At the TCA press tour, Michael Lombardo, HBO’s president of programming, spoke about the future of No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency. Though it won’t be continuing as a TV series, there are plans to continue the story in the form of two movies.
No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency ran for seven episodes on HBO, from March until May in 2009. The comedy-drama was filmed on location in Botswana and follows Mma Ramotswe as she operates a detective agency. The cast includes Jill Scott, Anika Noni Rose, Lucian Msamati, and Desmond Dube.
This weekend, Lombardo said, “We’re talking to our friends at the Weinstein Company about the possibility of, and actually developing two scripts, possibly to do two movies. And if we can get the cast together and if everything can come together we’ve love to do it. So it’s alive.”
If they get the final go-ahead, the two HBO movies would likely be shot back-to-back. It seems they won’t be filmed completely in Botswana however.
It was reported last month that the show’s producers had relocated from Botswana to Cape Town. The Botswana government, hard hit by the recession, balked at the idea of subsidizing film production while South Africa doubled their rebate offer.
If the movies are actually made, they’ll be filmed mostly in Cape Town with occasional lensing in Botswana, the locale where the story is set.
What do you think? Are you a fan of No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency? Would you like to see it return as a pair of movies?

Great show should be continued as a series
My kids loved it no murders no sex no swearing And just goes to show that a female can do anything.
Really entertaining with a gentle and kind guiding hand – please give us more 2022
I really love the show although it’s 2022, I enjoyed the show and all the actors. I could not stop watching all the episodes, I watched all of them in one sitting, but I was so disappointed that it was not any more seasons. It would be so wonderful to have more seasons or movies of “No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency
Please bring either the movie or more of the series back.
The TV show is wonderful and I would be delighted to see the series turned into movies.
I hate that it was cancelled ! I would love to see it continue with a couple of movies.
My husband and I loved this program and were so sad to hear it was canceled. Please make it into a movie. You will need the same three main characters, however, for it to have the same impact as the original ! I’m thrilled HBO is making it available!
Please bring it back. I enjoyed the series very much! The acting was first class.
Nothing yet can match the #1 laddies detective agency. Since the cancellation of this program on tv I am not enjoying. I would suggest either to be base as it was in Botswana although moving to Cape Town. Featuring Botswana background also add the best character in the series.
I would be overjoyed to see more of No. 1 Ladie’s Detective Agency! We have been left with a cliff hanger as of now.
Please bring back the #1 Ladies detective agency!
I would love love love to see more Number One Ladies Detective Agency. Can’t wait!
I loved the show….I would watch reruns over and over…can’t wait for the movies
We would love to see more episodes of “The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency”, either on TV, or in movies.
My entire family WAS a great fan of this series , after having read the entire collection… that is until it ended on such a dark & murderous note, (with the jealous maid fondling a gun with which to blow Mma Makutsies brains out), without even allowing your audience to enjoy Mma’s triumph over her abusive ex.. Who ever wrote this f**ked-up scene into the script has successfully botched the plot … killing the entire series. What a bummer!!!
I’m guessing the scene with the jealous maid fondling a gun was made to give an issue that draws in viewers to season II. This was and is an excellent series. I am writing June, 2021 after watching the first season on HBO. I am so disappointed that there isn’t another season and I hope there are still plans for making the two movies based on the rest of the books. I also hope, as much as possible, they use the same cast of characters.
I have watched this series twice I enjoy the characters so much please continue with this either movies or series
