Late in the 2013-14 season, NBC and ABC launched three new Sunday night dramas — all with single word titles. NBC cancelled Crisis and Believe while ABC renewed Resurrection for a second season. In retrospect, was that a good decision for the alphabet network? Should Resurrection have been cancelled as well?
On Resurrection, a small town in Missouri is turned upside down when long-dead loved ones return after 30 years. The cast includes Omar Epps, Frances Fisher, Matt Craven, Devin Kelley, Mark Hildreth, Samaire Armstrong, Sam Hazeldine, Landon Gimenez, and Kurtwood Smith.
Debuting on March 9th, Resurrection had a great launch with a 3.8 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 13.9 million total viewers. (Those numbers are about the same as this season’s How to Get Away with Murder’s debut.)
Unfortunately, Resurrection’s ratings dropped about 19% in week two and they kept falling nearly every week of the eight episode season. The seventh installment hit a low of a 1.9 rating with 7.85 million — half of the premiere’s demo rating.

Considering the poor luck that the alphabet network had last year launching new dramas, it wasn’t much of a surprise that ABC renewed Resurrection. They didn’t have much choice. However, the ratings slide was a terrible sign for the future.
Now, the show has been really struggling in season two. After a positive second season debut, the ratings quickly dropped, falling to new series lows week after week. The October 26th installment registered a mere 1.2 rating with 4.36 million.
ABC recently ordered full seasons and additional episodes of many of their new and older shows. It was a telling sign that the network is only producing 14 episodes of Resurrection this season.
Unless the ratings improve, it looks very likely that Resurrection will be cancelled by May. Hopefully, the writers will give viewers some degree of closure before the end.
What do you think? Did you stop watching Resurrection? Should it have been a mini-series? Is competition from The Walking Dead and football the cause of the low ratings? Do you think Resurrection should be cancelled or renewed for a third season?
IT MOVES TO SLOW FOR TODAY’S TV AUDIENCE AND IT’S NOT GIVING US ANY ANSWERS. LOTS OF NIGHTS I JUST WANT TO TURN THE CHANNEL IT GETS SO BORING BUT I’M AFRAID I MAY MISS THE ANSWER AS TO WHY THIS IS HAPPENING, PICK UP THE PACE PLEASE.
best show on TV. even better than the book. don’t cancel it!!!!!
I have watched this show from the beginning never missing an episode. It has me hooked and I want to see it continue. I have enjoyed every minute and can hardly wait for the next episode!!
I love this show. I see so many new story lines..especially surrounding Rachel’s baby. It is sad that networks are not willing to keep quality programming: it is unfortunate!
This is one of my favorite shows. If it cancels I’ll quit ABC and return to reading.
We watch every week love it can’t wait till the next episode best show ever
Too little plot with each episode. Soooo many commercials. I was hoping when it started that it might be a movie of the week, no such luck. As as viewer, I never know when it will be back on . Soooo many breaks between episodes.
I know that ABC takes too many breaks between episodes, they do run more commercials than show, that does need to stop, they do that to all if their shows, less commercials more show, less breaks on resurrection more episodes. #renewResurrection
The storyline really picked up towards the end of the season, but by and large, it was just too slow moving. I can see why some people would lost interest.
I love this show! Has me on the edge of my seat! Please don’t cancel it!
OMG NOOOOOOOOOOOOO ITS MY FAVORITE SHOW EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love this show! Please don’t stop the show! Every show I get into cancels! If this show ceases, I will most likely be done with tv all together! Tv is becoming a past time anyway. I pick and choose what I want to watch on my pc or tablet. I only use my tv to order movies. Paying for tv is ridiculous! They should move it to Netflix or Hulu or somewhere else if abc doesn’t want it.
Penny, I agree with you. Send it to Netflix. They have several original series of their own, some I’ve watched. I’m sure they could do a better job than ABC, making it more likely to continue.
I think it should continue. I love the show. I think the breaks in the series may be hurting it, and I mean the ones during the season for holiday, specials, etc., but I also think it is competing with The Walking Dead, football, and wrestling are not helping. We always dvr it, cause I’m not missing an episode and I like to “rewatch”. Lastly, that ending was creepy, they can’t cancel now! WAIT! One more…what would happen if Agent Bellamy and Maggie (whom I love together) were to have a child…….dundundun!
Well, I do like the show so I wouldn’t want them to cancel it, but if not many people watch it, I guess they will, business is business… And apparently they don’t care too much about giving viewers ‘some closure’… I’m sorry about the actors too, I think they were all very good in their roles.
Needs closure. And not too rushed. The finale seemed a little rushed “President making a speech…” followed by scene of Agent Bellamy in his new office at “Bureau of the Returned” (presumably in Washington?) with only the final scene as a teaser in case ABC doesn’t cancel the show. Unanswered questions… the connection between Jason and the baby….
…. wrap it up!
They’re not going to wrap it up, ABC hasn’t told them if they have another season yet, they’re going to wait until closer to May, so they have to leave it open, just in case they get more episodes, but not so much that they can’t claim they tried to wrap things up. The only time you don’t get unanswered questions is when the show runners know for a fact that they’re done before they film the last episode.
This is one of the best shows on tv!! I love this show! More PLEASE!
