In the past, Kelsey Grammer and Martin Lawrence have both had successful sitcoms that ran for many years. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like the duo’s new FX sitcom, Partners, has much of a future. It’s very likely to be cancelled.
On Partners, a snobby lawyer (Grammer) and an overly ethics-driven lawyer (Lawrence) become partners and end up helping each other get their lives in order. The rest of the cast includes McKaley Miller, Telma Hopkins, Danièle Watts, Rory O’Malley, and Edi Patterson.
As you may recall, FX made a 10/90 deal for Partners with Lionsgate TV and Debmar-Mercury. If the sitcom’s first 10 episodes reached a certain ratings threshold then the cable channel was obligated to order 90 episodes for season two — assuring the studios would have enough episodes for a (potentially very lucrative) syndication package.
Charlie Sheen’s sitcom, Anger Management, has a similar deal and this week, the 67th and 68th episodes of that sitcom’s 90 installment second season aired. George Lopez’s Saint George comedy also had a 10/90 deal but drew poor ratings and it was cancelled.
Deadline reports that it’s highly unlikely for Partners to go past a single season and it’s easy to see why. The ratings have been absolutely dismal. This week’s pair of episodes averaged a 0.12 rating in the demo and a mere 415,000 viewers — far lower than Saint George ever dipped.
Supposedly, FX hasn’t reached a decision yet but, unless there’s some sort of miraculous turnaround, it seems like Partners is already doomed to be cancelled.
What do you think? Do you like Partners? Do you think it should be cancelled or renewed for a super-sized second season?
Please do not cancel Kelsey again! Bring it back Please!!
Partners is a great show. It is the only sitcom that I watch. I look forward to it every week!!!
I love the show!
Love the show.
I like the show. It gives a chance for Grammar and Lawrence to redefine themselves. This sort of journey to hit that new sweet spot takes a little time. It’s like a fine wine that ferments with time. I do believe the series will get better as time goes on. Give them that chance and don’t jump the gun.
I cannot believe that this show might be cancelled. It is so funny that my husband even likes it. I like the two main characters a whole lot. With all the reality shows this one
is interesting and the 2 main characters seem to work well together. I think in real life
that they even like each other. The show looks like it fun to make as well as to watch.
I hope it is given a chance to make it. Please give it more time.
My husband (Japanese) and I (Dutch/Canadian) both love the show with its multi-echnical humour, the blending of opposites, the keen wit, clean enough humour and potential range of topics. Why do some of the shows with the most depth get the chopping block?
Finally, a funny show and they’re thinking of cancelling it? I think that would be a big mistake. Give it another ten at least. Has the potential of being as good as Big Bang Theory or better.
Please don’t cancel partners me and my son loves the show. We watch it every Monday night .
I think that the first four episodes demonstrated the difficulty that the director(s) were having reconciling these two creative but disparate talents. After that the show started getting funnier, the ideas clicking and the characters more believably funny and less exaggerated. I think that ten episodes is not enough time to really gage. The public is so cynical and critical, and some viewers so used to seeing both Grammer and Lawrence in their previous long-term typc-cast roles, that it will take a little longer to gel the series. More time is needed. Grammer seems to have eased in to a… Read more »
Please bring partners back. Very funny show. The 2 main characters have chemistry.
PARTNERS WAS AN EXCELLENT WELL WRITTEN SHOW. I had many laugh out loud moments, I am also a huge fan of both Martin Lawrence and Kelsey Grammar. Please don’t cancel the show.
Please renew partners for a second season. Think about recasting the female investigator with another actress. Maybe Peri Gilpin. Also replace or ditch the tv daughters. Get better writers!
I think its is very funny, my friend and my son watches it. please don’t cancel the show
I think this is a great show, it might need stronger comedian writers but other that I love watching Martín Lawrence and Kelsey Grammer playing this role. Please don(ycCancel the show
