawaii 50 just to watch Alex running shirtless around Hawaii they are mistaken. Nina and Les can watch Alex shirtless , looks like… Read more »
There will never be another show like MOONLIGHT. It had a special magic about it – character chemistry (all the characters – not just Mick and Beth), humor, suspense, romance, originality of theme…just too many great things to list here. And its possibilities (like backstory of vampire characters) were limitless. Sure, it wasn’t perfect. It had flaws. But it’s attributes far outshone it’s faults. I’m not a vampire fan…but I’m a MOONLIGHT fan. Every time I watch a re-run, or play my DVD, I fall in love with it again. Like fans have said before, MOONLIGHT was a show you… Read more »
I wish bring back to second season , because it good show they are good actor feel like a good romance to learn each other .. so I like more drama romance it good action of a express of the vampatire between the human it was so passion I wish more CBS to bring back to moonlight more show of what happen .. middle of something…
I just started watching Moonlight last week and I AM GLUED. I have seen other vampire dramas, but Moonlight had that something that made me keep watching. I mean one episode really made it fascinating. I know other shows have vampires trying to be good, but something about Mick is making the show WORTH watching. Yes, I never watched any other episodes. I feel all this just from one hour of it. If and WHEN I watch the whole season, there would be no reason why I wouln’t want more. Its absolutley AMAZING. Each of the characters speak something, and… Read more »
moonlight was an incredible show . it interested many people i believe , because i come from a family of 7 sisters and 1 brother , and we all still watch the reruns . it would be amazing to be surprised with a new series . the parts were perfect , and right now vampires are where the money is at! and honestly i think ” Moonlight is better than , BOTH TWILIGHT movies !! please reconsider makingg a new series
This was and still is one of my favorite programs. I watched it every week when it was on. I was extremely disappointed when it was cancelled and also baffled by it since it was such a popular program. I will be watching the reruns now that they are on and I also purchased the Season 1 DVD. I would be so pleased and excited if the show could be brought back again. All of the cast were excellent. I truly miss this program.
Okay, I Love moonlight too but I couldn´t watch it on the CW at June 3rd because I´m from Austria & so I haven´t the television channel “CW”.
But if they show the rerunning in german in austria, I´ll watch it!!
I LOVE MOONLIGHT.
I love Alex O´Loughlin & the charakter Mick St.John & I love Jason Dohring & his charakter Josef kostan!
They two are so great!
The decision to cancel Moonlight during the fever of interest in vampire series courtesy of Twilight is incomprehensible!!! Moonlight was an intense, passionate, intelligent, interesting, and inspiring show. The characters, actors, dialogue, and plot were unmatched! I will bitterly watch the reruns after Vampire Diaries, of course. But be warned, Moonlight is such a good show that new viewers exposed to the reruns are going to be outraged that it was cancelled. For god’s sakes, screw Hawaii Five O, no one cares about that ridiculous 1970s-80s mindless show! BRING BACK MOONLIGHT NOW!
Yes, absolutely, two years too late.
Funny that Moonlight repeats did better than The Vampire Diaries ones.
I am a Moonlight fan that can not even remember how many letters wrote to CW and CBS so they would bring Moonlight back.
I did not watch the reruns yesterday because I have my DVDs. And I have no plans to watch whatever show CBS put Alex O´in. I asked for Moonlight, not interested in the old people CBS shows.
Too late.
We LOVE Moonlight. On June 3rd, 2010 we watched the marathon on Syfy. IT. WAS. AMAZING. We LOVE Alex O’Loughlin(and his character, Mick St. John). He did an awesome job at being a vampire. We were HOPING that they was going to be a new season. BUT NO!!!! The year that Moonlight aired for the first time, they won the most watched new drama television show on CBS. So some “smart person” please explain to me and my cousin why it was canceled in the first place AND why it’s not coming out with a new season NOW. To all… Read more »
I love MOONLIGHT. The actors were great and the stores got better every week. It is too bad CBS was ahead of the game and took it off when vampire shows were really starting to pop up everywhere. CBS wouldn’t listen to the outcry and I think it hurt them for awhile. Alec O’Loughlin will always be Mick St.John regardless of what show or series he plays in. I wish they would make a movie to answer all the unanswered questions from the MOONLIGHT series. I have the CD and I watch it a lot. I just don’t feel CBS… Read more »
