In 2009, both Southland and Medium were cancelled by NBC but were then saved by other networks. Three long-running shows were recently cancelled last month and it looked like each had a good shot of being saved as well.
A couple weeks later, Law & Order and Ghost Whisperer have been denied a second chance and now, The New Adventures of Old Christine has as well.
The New Adventures of Old Christine follows a neurotic single mom (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) who has a hard time juggling a relationship with responsibilities at home and work. Others in the cast include Hamish Linklater, Wanda Sykes, Trevor Gagnon, Clark Gregg, Emily Rutherfurd, Tricia O’Kelley, and Alex Kapp Horner.
The sitcom has been a moderate performer for CBS from the beginning and has ended up on the bubble each year. For the past two years, ABC has been ready to pick up the show if CBS dropped it. Those were in the days when ABC wasn’t having much luck finding successful sitcoms of their own.
When CBS cancelled Old Christine this year, the alphabet network wasn’t as interested anymore because ABC already has some successful sitcoms with several new ones waiting in the wings.
This season, Old Christine aired opposite ABC sitcoms and didn’t fare very well. As a result, the network has decided not to pick up the Julia Louis-Dreyfus sitcom for season six.
The final episode of The New Adventures of Old Christine aired on May 12th on CBS. After five seasons and 88 episodes, there won’t be a final episode to wrap up the series.
On the positive side, reruns will begin airing on Lifetime and on local stations across the country in the fall.
What do you think? Should ABC have picked up Old Christine for season six? How would you have ended the show?

Was starting to miss this show so I googled to see if it was cancelled. WahWah…..too bad, it was such a great show! JLD is better in this then she was on Seinfeld! Bring back Christine!
You have got to be kidding, I have been waiting for The Adventures of Old Christine to start up only to find out it has been cancelled. What are they thinking, that show is awesome. Everyone I talk to loves the show, get rid of some of the stuip shows that are on and leave the good ones. They need to rethink this one !!!!!!
Due to recovery from surgery,I discovered this show. I was not usually in front of a tv before at tis time. Thanks to WGN I can now watch 2 episodes a night. I credit the humor with aiding and speeding my recover. This was a GREAT show. Julia i wonderful and even makes Wanda Sykes tolerable!
Also just found out this was canceled. We really enjoyed this show and hope there is still a chance it can be picked up by another network.
Why do they cancel the good ones and keep the crap! Problem is they never properly promoted the show from the beginning. I have truly only discovered the shownin reruns, thank goodness for these. The show was brilliant, the writing was fantastic and it makes you laugh. We need to laugh not be desensitized by all the crime shows and mind-numbed by all the reality crap.
Julia is fabulous and the cast is nothing short of a compliment to her talent. Please reconsider.
Can’t believe Old Christine was cancelled! I like others, searched for it on web, hoping it was a late season starter. What a rip! Bad CBS! I’m sick of reality TV & medical crime shows! I’m also surprised that Gary Unmarried didn’t make the cut. The only show left on CBS is Big Bang Theory—hope that doesn’t get the axe! What’s wrong with CBS management? Don’t they get that we need more comedy in times like these?!
I am disappointed, I just realized it was cancelled – I dont watch a lot of TV but I generally borrow it from the library or watvh online. I caught it a couple of times on life time but I just thought- oh great I can watch it there as well as on CBS , for new episodes. Its probably being replaced with anotherrrrr reality show, blah. Oh well, good thing I dont depend on the networks for entertainment, they are very much out of touch with their audience; guess I will sticking more and more to viewing things online.
ABC should grab AONC. The show is the best. I am sad to see it go.
I think New Adventures of Old Christine and Gary Unmarried should be saved by someone, they are just too good to let go… I didn’t discover either of them until this past summer, and am a die hard fan of both these shows now… I blame the networks for not marketing the shows very well. Just a side note, I also just discovered Rules of Engagement and Big Bang Theory, and I thank god they will be around. Because of TV confilcts, my schedule ect… I do alot of my TV viewing online, so I think the Networks need to… Read more »
One of the funniest shows ever! They should start a petition on Facebook and see if we can’t get it back…
Thanks to this series, I discovered I needed testosterone cream. What the hell!? I just discovered the reruns of The New Adventures of Old Christine, relating to it & enjoying it very well. So, I was hoping to find it on Primetime & I’m truly disappointed. Sure, it wasn’t perfect every time. But it was always entertaining, and usually very well scripted, wonderfully acted, etc….
I thought the show was new this year when I saw the ads for it on tv. I had no idea that the show had ever existed…and I fell in love with it! The show is great, funny, and I think it is a comic version of the single moms living today. I’m not a single mom, but my mother is, I told her about it and she started watching it and fell in love with it too. I am so upset that the show had no final episode and that it just left me hanging….
It makes me sick that The New Adventures of Old Christine was cancelled, it was obviously one of the funniest shows on tv, and why are the networks cancelling these good shows?
I was surprised to find out about the cancellation. I’ve been on the hunt for a new season and couldn’t find it and finally decided to google it. 🙁 disappointment for one of my favorite shows. This was one of two shows that I always made sure to watch, the rest I don’t bother to follow and just see what’s on when I turn on the tv.
ABC should’ve totally picked this sitcom up along with Gary Unmarried. I didn’t even know about these two sitcoms until last year because I do not watch allot of TV, but if I had know about these two sitcopms I would have totally been watching them!!!
