Season 19 of NCIS is coming to CBS in the fall but there are some big changes ahead. The long-running series will be airing on a new night and it looks like there will be fewer appearances by star Mark Harmon.
Harmon will only appear in a small number of episodes in ‘the low single digits,’ per TV Line. The series is looking to pick up someone to fill in the void by the lack of Harmon and Gary Cole is a possibility. The most recent season seemed to set up a reduced role for Harmon. His Gibbs character had been suspended by NCIS indefinitely and his boat was blown up with him on it (though you could see Gibbs swim away).
As for the time slot change, NCIS has aired on CBS for its previous 18 seasons. The series will now air on Monday nights. Kelly Kahl, CBS Entertainment president, said the following about the night change, per The Hollywood Reporter:
“I look at it as a forward-looking move. Putting franchises together as we’re doing with FBI is certainly one way people enjoy watching TV these days, especially linear TV. It works, and it’s not new to us because we’ve used our franchises to launch other franchises over the years. So this move of NCIS to Monday lets us take a night that was doing OK but now kind of supercharge it. Dropping the number one scripted show on TV in the middle of a Monday night makes it an extremely strong night, and it gives us a chance to launch another piece of the franchise in NCIS: Hawai’i.”
The new NCIS: Hawai’i series just started production on its first season last week. CBS will announce premiere dates for NCIS and more at a later date.
What do you think? Are you excited to check out a mostly Harmon-less season 19 of NCIS on CBS?
Hate new night and hate not having enough Mark Harmon! Executive is wrong. She’s putting NCIS against either Bachelor franchise or Dancing with the Stars. Bad idea. The show won’t last without Gibbs. CBS is killing this show. Give it a dignified death. Gary Cole cannot carry this show.
I do not like Gary Cole at all! If he joins the cast it will be terrible! I am a true NSIS fan and please don’t ruin it by adding Gary Cole!
I wish they would just let NCIS die with dignity so fans who have followed for nearly two decades could mourn and move on. There simply isn’t enough talent to carry the show any now. Gibbs, Ducky, and Abby were the backbone of the series. Their characters were intelligent, dynamic, and added a nearly supernatural flare to the mundane with their amazing intuition. They shared incredible chemistry. But the writers began chipping away at the foundation of those characters (around season 13) by changing their backstories, as if those of us who have followed the series from its inception wouldn’t… Read more »
The only thing that could possibly save them is to bring back Ziva and Abby. THAT would hold my interest!!
I don’t think the series will be the same.
All of you blaming CBS need to read a little more carefully. The show was going to be canceled because Harmon wanted to leave. But when he found out about the cancelation, he negotiated to keep it on the air, by being in a select number of episodes. You don’t have to continue watching. Or think of it as a new show, you’ll give a chance. It’s not the first time some characters went to a different show…ie Munch(Homicide to SVU). So think of it as McGee/Torres/Kasie/etc moving to a new show.
Problem is none of them are the reason most people watch NCIS. I am not saying they are bad characters (well TBH, Kasie is annoying), but Harmon was the biggest and last remaining star on the show that a majority of the audience watched it for.
They should have cancelled it if he is done. Nothing wrong with that, 18 years is a hell of a run. Now you going to have a dead show walking.
This is crazy! TPTB don’t have a clue how to run a network. They want to move NCIS to Monday night to clump the FBI series together. They never cared about NCIS LA when they moved it to Sunday with constant late starts & pre-emptions. Move FBI to Sunday and move NCIS LA back to Tuesday where it belongs.
This will be “another” program we will stop watching. What is happening to the TV programming problem? Someone is just not thinking things through.
This will be the end of NCIS! There is no replacement for Mark Harmon. I don’t see a Season 20 in the future, not one that I will watch anyway.
Why in the world would you do something so incredibly STUPID???????????? This show keeps going downhill every year. I will not be watching any of the NCIS shows anymore.
Stupid? really. It was his decision. he came back so lots of people did not lose their jobs.
Being a person close to Harmon’s age, I can understand want to call it a day and do things that you never had the time to do. It’s normal to be upset because because we’ve become so accustomed to seeing them…like a family member. We relied on them to be there and entertain us as they have for so long. We s/b thankful he is willing to return on occasion…like Ducky, who I’ve adored since The Man from Uncle (dating myself!)
Gary Cole cannot take Gibbs’ place. Also why was Emily Wickersham cut? I wasn’t too satisfied with the season finale.
I think you people that write these shows are dumb, crazy. Without Gibbs on the show I think it will end very soon. I don’t think you need to find someone to take Gibbs’ place. I think you need to use Agent McGee in Gibbs place.
I think this will kill NCIS like ABC killed the Connors. NCIS Hawaii looks like CSI: Cyber. It will start strong, then drop dramatically.
Mark Harmon is the reason why I watch NCIS, so I will not be a dedicated viewer unless he is in an episode.
I guess I’ll watch it but it won’t be the same. Still don’t like the fact that CBS canceled NCIS-NO. Also the fact of putting SEAL Team on the streaming service that we have to pay for on top of paying for cable tv.
