Tonight, TBS kicks off the fourth season of the My Boys sitcom. Will it be back for a fifth season? Some of the actors expect it be cancelled but TBS doesn’t agree — not yet anyway.
My Boys revolves around sportswriter Penelope Jane “PJ” Franklin (Jordana Spiro) who has several close friends that are mostly guys. They include her brother Andy (Jim Gaffigan), competing sportswriter Bobby (Kyle Howard), DJ Brendan Dorff (Reid Scott), commitment-challenged Mike (Jamie Kaler), socially inept Kenny (Michael Bunin), and Stephanie Layne (Kellee Stewart), a fellow female writer.
The show began in November 2006. It was successful enough to be renewed for seasons two, three, and four but TBS only ordered nine installments each time. Anticipating a cancellation this time around, several in the cast have found other work, or at least they’ve tried to.
Co-star Jim Gaffigan has already left the show and won’t be in the nine episodes of season four. He’s reportedly spending more time on his stand-up career. Tonight’s season opener explains that Andy’s job has sent him to China and PJ has a hard time replacing him in the weekly poker game.

After filming season four, both Spiro and Howard signed on for new NBC series. Spiro secured a role in Love Bites and Howard landed one of the lead roles in Perfect Couples. Unfortunately, both had to later bow out. Though it seems very likely that My Boys is finished, TBS is unwilling to say that yet and is holding the actors to their contracts.
As a result, NBC felt they had to replace Spiro and Howard in their projects. If, as expected, TBS does cancel My Boys, they’ll have lost two jobs.
Scott is a little luckier. He was hired for a recurring role on a new dark comedy series for Showtime, The Big C. Scott is still under contract to My Boys but, because of The Big C’s production schedule and his role is a recurring one, he’ll be available in the unlikely event TBS wants season five of My Boys.

Other than Modern Family, this is the best comedy on TV today. I wish they would renew it for another season and for more than 9 episodes. What happened to 22 episodes per season? I also think it should have been nominated for an emmy.
I like the show and would be sad to see if go but more than anything I think that TBS needs to make a firm decisions so that the actors can make decisions about their careers. Right now they have them stuck which sucks.
I liked season 1-3 but season 4 has been pretty much unwatchable. The writing and plot, everything has just been terrible. I hope they cancel the show.
Love this show! I hope they keep it going but don’t wait over a year again like they did with season 4. That’s how shows fail. I’ve seen so many great shows that the networks cancel without even giving them a chance to build a following.
Please renew this show for a Season Five–and the more episodes, the better. My Boys proved you can break the Moonlighting curse and still have great shows after the romance is consummated. See? Their lives still go on and we’ve got lots of great subjects.

I would hate to see TBS give up on original broadcasting, it doesn’t need to be the retread channel. My Boys is proof that they can create an original show that is superior to the broadcast networks. -Just look at what USA has done in no time at all.
I love this show! I look forward to it every year when it comes back. The fact that you have such a loyal following with only 9 episode seasons that are aired once each year really says something about this show. Please consider renewing it for a season 5!
I have never seen this show – simply because it airs on TBS. I refuse to watch TBS based soley on the fact that they are in love with the least talented man in show business: Tyler Perry. If this show had run on sister station, TNT, I definitely would have taken a look.
Someone has to stop Tyler Perry from dumbing down entertainment to the lowest common denominator and if boycotting a show like this is what it takes, so be it. Sorry fans.

I just discovered this show and it’s great!!! This group of friends are just like me and my friends. Into sports, music, poker, and are just regular people. It’s really refreshing to see a realistic show on TV. If TBS cancels this show I would be really mad. This is the only original show that TBS has that is any good.

Please don’t cancel, I love this show. I got the DVDs and I watch them all the time. The writing is superb and the actors are perfect in their roles. This show makes me laugh out loud, they remind me of my guy friends.
