Last night marked the end of the first season of Secrets and Lies (it may be the end of the series as well) and many viewers were less than pleased about how it ended.
On Secrets and Lies, a house painter and family man discovers a neighbor boy’s dead body in the woods and he quickly goes from being a Good Samaritan to a murder suspect. The lives of everyone around him are turned upside down by the ensuing police investigation and media attention. Did he really do it? The series stars Ryan Phillippe, Juliette Lewis, KaDee Strickland, Natalie Martinez, Dan Fogler, Indiana Evans, and Belle Shouse.
In the finale, we learn that Abby killed Tom and says that the two kids had planned to run away together to be rid of their turmultuous households. She says that he wanted to go back, she panicked and accidently killed him wiith a flashlight. Ben decides to protect his family and take the rap for the murder. Cornell knows the truth but can’t talk him out of it. Abby goes free and Ben goes to jail for a crime he didn’t commit. The twist is that Abby killing Tom wasn’t accidental. Her murder of Tom was brutal and premeditated. End of season… or is it?
In an extra scene released by ABC, the story picks up 14 months later. It’s Natalie’s 18th birthday and she and Dave are quietly celebrating at a coffee shop. Cornell walks in and tries to convinces Natalie that she finally needs to clear her father’s name. It seems like Natalie will testify. Unfortunately, it sounds like Ben has died but Cornell doesn’t explicitly say that. In the final moments, we see Cornell approaching Abby and her mother as they’re on a shopping trip. Here’s the video:
What do you think? Do you like the extra scene? Would you like to see more of these characters or has this story been wrapped up enough for you?
I don’t understand why the writers and ABC think the viewers would be pleased with this finale. And Ben may be dead? Too many questions left unanswered. So, to me, the last episode was not the finale.
I agreeing most people, the story isn’t over we need more. Your fans are counting on you!
Very disappointed in the finale. Or so called finale. How did Ben die? Is to be continued for next season whenever that is. The same cast should, I hope continue into season 2. Julliette Lewis is amazing. She brought much to this show & Ryan Philipe was outstanding. What should we expect next? Don’t leave us with all of these questions.
I loved this series! It kept me suspense each week and hope is it brought back for a second season with the original cast. Cornell could have cleverly played this out to locate Abbey! Yes, many unanswered questions… Her character needs to be held accountable for what she did.
Have really enjoyed. Would like to see Ben released, know what happened to his wife, Tom’s mother, Ben’s friend, Dave, and now what about Abbey?????
To many unanswered questions. Can’t we have at least one series where all is answered?
It sure would be better, to me, than 3/4 the junk on tv most of the time!
Reminded me of the play/movie “The Bad Seed”. Very good show. Hope it returns.
Story should continue at least to wrap it all up. Love the characters and actors that play them. Don’t leave us hanging. There’s a great continuing story line here. Please make it happen. The extra scene just wasn’t enough.
Please DO NOT CANCEL !!!! I love it and you can’t leave it with him in prison.
LOVE THE SHOW; TOTALLY ADDICTED. LOVE CORNELL AND ALL OTHER CHARACTERS….PLEASE DO NOT CANCEL
I Love this mini series ! would truly like to see this resume in the fall…..Abby has to face the consequences of pre meditated murder….as well as clearing Ben’s name ! Yes, parents love unconditionally, but you do not cover up murder !
parents who really love their kids, mature responsible parents, would see when a child needs help and get her the help she needs. That’s the thing that bothered me most about the ending, the parents behaved totally stupidly, the voice of reason was given to the older sister, Natalie, while the parents act like it never occurs to them that their little girl needs a lot of help, the characters are lacking in empathy, as far as they know, she was troubled by her family break up and tried to run away with Tom and accidentally killed him. Realistically, there’s… Read more »
I can’t see the video but I still agree. They drew out the investigation on Ben for 10 episodes so it could work for a second season hunting Abbey. That girl is a psychopath so I know now that everything went back asswards she’ll be devising crap and causing more problems trying to manipulate a fix. Would make for an awesome watch. Just sayin.
Please bring back. I love it.finish the story.
I think it was a wrap….didn’t Ryan Phillipe only sign on for one season. I think the show should continue with Cornell and another child psycho/sociopath! It was well done, exciting and intriguing. It reminded me of True Detective. Really kept the mystery going!
I think it was a wrap…very well done and concluded! I would like to see a second season with Cornell and another child sociopath mystery. I think Ryan Phillippe only signed on for one season. It was a really good, interesting and exciting series!! Kind of like True Detective!!
I love-love-love this show! Every episode of the first season had my rapt attention. I actually figured out in Episode #3 that Abby was the killer, but kept hoping that I was mistaken. Oh well. My DVR did not record the Cornell Confidential ending, so I am very glad to have watched it. Although the notion of Ben’s passing must disappoint a lot of people, IMHO the writers are taking the story in a great direction. After all, child psychopath killers need to be stopped … and the relentless Cornell is just the person to do that.
