Though the networks are overflowing with reality series this summer, there are some new scripted TV shows. One is Saving Hope, a medical series that NBC has licensed from Canada. Will this one stick around or be cancelled instead?
As Saving Hope begins, a hospital’s charismatic Chief of Surgery (Michael Shanks) suffers a massive brain hemorrhage on his wedding day and ends up in a coma. This leaves the hospital in chaos and his fiance and fellow surgeon (Erica Durance) in a state of shock. It doesn’t help matters that her former boyfriend (Daniel Gillies) — also a brilliant surgeon — has arrived to work at the same facility. Others in the cast include Michelle Nolden, K. C. Collins, Kristopher Turner, Julia Taylor Ross, Ben Ayres, Huse Madhavji, Salvatore Antonio, and Glenda Braganza.
In terms of the ratings, Saving Hope debuted on June 7th with a disappointing 0.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 3.24 million total viewers. It ranked in a distant fourth place, garnering less than half of what CBS drew with a second place repeat of Person of Interest. It was truly a terrible performance.

The following week, the demo remained the same and the viewership grew slightly, to 3.98 million. It was in fourth place in the demo once again.
Of the eight summer programs that NBC has been airing this summer, Saving Hope is dead last and is doing even worse than the network’s Rock Center with Brian Williams. On our summer ratings report card, the show has an “F” grade.
While NBC is likely paying very little money to air Saving Hope, the ratings are so poor that there seems to be no reason for the network to bring it back for a second season. The show could continue in Canada however so, if that happens, US viewers could potentially be able to see future episodes if NBC drops it.
But, what do you think? Do you like Saving Hope? Do you think it should be cancelled or renewed for a second season?
Isn’t it a bit too early to say if the show should be cancelled or not after only two episodes! Let’s see how it’s going on!
A show can only do well, if the network it’s on, promotes it. NBC hasn’t done crap. You think Dallas would’ve done so well if TNT hadn’t promoted it? I think not. If Saving Hope fails in the US, it’s not because of its premise, actors, characters or storytelling, it’s because NBC hasn’t gotten off their lazy ass to promote it.
This show is definitely a keeper! It has heart, potential, and top notch acting! It would be a shame if it was cut before it’s time like so many excellent, intelligent show do. Sure, it’s not trendy or full of teenage angst, but it is appealing to a more adult and thoughtful crowd that do actually watch TV.
I adore this show! It’s the only reason I watch tv. I despise reality shows! I can’t stand talk shows or game shows! The only channel I ever watch is BBC…. Until Thursday nights! Granted, I came to the show for Michael Shanks, but I’m staying because it’s a great show! It focuses on the love between the two main characters, while still keeping up with the secondary characters and the story lines of whatever emergencies there are that episode! It spreads the message to never give up! Things can look hopeless and dark, but if you hold on and… Read more »
NBC has a bad habit of not promoting imported shows. They did the same thing with the BBC Show Merlin. It bombed on NBC, but Thrives on SyFy. Keep Saving Hope. It’s a brilliant show with awesme acting.
Definitely Keep! Such a great story, let them tell it…
Keep it. It is the only show I am even bothering to make am effort to watch.
NBC please keep Saving Hope on the air in the US!!! This is a great show with wonderful talent both in front of the camera and behind! It would be a shame to lose this show! 1.6 million people who watch don’t watch because its bad but because its good. If the show is promoted more (check out the fans on twitter promoting) by NBC I believe the ratings would actually improve in the US and surpassed the Canadian audience. This is the next best MED DRAMA on TV. I’m Saving Hope that you will continue to air this show… Read more »
Actually make that 3.98 million viewers. If you would promote the show like CTV is doing this show could be an NBC hit!!
Best medical drama around at the moment is definitely Nurse Jackie.
Keep it. This 18-34 year-old female loves it. Perfect combo of science, romance, spirituality, and sex. The leads and supporting cast are great. I’m falling in love with Joel and Gavin. Alex is fantastic as well. I really enjoy the science vs. spiritual theme and the show’s humor.
Please please keep it going – it’s a good show already and has GREAT potential to become a very cool hit show. I love the main characters already after only the 2nd episode and usually that doesn’t happen to me in a new TV show because they always need time to develop and grow!
So, don’t throw it away in favor of some trash TV shows… I have lots of hope for Saving Hope!
NBC needs to step up with promotion on this show. I happen to be channel surfing and stumbled upon the show. I saw a scene with that the girl who played Lois Lane on Smallville and the dude from The Vampire Diaries. I like their dynamic right away so I decided to keep watching. I really enjoyed it. I had no idea about this show b/c I see no promotion. I think the ratings would do a lot better if there was an effort. NBC is setting it up to fail.
Please Renew #SavingHope for a 2nd season and more seasons to come and nbc please help promote the show!
excuse me NBC, but i think you’re lacking of promotion for this great medical drama. Do not waste the talents of Erica,Michael and Daniel for God’s sake!
I love the show and the star, Michael Shanks. Its the only thing I watch on Thursdays. The characters are very strong and the writers are giving them depth and emotions. Bringing in the ex boyfriend and ex wife adds even more details. Plus, the second show added a lot with the newly discovered ability for some communication. Keep it and let it grow. I love it.
