In 2009, both Southland and Medium were cancelled by NBC but were then saved by other networks. Three long-running shows were recently cancelled last month and it looked like each had a good shot of being saved as well.
A couple weeks later, Law & Order and Ghost Whisperer have been denied a second chance and now, The New Adventures of Old Christine has as well.
The New Adventures of Old Christine follows a neurotic single mom (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) who has a hard time juggling a relationship with responsibilities at home and work. Others in the cast include Hamish Linklater, Wanda Sykes, Trevor Gagnon, Clark Gregg, Emily Rutherfurd, Tricia O’Kelley, and Alex Kapp Horner.
The sitcom has been a moderate performer for CBS from the beginning and has ended up on the bubble each year. For the past two years, ABC has been ready to pick up the show if CBS dropped it. Those were in the days when ABC wasn’t having much luck finding successful sitcoms of their own.
When CBS cancelled Old Christine this year, the alphabet network wasn’t as interested anymore because ABC already has some successful sitcoms with several new ones waiting in the wings.
This season, Old Christine aired opposite ABC sitcoms and didn’t fare very well. As a result, the network has decided not to pick up the Julia Louis-Dreyfus sitcom for season six.
The final episode of The New Adventures of Old Christine aired on May 12th on CBS. After five seasons and 88 episodes, there won’t be a final episode to wrap up the series.
On the positive side, reruns will begin airing on Lifetime and on local stations across the country in the fall.
What do you think? Should ABC have picked up Old Christine for season six? How would you have ended the show?

I watched this show periodically when it was on and liked it–but not as much as I do now that it is on Lifetime. It is hilarious! How could CBS have canceled such a great show?
I miss the show. It had too much talent, both on and off screen, to not be picked up by someone. Is there a chance a cable network can revive it?
LOVE the show! There are not many shows that demostrate the awkwardness of being a single mom in American society with such hilarity – it is a true parody – and that’s what the nature of theatre is about – an exaggeration of our true situations in life. I thought the writing excellent and it was a great catharsis for me.
I don’t watch a lot of tv, but this show delivered for me whereas the rest of it seems fairly crappy and over the top. Sad to see this show go…
So sorry to see this fabulous show go! So well written and funny, not to mention superbly acted- this was a rare gem. ABC definitely passed up a good opportunity to pick up a few viewers.
I loved this show!! It was truly one of the last comedies on TV!! Great cast, hopefully it will be picked up..please.
I loved the show, I’m watching it right now actually. I think it is so hilarious and I enjoy the humor. I’m from The Bahamas and I got all of my friends and family interested in this show.
So disappointed to hear that it’s been cancelled.
I just looked it up to find out when the new season starts…thought it seemed like a long hiatus. So disappointed it cancelled. Great show with a super funny cast!
One of my favorite shows!!! Cant believe it was cancelled! Please bring it back!!!!!!!
I LOVE this show. The entire cast is funny. I laugh my you know what off
and am sooooo sad to see it go.
This show was one of thew few different well written shows and it should be renewed. I am so upset that they keep shoving cop and lawyer shows down our throats and now you finally have a well written show and they cancel it and not pick it up. Please pick it up!!!!
I can’t believe it was cancelled and kept hoping it would be picked up! I love this show!
I can’t believe they canceled such a funny show. I’m disappointed. I’ve been wondering when it was going to start running again. I thought it was just on hiatus.
Please renew one of the best sitcoms on the air. Fire the bobble head who cancelled this show especially when the didn’t even have a season finale.
Oh my. I love, love, love this show!!!
I’m so mad at me for not watching it when it was the air. I’m mad at CBS for not bringing it to my attention.
I’ve since discovered it on reruns and watch it 2hrs every day. From 5-6 on the CW and 6-7 on Lifetime.
It’s sooooo funny. Wish they would bring it back. It’s a great show.
Very sorry to see a well written show end. The entire cast was very funny but Juia….what can be said about her other than sheer genius!!!! So very sorry to see the show go
I would not have ended it.
Please networks, show this hilarious, fantastic show. It didn’t even end well, a network at least needs to do another season to end it but please please don’t end it please?
