As expected, CBS has pulled the plug on their long-running drama, Numb3rs. A mainstay of the Friday night schedule, brothers Charlie and Don Eppes won’t be back next fall with a seventh season.
Numb3rs revolves around an FBI agent (Rob Morrow) and his genius brother (David Krumholtz) who helps solve cases with mathematics. The cast also features Judd Hirsch (as their father), Alimi Ballard, Dylan Bruno, Navi Rawat, Aya Sumika, and Peter MacNicol.
The cancellation doesn’t come as much of a surprise, especially when you look at the figures.
The ratings have dropped quite a bit in recent years. Last season fell to an average of a 2.2 rating in the all-important 18-49 demographic and 10.2 million total viewers. This season, the ratings dropped further still, to a 1.8 rating and 8.26 million viewers. CBS cut the show’s episode order from 22 to 16 installments last fall. While the official word was that CBS had an overflow of original programming, networks don’t usually cut the orders of successful shows.

The cast and crew filmed what could serve as a series finale and Morrow and Krumholtz signed on for new TV show pilots. While the actors would be contractually obligated to return to Numb3rs if CBS decided to renew it, ABC and FOX were confident that they wouldn’t.
Last week, it was confirmed that the show’s sets were being dismantled, another sign that Numb3rs was finished. CBS has now made the cancellation official.
On the positive side, Morrow will return next fall in a new series for ABC called The Whole Truth. He’ll play an attorney opposite Joely Richardson. Unfortunately, Krumholtz’s comedy pilot, Tax Man, was not picked up by FOX for the 2010-11 season.
What do you think? Are you satisfied with the way that Numb3rs ended? What will you miss about the show? Will you give The Whole Truth a try?

Numb3rs was one of my favorite shows and I’m really sorry to see it go. I will miss both David Krumholtz and Rob Morrow as I’ve been a fan of both for a long time. If it had been me who had to make this decision, I would have kept the show and tried to get some new ideas going in the writing department. I was worried with the last show, the way characters were headed overseas, that they might be ending the series, but I really wanted to see more of Larry and he seemed to be coming back… Read more »
terrible idea to cancel, this was and is one of the coolest graphically great actors, great characters portrayed and always a treat to end the week, i never missed an episode and wish they would have thought through again and again canceling shows to put in bad shows that get canceled before starting……………..we need to have the trackers note all the people that are watching online with commercials too, and also dvr with commercials, granted i skip them mostly, but how many me’s are out there wishing this did not happen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hope we can make statements, petition and get it… Read more »
Numbers was one of my favorite shows. I never missed an episode. I don’t understand why the ratings dropped so drastically. Maybe it should have been moved to a different night.
Numb3rs is an intelligent television show. Given that American television views are getting dumber by the hour, thanks to reality tv shows, intelligent shows are bound to have diminishing viewing audiences. As for me, well, I guess on Friday nights I’ll read a book.
I am disappointed that they are cancelling Numbers, it was the best show on Friday nites.
I also enjoy what see the Criminal get arrested but that they family most of the times together.
1. does Charlie and Amita go away
2. Does Don get married
Maybe the can move the show to another time slot. Friday is the hardest time slot because most people have drink after work .
I must be the kiss of death. Every time I like a show it gets cancelled. I don’t know who they use to get their ratings, but they should try a different selection process. I loved the characters on this show.
I will miss numbers once again cbs are going to lose a lot of fans to their retardation of what shows to keep and what shows to get rid of. i love coming home to watch it and I’m hurt to see it go. CBS if your watching or reading thanks
i too feel that they cancelled numb3rs too hastily. afterall it’s only season 6 and a shortened season 6 at that. there’s room for changes to get ratings up again. it’s a pity cause i really enjoyed it too.
I think this was one of the best series I have ever watched. That being said I will not be sorry to see it go. All good things must come to an end. The final episode pretty much nailed it. I will probably view reruns from time to time but I will live without new ones. I hope all the stars will show up from time to time in other shows; either cameos or as stars in their own rights. I think you develop a kind of affection for the actors and welcome seeing them again as other characters.
I loved Numb3rs as well. Now there really is no reason to turn on the TV on Fridays. That was a bad spot anyway, I mean unless you have kids…your prolly not watching TV on a Friday night.
Sorry to see Numbers come to an end. There aren’t many shows on TV that I MUST be home to watch, but this was one of them. I really enjoyed watching the show, as much for the math as for the relationships between the characters. Numbers inspired me to go back to college to study math. Now that I’m close to finishing my degree I find to my dismay that my inspiration to sweat through the more difficult classes has disappeared. There really isn’t a reason to turn on the TV on Friday nights anymore, so I guess CBS loses… Read more »
It doesn’t surprise me, though I think Numb3rs and House (FOX) are the two best shows on tv, you have to have a brain to understand and enjoy them. Sadly, most americans lack the capacity to understand past a sitcom. WAY TO GO CBS!!!
I still think a combination of high tech and psychology will draw viewers. I would definately be a fan.
I wish Numb3rs wasn’t cancelled though it needed an infusion of quality story lines. The romance baloney was just cheesy filler. I am sure the math geniuses at CalTech could have suggested many new scenarios that would have brought back the sparkle. I don’t like lawyer shows, so I won’t watch The Whole Truth.
I’m sorry to learn that Numb3rs was cancelled. It was a great show with great story lines. I think FOX acted too quickly in cancelling this wonderful show with good actors. They should have switched times or nights or anything to avoid it. All I can say is FOX’s loss and ABC’s gain! Of course I’ll watch The Whole Truth and hope it is a hit – and thumb my nose at FOX!
