Season 19 of NCIS is coming to CBS in the fall but there are some big changes ahead. The long-running series will be airing on a new night and it looks like there will be fewer appearances by star Mark Harmon.
Harmon will only appear in a small number of episodes in ‘the low single digits,’ per TV Line. The series is looking to pick up someone to fill in the void by the lack of Harmon and Gary Cole is a possibility. The most recent season seemed to set up a reduced role for Harmon. His Gibbs character had been suspended by NCIS indefinitely and his boat was blown up with him on it (though you could see Gibbs swim away).
As for the time slot change, NCIS has aired on CBS for its previous 18 seasons. The series will now air on Monday nights. Kelly Kahl, CBS Entertainment president, said the following about the night change, per The Hollywood Reporter:
“I look at it as a forward-looking move. Putting franchises together as we’re doing with FBI is certainly one way people enjoy watching TV these days, especially linear TV. It works, and it’s not new to us because we’ve used our franchises to launch other franchises over the years. So this move of NCIS to Monday lets us take a night that was doing OK but now kind of supercharge it. Dropping the number one scripted show on TV in the middle of a Monday night makes it an extremely strong night, and it gives us a chance to launch another piece of the franchise in NCIS: Hawai’i.”
The new NCIS: Hawai’i series just started production on its first season last week. CBS will announce premiere dates for NCIS and more at a later date.
What do you think? Are you excited to check out a mostly Harmon-less season 19 of NCIS on CBS?
It won’t be the same without Mark Harmon every night.
This year’s NCIS is not the same, wish last year’s cast was on including Mark Harmon. This was one of my most favorite programs, it had suspense, love, laughs and a caring about a good life.
The show has been weak without him. I might give it up. Really disappointed
Without Mark Harmon, there is no NCIS. Just like without Anna Farris, there is no more Mom. You can’t remove the central character and expect the show to survive.
I don’t like this at all! He’s the reason I watch it.
Bad move. Gibbs IS NCIS. They’ve lost me as a viewer.
Nope, it will never make it without him- a waste of a season!!
Having Mark Harmon in fewer episodes will be the slow death of NCIS. With key figures leaving the show is not the same. Will enjoy the re runs. Understand Harmon wanting to slow down but just not the same
I will miss Gibbs. He holds the team together. Will watch as always.
Will miss Mark/ Gibbs, but I do like Gary Cole. He’d be good to keep the series going.
I was wondering what was happening to Mark Harmon one of the best shows on air regular tv. Look forward every week agreed with you all need retired getting end of the series tired of this topic for last 18 years now.
No, love Gibb’s character. NCIS will definitely not be the same without Gibbs in the episodes.
Almost stopped watching when Abby left, not sure it’s worth watching without Gibbs too. And also losing Ellie sucks, My opinion, the choices they made replacing Abby and Tony were awful.
This is such old news. We already knew this as h ewas going to leave, but CBS said they would cancel the series. So in negotiations they came up with him appearing in a select number of episodes.
I wish that CBS would have kept NCIS on Tuesday nights and moved NCIS LA to Tuesday! I still think it is a mistake and insult to move the show from its normal Tuesday Night to Monday! Maybe TPTB should move Scott Bakula to NCIS since the ridiculous decision to cancel NEW ORLEANS which seemed to have the best team lately! Bad decisions all around IMO
Thank you for posting that. you seem to be the only one who understands. People dont seem to get he was going to leave but did not so lots of people would not lose their jobs.
Gibbs is my favorite and will be missed if in fewer episodes!
