The CW sitcom Reba, starring country-singing star Reba McEntire, is currently in its sixth season — though barely. The show was reportedly going to be cancelled last Spring but was saved at the 11th hour because the network didn’t want to pay a “kill fee” for not following through on a previous agreement.
Because of this, the popular sitcom was picked up for its sixth season but for just 13 episodes. Basically, the network feels that the show doesn’t fit their “desired demographic.” As a result, the new episodes of Reba didn’t debut until other CW shows had failed. When Reba finally did start it’s sixth season on November 19, 2006, it gave the network some great numbers. The sitcom even helped to boost the viewership of Seventh Heaven.
Ever since then, fans of Reba have been hopeful that the CW would realize the value of the show and order nine additional episodes (to complete the season) and to renew the series for a seventh year. It now looks like that’s not going to happen.
At last week’s Television Critics Association tour in Pasadena, CW President Dawn Ostroff reportedly declined to comment on Reba’s future. Later, it was quietly stated that the sitcom was done. Today, sources at TV Guide and MediaWeek are confirming that Reba has indeed been cancelled. There are four episodes left to air and word is that the CW will air the final two together on Sunday, February 18th.
Will there be some acknowledgment of the series ending? Hard to say. These episodes were shot in December when the cast and crew were unsure of the show’s future. Still, based on the experiences of 2006, I’m sure they may have considered they weren’t coming back.
There are lots of Reba fans out there so understandably there are tons of rumors floating around. One source at the CW reportedly said that the CW will indeed order the nine additional episodes soon (very doubtful now). There has also been talk that Lifetime (the cable channel that airs Reba reruns) has expressed interest in airing a Reba spin-off series. The spin-off would supposedly feature young married couple Van & Cheyenne moving into their own house and raising their new baby together. The rest of the Reba cast would appear as guest stars from time to time (and as a presumably smaller show budget would allow).
Is there still a possibility that Reba could be saved? Very doubtful but, like title character Reba Hart, this show is a fighter so you never know. Whatever happens, you can be rest assured, we’ll keep you posted. Stay tuned!
UPDATE: If there were any doubts, on January 26th, CW officially announced that Reba would end on February 18th.
Why? would anyone in their right mind cancel a HIT SHOW like REBA? are you cry about not making the ratings, well if you take REBA off i hope your station completely flops
Please bring Reba back. I’ve noticed a lot of petitions for the show on the web. Some need 1000 signatures and some need 1800. I wish there was a way we could pull them all togetheir. This can’t happen!!!
Hardly turn TV on anymore due to all the garbage the stations try to force down our throat. BUT, never missed an episode of “Reba”. Please reconsider and let her show continue. CW, you are making a big mistake; you have a true winner with “Reba”…don’t cut your own throat.
CW big wigs, you messed up. Reba is a great comedy that real people can relate to. Reconsider your mistake.
I cannot believe they cancelled Reba. This has been the network’s #1 show! It is sooooo awesome! This is ridiculous. They always cancel the good ones.
I think that everyone at cw got there smarts out of a crackerjack box and i am definitely not watching your stupid station anymore if you are getting rid of reba. It was the only show that my husband, kids, and I watched every time it was on. I hope lifetime takes it up and takes all of your ratings from you. Your other shows are stupid or overrated.
It really is a shame that a good family series would be cancelled. Hopefully another station will pick it up!!
…if anything they should cancel friday night smackdown. that show is trash!!! CW’s cancellation of What I Like About You and Reba and continuation of 7th Heaven will be regretted. seriously.
CW is dumb. They cancel Reba, which was #1 on their network and order new episodes of 7th Heaven a show thats basically dead. Good job CW. That was the only show that i watched on your network that wasnt in syndication. Thanks.
I think it stinks. And what is the CW thinking? High high ratings for all of those seasons should be telling them something…Hopefully the figure it out when it is too late and Lifetime is making the money.
Reba is one of the best comedies I have ever watched.
I am in my 50’s so that’s alot. Why cancel quality tv and leave on crap? Please change your minds and bring this show back. You will not be sorry as it has a big following.
Well, I guess this is yet another example of the Network Exec’s telling us what we like? My husband and I tivo every episode and sit and watch hours at a time. It’s cast was the best ever, all playing off of each other perfectly ! We laughed so hard we cried at times. This is the only show we watched on this network, so no more for me.. I agree it’s like a modern day Lucy type, just a fun, crazy mix of personalities that will be sadly missed by us. Hopefully another network who does care about it’s viewers… Read more »
I’ll be sad if Reba doesn’t have anymore show because it makes me laugh and it cheers me up all the time everytime when I watched it.
Why would u even think of taking REBA off. Big Big Mistake!!! It is truly a fun show and with everything going on in the world today it gave us something to laugh about for awhile every week. U keep keep a show like wrestling on whic is truly no talent and fighting which we don’t need to teach our kids. Hopefully someone else picks this great show up and as for WB its time someone took them off the air.
