After struggling for years in the ratings, it seems that NBC is really starting to turn things around. Of course, they still have their challenges. Which NBC TV shows will be cancelled and which will be renewed? Stay tuned!
NBC shows this season (so far): A to Z, About a Boy, AD: The Bible Continues: Allegiance, America’s Got Talent, American Ninja Warrior, American Odyssey, Aquarius, Bad Judge, The Biggest Loser, The Blacklist, The Celebrity Apprentice, Chicago Fire, Chicago PD, Constantine, Dateline, Dateline Saturday Night Mystery, Grimm, Hannibal, Hollywood Game Night, I Can Do That, The Island, Last Comic Standing, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Marry Me, Mr. Robinson, The Mysteries of Laura, The Night Shift, One Big Happy, Parenthood, Parks and Recreation, Running Wild with Bear Grylls, The Sing-Off, The Slap, State of Affairs, Undateable, The Voice, and Welcome to Sweden.
There’s lots of data that NBC looks at when deciding whether to renew or cancel a TV series but the ratings are typically the biggest piece. Here’s how the network’s shows are doing.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated charts, please try reloading the page. You can also see them here and here.
A couple of notes about these charts:
These figures are updated automatically as new ratings are released. The averages are based on the final national numbers (live plus same day viewing), unless marked with an asterisk (*). For technical reasons, I have to resort them manually so feel free to let me know if I missed something.
Keep in mind that the demo numbers are typically what’s most important to advertisers. Therefore, that’s how the networks measure success. Advertisers pay more for ad time on a show that has a higher demo rating. Because older viewers don’t count? No, it’s because younger viewers watch less traditional TV and are harder to reach.
Demo numbers are typically reported using the 10ths decimal place (2.4, for example). In the averages, I’m using an extra decimal for easier ranking. The networks take into account when shows air on Fridays and Saturdays, nights when TV viewership is lower.
What do you think? Which shows are you rooting for? Which one isn’t as big a hit as you thought? Are you hoping any series will get cancelled to make way for something else?
MYSTERIES OF LAURA is just heating up and getting buzz – a late bloomer. Don’t
cancel! A detective juggling w/a family a great angle. Show is very watchable
compared to others.
#SaveConstantine! One of the best shows of this year!
Why cancel Allegiance it was a great show, also State of Affairs needs to be renewed both were some of the best shows you have. I’m over 49 so don’t I count?
Dear NBC Television Network Please Cancel The Law And Order Sequels Because Those Are Almost Looking Like The NCIS Programs I Have A Perfect Idea Coming For A Law And Order Series Finale Episode That’s Showing Fans How The NCIS Cast Could Go To New York To Help The Law And Order Staff Go After Criminals. Wait A Minute CBS Already Has Sequels Like That Being Titled As NCIS Los Angeles, & NCIS New Orleans! I Don’t Like How NBC Is Promoting Disrespectful Attitudes Through Their Programming The Same Thing For CBS Crappy Broadcasting System
Well, one of the first things I’m seeing is someone clamoring for some gods-awful reality show. “Nothing like it on the air”…? Please…there are more awful reality shows on the air than there are actual decent, original tv shows. What they need to renew is Constantine. The acting is phenomenal. The scripts are amazing. Yet I see people clamoring for another stupid “reality” show. These people wouldn’t understand art and originality if Michaelangelo’s David pimp-slapped them right in the face with the Mona Lisa
State of Affairs is unbelievable in its writing and its acting. This simply must be renewed! On the cultural side, I love The Sing Off. There is nothing like it on television. No other competition offers groups of singers television exposure and a chance to change their lives through their musical performances like The Sing Off. Renew This!
I can’t believe they plan to cancel Allegiance!!! This is, by far, one of the best shows I’ve seen in a long time. Everything about this production is great. I don’t think NBC gave it a fair chance to catch on. They cancelled the show after only three episodes and then, made the viewers struggle to see the remaining episodes. Yes, and not only that, they cut it just when things were really getting exciting! Are they trying to drive the viewers mad?!!!!! Have a heart, NBC, and give this thriller a chance! Get rid of “The Slap.” It’s stupid,… Read more »
how can we let NBC know that they need to keep State of Affairs? I started watching On Demand–so, I am not even counted! But, ITS TERRIFIC! Do not cancel!
I don’t get it!? If State of Affairs stands to be cancelled because of ratings, then why does Grimm keep getting renewed? It’s ratings are lower than SOA!! Something smells here!!!
Also, the 18-49 viewers are NOT the only ones that matter! I’m 75 and my $$ spends the same as the younger viewers – stop discounting us! We also exist!!!
Grimm is a FRIDAY show. They have a lower threshold for ratings since it is a Friday show and it is a niche show. Compared to other non-Friday shows of a similar nature, State of Affairs is doing amazingly bad. And that is why it stands to be cancelled.
I’m mad they already canceled “Allegiance” after 3 episodes! We really liked this show & thought it had really good potential. This is the reason I usually don’t watch the new shows until the renewal. It REALLY ticks me off to get involved in a show & have the network just yank it without even considering the viewers who do like it. How can you know after 3-4 episodes whether a show will catch on. They cannot all be #1 hits & some good shows do take a little time to get a following. They would do better to air… Read more »
Love State of Affairs….Please do not cancel this show –
Hey Girls don’t get your hopes up too high as NBC seems to love to always cancel any TV show the viewers like as do the Mickey Mouse ABC TV Network, and CBS aka Crappy Broadcast System and so the only shows I even bother to watch are Blue Bloods, on CBS and Chicago Fire and Chicago PD and the News…Still say they blew it when they killed Killer Women an it won’t surprise me to see The Mysteries of Laura, Night Shift, and Madam Secretary all also get the axe since these greedy TV Network Big Wigs are totally… Read more »
Ralph,
I agree, the networks are quick to cancel shows. The Crappy Broadcast System? Can I borrow that one. It is so fitting. Ten years ago they canceled Joan of Arcadia, a show that I loved and I still hate them for it. Then last year they went and canceled The Amazing Ones. Now I’m watching more cable shows even though they have shorter seasons. It is less of a risk to get hooked and then have the rug pulled out from underneath you.
Les Mooves, go to hell!
I really like State of Affairs. I have heard though that it may be cancelled. I sure hope it isn’t. I usually watch another network, but I am starting to watch more programs on NBC. So please don’t cancel State. Please give it another season…
State of affairs is amazing! Also Allegiance and Constantine need to come back. Three of the best shows I have seen in years! The later two were in bad time slots, and Constantine has that campy vibe to it that takes a little longer to catch on. As soon as I started hearing about more people taking an interest it was gone. I also thought parks and rec was the biggest load of crud on tv, and according to the charts it had some of the lowest ratings, so how did it stay on for years while good shows have… Read more »
I love the state of affairs!!! Sadly most of us do not have nelson boxes so we are not counted as viewers and they also target specific age groups for ratings. What about the rest of us viewers? I guess we just don’t matter. As usual the very few that i actually look forward to watching are the ones that usually canceled. I hope for the best but there are always other forms of entertainment than tv. I don’t watch much tv any more due to the constant let downs. You find a show you love only to have it… Read more »
You are absolutely right!… I also do not usually watch TV but this time became addicted to State of Affairs, Constantine and Allegiance (which was suddenly pull out) … It is very frustrating to basically commit to a TV show and then the network comes at any moment and takes it away from you without giving you closure…argh!!
