Back in May 2008, after Moonlight had been cancelled by CBS, there was some talk of the vampire series moving over to the CW network. The Media Rights Capital (MRC) company had purchased CW’s Sunday night timeslots, to fill with their own content.
Unfortunately, MRC was committed to using their own shows (a move that certainly didn’t work out very well) and Alex O’Loughlin, Sophia Myles, and Jason Dohring had to start looking for other work. Considering that there are still thousands and thousands of loyal Moonlight fans, you have to think that somebody is regretting the decision.
Well, it took almost two years but Moonlight is finally coming to the CW network. Unfortunately, no new episodes are being produced. The CW will pair the 16 existing episodes with reruns of The Vampire Diaries beginning Thursday, June 3rd.
Here’s the official press release.
“MOONLIGHT” TO SHINE ON THE CW
Acclaimed Vampire Series starring Alex O’Loughlin Joins “The Vampire Diaries” On Thursday Nights Beginning June 3May 6, 2010 (Burbank, CA) — Summer just got a lot scarier on The CW. The network will air the acclaimed drama MOONLIGHT on Thursday nights beginning June 3. MOONLIGHT will air from 9:00-10:00 p.m. ET, following encore episodes of the first season of the The CW’s hit drama, THE VAMPIRE DIARIES.
On MOONLIGHT, Mick St. John (Alex O’Loughlin) is a captivating, charming and immortal private investigator from Los Angeles, who defies the traditional blood-sucking norms of his vampire tendencies by using his wit and powerful supernatural abilities to help the living. In a life-altering twist of fate, Mick was “bitten” 60 years ago by his new bride, the seductive Coraline (Shannyn Sossamon). Forever 30 years of age, Mick’s as handsome and charismatic as the day he was “turned,” and he eschews others of his kind who view humans only as a source of nourishment. With only a handful of like-minded confidantes for company, including the eternally young, wealthy and mischievous Josef (Jason Dohring), a hedge fund trader who relishes his uniqueness, Mick fills his infinite days protecting the living. One night years ago, a single act of kindness changed Mick when he saved a young girl’s life, making him want to be a better vampire. Now their paths cross again and Mick develops a distinctive bond with Beth Turner (Sophia Myles), who has grown into a beautiful, ambitious internet investigative reporter. Reconnecting with her unleashes feelings Mick knows he can’t pursue without exposing that part of him that would make him a monster in Beth’s eyes. As Mick lives between two realities, fighting his adversaries among the undead and falling in love, he discovers the mysteries and pleasures that a valuable life has to offer.
Produced By: Silver Pictures Television in association with Warner Bros. Television
Executive Producers: Joel Silver, Chip Johannessen, Ron Koslow, Rod Holcomb and Gerard Bocaccio
Co-Executive Producer: Trevor Munson
Unfortunately, this doesn’t mean that CW or any other network has any plans or interest in resurrecting Moonlight. O’Loughlin is expected to be busy with the new Hawaii Five-0 this fall on CBS (which co-owns the CW network).
What do you think? Will you be tuning in to watch the Moonlight reruns?

THANK YOU for your service to our great country. God bless you and God bless America!
I watched Moonlight when it first aired on CBS and fell in love with it. I’ve always loved (what I deem “good”) vampire flicks and when Moonlight came out there wasn’t the vampre craze there is now. It fed my fascination and had all the right ingredients – the mystery solving/detective edge, action, the forbidden romance with the handsome but unlikely vampire”guardian angel” and the beautiful human, (well, now that’s a running theme but Moonlight pulls it off ). In an age of too much hokey vampire crap I hope us Moonlight fans get our share and get a second… Read more »
We would all love a 2nd season but right now that isn’t possible with the original actors. Alex is set to star in Hawaii Five-0 this fall and Sophia is doing a British TV series called Spooks. It has a short season of 9 episodes but it still takes up time. The only shot right now and what I’ve been pushing for at my site is a Moonlight movie. While Moonlight only lasted 1 season, vamp movies are so hott right now and the fanbase for Moonlight is just as strong as it was 2 years ago there is a… Read more »
I agree it would not be Moonlight without Alex and Sophia playing the lead. I would want the same story line too. That is why I am boycotting Hawaii 5-0. I will not watch. I want it to fail so Alex needs a new job again. Every lame show CBS puts him in fails and this one will too. He’s great but he is no Jack Lord. Remakes are just a bad idea, IMO. The original Hawaii 5-0 was a great show and I loved it (I’m old enough to remember it) and am not interested in a tweaked version.… Read more »
I watched Moonlight when it first aired on CBS and fell in love with it! I have always loved (what I deem “good”) vampire flicks and when Moonlight came out there wasn’t the vampire craze that is so apparent now. It fed my fascination back then and I am so happy to have it return to TV and would love to see another season. The show has all the right ingredients and they did it before the vampire shows beacame way overdone. Hope we “Moonlighters” get another season and with the original cast; It’s the only way it would work.
Does anyone if I can buy a DVD of the first season in stores (what store) or is it only available online?
Hi Joon,
You can Moonlight through Amazon.com or the WB site and many other places. Here’s the link for the WB site. It has a cool flash of Mick…

I had pre ordered mine on Amazon.com but I have also seen it at Wal-Marts.
I own the DVD of the one and only season… bought it at DeepDiscount.com.
PLEASE give us a season 2!!!!
if i had the money i would pay for it to be brougt back and for the production of new episodes
When it started re-running on the CW I thought it was a new show. Just found out it wasn’t and watched every episode.
I hate vampire shows. HATE Twilight with a passion. But I love Moonlight. Not sure why. I hope there are enough other people like me out there – new viewers that may help the CW reconsider starting the show back up once Hawaii-FiveO fails, which it inevitably will.
I think Moonlight should continue and the spot is perfect on Thursday nights following the Vampire Diaries. CW you made a mistake taking this show off!
I also want to commend the site owner for the great articles on Moonlight. And I hope many of you have a Nielsen box and have Moonlight tuned in every week. The ratings have been about the same as The Vampire Diaries repeats. This gives the WB a chance to see that the show is still popular. Not a good chance for a season 2 with 2 of the lead actor’s in other tv series but there is a chance for a movie with vamp movies being so hott right now… Eclipse just eclipsed the box office again! 😉
I’ve been reading your comments. I hear this same thing over and over again. Many did not hear about Moonlight while it was airing on CBS. And its such a shame because Moonlight is still immensely popular even after all this time. I run a Moonlight website and I hear from people all the time that missed it on CBS. We are all glad the CW is airing the repeats. You can watch Moonlight on youtube if you’ve missed any episodes but that is tedious. Best to buy it on iTunes or DVD… ~Enjoy
This is by far the best show I have seen in a long time- I don’t know how I missed it before. I wish they’d bring it back with the original cast. The vampire theme is alot more popular now and the show would bring major ratings!!
I just started watcing this show! I tell you the channel did not do enough advertisement, because I love it so much I was looking for it on Nexflix to catch up and I find in my search the horror of te show being cancelled on the first season WTF?????*&^&%^%$%#%…… man that leaves a bad taste in my mouth! I can only hope the channel gets thier act together and puts this show back on next to the Vampire Diaries slot if they know what’s good for them…meaning ($$$$$$$$$) but hey they may not be that smart after all some… Read more »
Hi Evette,
CBS canceled it right before Twilight hit the big screen. You don’t even want to know what happened because it was more behind the scenes ‘drama’ than what you see on the screen as Alex O’Loughlin said once. Fans were in an uproar to say the least and so many called in the day it was canceled that we shut down CBS’s switchboard in New York.
please make a season two of moonlight. I just stumbled onto the series from the CW and truly enjoy them.
I first watched Moonlight online after my sister introduced it to me and I’ve been watching it on CW since they started airing it. I would really love it if they revived Moonlight with new episodes, but only with the original cast.
I will definitely watch Moonlight.
I was enthralled by the story when I first found the show and so disappointed with the decision that was made to cancel it. I don’t get much time to watch TV so I only watch the best shows on, and Moonlight was definitely the best.
I hope that in the future there will be a creative TV team that will bring Moonlight back. It would be most welcome.
I loved, loved, loved, loved and loved….Moonlight and was completed devastated by the way they show just abruptly ended. There was no farewell. It was just done. I was somewhat consoled when I heard about Three Rivers but CBS was heartless once again and took that away too. Nevertheless, I am THRILLED to see Moonlight again on the CW, where I think it has a much better chance of survival. If by some miracle, the network decides to bring it back, I pray, pray that they do so only if they are able to get the original cast. If not,… Read more »
