At the recent upfronts, it was announced that CBS was cancelling The New Adventures of Old Christine after five years on the air.
Starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus, the sitcom has been in danger of being cancelled each year and, on a few occasions, ABC expressed interest in taking it over. Though it’s looking doubtful that the alphabet network will indeed save it, discussions are still ongoing.
Kari Lizer, Old Chrisine’s creator, says that the cancellation didn’t surprise her, especially considering the fact that the show was taken out of the Monday night block of sitcoms and has been put on hiatus many times during its run.
She recently told TV Guide, “As far as what happened at CBS, we’ve suffered from a serious lack of support from them since the beginning… I hate to say it, but I’m afraid they don’t care much for the female-of-a-certain-age point of view over there. How else do you explain them squandering the talents of Julia [Louis-Dreyfus] and Wanda [Sykes]?”
The cancellation news came at a particularly bad time for Sykes. Her Saturday night talk series, The Wanda Sykes Show, was also cancelled by FOX. Lizer expects Sykes to bounce back though, noting, “She’s never funnier than when she’s pissed off.”
What do you think? Is CBS’ treatment of Old Christine some kind of sexism or just due to poor ratings?

I too just learned that The New Adventures of Old Christine has been canceled. What a stupid and disappointing decision CBS has made! It was a smart and funny show, with a very talented cast, great writing. Boo to you, CBS!!!!
I am tremendously sad that this show has been cancelled! It was my favorite show on TV! I hope that another network is smart enough to pick it up!
I just started watching the re-runs on Lifetime and WGN just a couple days ago and I am already hooked!!! This is my new favorite show! I was laughing so loud this evening I was afraid my mother wouldn’t be able to get to sleep – and we weren’t even in the same room!
New Adventures of Old Christine is my favorite laugh out really loud show and i was sick at heart when i learned it was cancelled. It was (is) the funniest show on TV. What a hugh mistake!!!!!!
CBS sure doesn’t have much to offer, and it’s obvious that somebody there doesn’t know what the public wants to see. I agree that I wasn’t really aware of when “Old Christine” was on – it wasn’t advertised much – then I found it on Lifetime and haven’t laughed so hard for a long time. IT’S a RIOT!!! CBS should learn how to hold onto the shows that can bring them good ratings.
Cancelling shows like this are EXACTLY why people don’t watch network television anymore. CBS, YOU just added one more person to the cable watcher list. I’m soooo sick of network execs making ridiculous decisions like this one. Keep it up and CBS will be cancelled.
I am a thirty five year old male, and I cant believe they cancelled it. The show was very funny.
This was one of the best/funniest shows on TV. I was trying to find out what happened to it and just read it was cancelled. BAD decision on the part of CBS. Everyone on the show was hysterical and the interaction was great. I’ll be watching the reruns on channel 11.
If indeed there were poor ratings, it is due to the lack of support for a show written and carried by women and about women / single moms. How freakin’ archaic/ignorant can you get?
This is a superbly written show – the cancellation is poor judgement on the execs part. This was the only show I watched on TV… I will miss it.
I watched it every Monday I was so sad to see it go.. I have been watching Reruns… BOO CBS you always cancel the good shows and leave the lame ones on.
I can’t believe you cancelled “Old Christine/New Christine”. It’s the best comedy on TV. I’m watching every re-run I can find!!! Please bring it back!!
I think that Chuck Lorre has more sway over CBS than is good for the network. Hi newest show, Mike and Mollu, is mediocre, and does not have near the humor that Old Christine had. I watch every re-run of Old Christine as much as I can …. it is priceless, and the writing and the acting is superb. Also, Rules of Engagement, though it has its charm, is also not worth the loss of Old Christine. David Spade’s character is absolutely sickening ….. and the nyhumor of that show is peurile at best. But I guess that’s what the… Read more »
The sitcom was funny but the today s tv is horrible.
The New Adventures of Old Christine is laugh-out-loud funny. I looked forward to this Emmy Award-winning show every week. I just now learned that it’s been cancelled because I’ve been waiting for it to begin its new season and … well, … WTF is wrong with the minds at CBS.
Dear ABC,
This is your chance to up CBS again. Please take it!
=)
Sincerely,
The Viewers
I agree with all the posters. Like some of you mentioned, I never heard of the show when it was on CBS! When it was advertised on lifetime it caught my eye and I was hooked. I am addicted to the show and have NEVER laughed so hard. It has helped me through a hard time right now – medical issues – and laughing away your problems is always great, right??
I don’t ever watch cbs…bring it to nbc or abc, ratings would soar I would imagine!
same here!
