TV show description:
Based on the Australian TV series called Secrets & Lies, this drama series tackles a different case each season. The first season revolves around a man who goes from being a Good Samaritan to a murder suspect.
Ben Crawford (Ryan Phillippe) is a handsome and decent family man who works as a house painter. He discovers the body of his neighbor’s young son, Tom Murphy, in the woods. He soon becomes a suspect in Tom’s murder and his life is turned upside down. In trying to clear his name, it is Ben who peels back the layers of these suburbanites’ lives in their quiet cul de sac, revealing their dirty little deceptions and all-too-crowded closets that are overflowing with skeletons.
Prior to his discovery, Ben had his normal share of parenting problems with his teenage daughter, Natalie (Indiana Evans), and smart-as-a-whip 12-year-old daughter, Abby (Belle Shouse). These are in addition to the usual marital struggles, which have lately come to a head. Ben’s wife is Christy (KaDee Strickland), a local realtor who he’s been with since they were both 19 years old.
Christy finds her feelings for Ben complicated by his deadly discovery and the relentless police and media attention on their family. Natalie is a typical 16-year-old with an attitude. She’s upset by Tom’s death, a little boy she used to babysit. And Abby, who is bothered by the state of her family and is fiercely loyal to her dad, is deeply concerned but hides her feelings.
The one person Ben can unload on is his childhood friend, Dave Lindsey (Dan Fogler), who’s also a tenant in the Crawford’s guest house. He lives a cheerfully irresponsible life, but is basically a good guy who’s very supportive of Ben and the girls.
Four-year-old Tom’s mother is Jess Murphy (Natalie Martinez). A woman who has suffered her own indignations in a broken marriage and is crushed by her son’s death.
Is Ben innocent or guilty? He is fighting to keep his marriage, kids, job and reputation — while barely clinging to his sanity. As the investigation progresses, the close knit community starts to come apart at the seams, unraveling until the case’s conclusion.
Heading the investigation is the unflappable and formidable Detective Andrea Cornell (Juliette Lewis). She’s always the smartest person in the room . But that isn’t to say that she isn’t hiding something. Unfortunately for Ben, once she has a suspect in her crosshairs, she doesn’t let go.
In season two, Cornell is investigating a new murder case. Smart and educated, Eric Warner (Michael Ealy) is attending a party to honor his dad as he passes over the reins of the family company. Tragedy strikes when Eric’s wife, Kate (Jordana Brewster), is found dead. Life, as he knows it, is over. Cornell immediately puts the grieving husband in her crosshairs. As Eric battles to prove his innocence and save the family’s company, he discovers that his beloved Kate and the rest of his family are not who they appeared to be.
Episode #20 — The Truth
Patrick grapples with his new reality, as Detective Cornell closes in on Kate’s killer, and the murderer is finally exposed. Meanwhile, Danny frantically continues his search for his daughter, hoping to get one more chance to be a real dad. However, in the end, it is Cornell that faces a devastating surprise.
First aired: December 4, 2016.
What do you think? Do you like the Secrets and Lies TV show? Do you think it should have been cancelled or renewed for a third season?
I absolutely love this show. I think they show have more episodes please do not cancel every time I get into a good show it gets canceled for something stupid. This is a great show and can’t wait to find out who the killer really is. And this is already been a little different then the Australian show. In the Australian show Abby or whatever the youngest daughters name was was the killer.
i love the show. I still think he is not really his son. I think there was a glitch in the lab test. . But do you remember when the mentally challenged child was chased down in the woods and was so concerned about his IPAD but it got knocked out of his hand and went into the water and yet to be found or brought up again. ? There was something on it that he was hiding and was so freaked out when he lost it. We’ll see
LOVE THIS SHOW, CONTINUE< CONTINUE< CONTINUE!!!!!!
I soooo love this show. Great actors (even he kids). Stretch it out, keep it going. It’s so fabulous! I look forward to Sunday nights. PLEASE!!
Love the show. Hope it is not cancelled. Would like to see Ben become a cop and assist Cornell solving cases in other neighborhoods.
Love it so much
I missed the first two episodes because I didn’t want to stay up so late and don’t have means to record it. I think it is pretty intelligent for a network show and plan to watch it all the way through and wouldn’t mind seeing it after this case is solved.
Slove this case and start a new one! Good show….
If you don’t like it, don’t watch it. Problem solved.
Personally, I like the idea of a series – it’s better than going to a movie theater that jams a story in 90 +/- minutes. This way I get an in depth characterization of the various roles as the mystery unfolds.
My wife and I really enjoy this show. UT Was Recommended By I urge 34 year old son and his wife. Looking forward to the next episode every week.
Already watched the Australian show on Netflix, so unless they change the ending, what’s the sense of watching a rerun? Can’t ABC come up with any new shows? They also change shows like I change my underwear! Just get used to the schedule and it changes again. By the time the fall season comes back, I’ll forget what’s happened last year! No way to keep people interested! Might as well just watch Hulu or Netflix so I don’t have to wait till next week to see what’s happened on past seasons of shows! Cheaper than cable too! I mean as… Read more »
As a one to two part tv movie, it’s okay. But a ten episode series? I don’t think so. It’s kind of borning.
Seems very similar to the British Broadchurch then they felt they had to remake it and came up with Gracepoint. Gracepoint was a flop on Fox and was very boring. Now another remake of a similar Australian show. Can anyone come up with any new ideas instead of remaking things that weren’t a success originally. I really dislike this trend having a mystery playing out over a whole season. Pretty sad commentary on society that people think someone is guilty without any proof. So quick to judge.
I agree. The whole time I kept thinking “those people sure turned on him pretty quick” “tell your wife he was your son, even though you cheated you still didn’t know”. It was like the town people’s switch were flipped to…he’s a murderer know. Still will watch to see what happens even I these type of series getting old.
Basically the same as Broadchurch I think. Never cared much for that one even though I like Tennet
