First, FOX cancelled Lone Star and then, ABC cancelled My Generation. Not wanting to be left out, NBC has now cancelled Outlaw. The Jimmy Smits series has ceased production but viewers will still be able to see the remaining episodes.
Outlaw follows a Supreme Court Justice (Smits) who decides to step down and go back to being a lawyer in order to fight injustices. The NBC series also stars Carly Pope, David Ramsey, Jesse Bradford, and Ellen Woglom.
The series debuted following the season finale of one of NBC’s biggest shows, America’s Got Talent, and could only attract moderate ratings. In its regular Friday night timeslot, Outlaw’s ratings have gone from bad to worse. This past Friday, the show hit a new low in the 18-49 demographic with a 0.9 rating and fell to just 4.10 million viewers. It was in last place in both categories.

As we previously reported, NBC shut down production last week, supposedly wanting to wait to see if viewership got better in later weeks. If that was actually the case, they didn’t wait very long. Outlaw has been cancelled and the cast and crew won’t be returning to production.
For the time being, NBC will fill the 10pm timeslot with an expanded edition of Dateline. The four remaining episodes of Outlaw will be seen on Saturday nights starting on October 16th. An episode won’t be seen on October 30th because of a previously schedule Shrek special. The last episode of Outlaw will air on November 13th.
What do you think? Are you sorry to see it go? Why do you think it didn’t attract a bigger audience?

THERE IS A GOOD REASON WHY NBC IS THIRD IN THE TV RATINGS,,,,,,AND THEY PROVED IT FOR ALL TO SEE WHEN THEY CANCELLED “OUTLAW”….ONE OF THE BEST SHOWS I HAVE HAD THE PLEASURE TO WATCH, THINKING MAYBE THIS WINTER WILL NOT BE AS LONG AND BORING AS USUAL…..NBC IS OBVIOUSLY…..NOT TOO SMART………..LOOK BACK AT THE FIASCO THEY MADE OF THE TONITE SHOW……….THAT WAS ONE HUGH MISTAKE…… AT LEAST WITH THE TONITE SHOW THEY HAD THE PACKAGE TO AT LEAST BE SMART ENUF TO CORRECT THAT ERROR…………..WHAT NOW??? APOLOGIZE TO YOUR VIEWING OR WHAT IS LEFT OF IT AND GET “OUTLAW”… Read more »
I loved the show. It needed to be on a different night. Please bring it back!
Please reconsider reinstating ‘Outlaw’. It was a very nice departure from blood and guts crime investigations, overdone and predictable news television and insipid reality shows. I so miss Law and Order (featuring the amazing city of New York), and Outlaw filled the void with innovative and timely legal issues (that touch your heart) and believable side stories and ensemble cast. Give us TV drama traditionalists at least a modicum of consideration. It seems like we’ve been left out completely, and…I’m betting we’re still the audience that respond most to your advertisers!
If the “OUTLAWS” that run the networks we truly “SHARKS” in the TV game, they would do a “REALITY SHOW” check and open their eyes and ears to the public. Jimmy Smitts was a good cop…and good “booze kingpin” and a good lawyer. James Woods kept his show moving and interesting. These are “real life” programs. These shows tell how, like it or not, our world is operating today. Give these new shows a chance. Four weeks is not a chance. What’s next……CSI Fargo? Law & Order Eau Claire??? And how many news shows do we need? 20/20….30/30….DATELINE EveryDay. Reality… Read more »
Concerning “The Outlaw,”we are very disappointed this show was cancelled. It was refreshing to have something different than the CSI type series. When Jimmy Smits was staring in the show about the winery, it was our favorite show. We again liked this one, so figures that it would be cancelled. There are so many bad shows on that stay on. As far as we were concerned, “White Colar” and “The Outlaw” were the best shows by far this season. The one character, “Carly Pope” did bring the show down, however.
This show was different…. With the state of the world, we need someone looking out for the underdog. I stopped watching newtwork tv and started watching cable programs for the past 3 yrs. Cable TV “TBS, TNT and USA” started putting quality programming instead of all these stupid reality shows. When network tv season 2010-2011 started i though they finally got it. Everyone that watch tv don’t want to see scripted reality shows. Outlaw was one of those shows that made you come back to network tv. You gave up on the show too soon.
I could start off by venting as everyone else, I’m not…… Outlaw was a terrific show. However the lack of effort NBC did to market the show was horrible. I have friends throughout the course of 10 states and as I met up with each of them, none knew why I was so excited about this show they never had heard of…… I mean, I only knew about it because of a Jimmy Smits fan I am……. As I continued to find out so many people didn’t watch the show, I continued to spread the word and to find out… Read more »
Enjoyed this series very much. Very Sorry to see it cancelled. Really enjoyed the mixture of cast and the plots. There is so much garbage on with reality shows and such that it’s just another evening to not watch regular TV.
“OUTLAW” was the best new show on NBC this season. When you have Jimmy Smit, you have a winner. The story line was so refreshing as a “law” program. Needless to say, all programs measured by their appeal to the 18 year old. What about the rest of the population who view prgrams, spend money for the advertised products. What if everyone over 49 stopped watching TV and stopped buying products? ? Network TV continues to fail me as a viewer and I find myself watching the other channels much more . I know that the Networks own many of… Read more »
We really liked Outlaw, thought it was one of the best shows this fall. I really wish some other network would give it a chance, maybe some night other than friday or saturday.
While I enjoyed Jimmy Smits in NYPD Blue, since that show he’s accepted roles in poorly written, easily predictable shows with weak supporting characters. Shark also had uninteresting suupport charcters, but the stories required some intelligence to follow the plot and JAMES WOODS could carry the sgow all by himself. Jimmy Smits is talented, but he’s gotten fat and no longer challenges himself in his roles. Compasre to Good Wife, for example. Every character is complex and facinating, and the plot line is multi-layered. OUTLAW was just stupid. Too bad.
This was a great show. I can’t stand these reality shows. If I want reality I will look outside or watch the local news. When I watch TV I want entertainment. This one hour show wasn’t long enough. That show sould have been at least 2 hours long. It was so exciting that it seemed to last about 20-25 mins..
Any T.V show that depicts a minority in a positive light is always cancelled. This is the 2nd show which featured Jimmy Smiths that was cancelled. I firmly believe it is a backlash against President Obama. As long as the show has minorities on who demonstrate buffoonery, then it has staying power. The reality shows that are on,are an outrage. I deem they put these kinds of shows on,so the American people won’t perceive what is really transpiring in this country. There are so few shows on television that are of any consequence, and clearly Outlaw” was one of them. If the… Read more »
NBC you suck, Outlaw was a great show and I watched it every week, I am so sick of all those ridiculous reality shows, who is watching that crap anyway. Get rid of reality garbage and keep awesome shows like Outlaw. PS why are you people still depending on the Neilson ratings, when there are better ways to determine who is acutally watching what, if you used email or the internet to count veiwers, you would not be cancelling great shows like Outlaw.
Loved the show–sorry to see it go. I recorded all the episodes, and I thought it was a well done, well thought out show.
Outlaw was a very good show and I like the way each enteracted with each other-in other words that was good to show that they could have been “real” –I am very sorry to see it let go
