Spoilers! Season three of FOX‘s Sleepy Hollow TV series went out with a bang. In the penultimate third season episode, the show killed off the late Sheriff’s son, Joe Corbin (Zach Appelman). Sleepy Hollow has survived the departure of other heavily featured actors including Orlando Jones, John Noble, and Katia Winter. Friday’s third season finale death was a game changer, though. Nicole Beharie’s Lieutenant Abbie Mills, who, along with Tom Mison’s Ichabod Crane, is one of the two main characters, sacrificed her life to stop the Hidden One.
In an interview with TVLine, Sleepy Hollow showrunner, Clifton Campbell, said that while there will still be references to Beharie’s Abbie, the character is gone. He said the actress will not return to the show as Abbie Mills. He did say the “idea of her” will be around in the future, “but not as the character Abbie Mills.” Do you think that leaves wiggle room of some sort?
As mentioned in the report, Abbie’s death will “activate another Witness.” If Sleepy Hollow is renewed for a fourth season, Crane will have get to her, before the government does. Here is more from Campbell, via TVLine, on his plans for season four, should FOX renew the supernatural drama.
TVLINE | What can you tell me about the group that Ezra mentioned to Ichabod in the graveyard at the end of the episode? How might it manifest next season?
That’s our way in to a Season 4 that looks forward to the different understanding about what being a Witness is all about. We ran the clock out on both Abbie’s Witness relationship and how she was instrumental in bringing Ichabod into this world, and understanding and giving context and framing to what it meant to be a Witness. Then her job was done, and she did what all Witnesses apparently do, which is to pass the essence of their soul on through the bloodline. The organization… is something we’re exploring should we be fortunate enough to have a Season 4.
TVLINE | Having Abbie sacrifice herself twice in the same season — fans might think, “Well, you brought her back last time…” What’s the fundamental difference between her going into the tree and her willingly entering Pandora’s box?
Well, she knew she wasn’t coming out of the box in the finale. She knew, because of what they learned in the catacombs, that the box was missing its hope, which is at the center of darkness and gave it context, gave it form. She knew she was giving herself to the box… that that meant she would not be coming back.At the midseason break this year, it was more immediate. The Shard of Anubis was going to blow; her sister and Crane and everybody in close proximity could suffer catastrophic loss. Abbie knows she’s giving her life up at the end of Season 3 to save the world. The difference is, from the audience’s perspective, is [at the midseason break] she had fallen into a realm that we didn’t know about. She didn’t die.
What do you think? Did you watch the Sleepy Hollow TV show’s third season finale? If FOX renews Sleepy Hollow for a fourth season, will you watch it, even though Abbie is truly dead? Tell us.
Like some of the other comments, I am truly sad to see the character Abbie Mills go. The way Nicole performed Abbie really made the show AMAZING! Abbie and Crane had the best chemistry. I liked the fact they never settled together keeping it interesting and me wanting more. The ending of Season 3 was unexpected and quite thrilling. I’m very impressed with the twist of actually killing a main character! A tad bit to soon for me but a show needs to have an impact if they want to continue. And I NEED Sleepy Hollow to continue! The concept… Read more »
Well said!
No. I thought they should have explored the two witnesses relationship. They never gave it time to evolve. Why? That was a deal breaker for me to continue watching the show. I continued to watch just for the two witnesses. Not anymore. Who ever is writing the story line should be fired ASAP! The chemistry between the two witnesses was the best I had seen in a while. Sad to see it end. I hope the show gets the axe!
No Abbie, no watch! That is the stupidest plot move ever! This show his gone down hill and sucks. Can it!
I will be watching season 4. But would love to see abbie’s character back. Part of enjoying the show is being able be build relationships with the characters. Like reading a great book series. I was even excited to see the horseman back. I think that’s why shows such as Mash, The Big Bang Theory, The Hobbit, etc do so well. You get to know the characters.
I, for one, and two with my wife would love to see a Season 4 of Sleepy Hollow. Even if Abbe’s character is gone, watching Crane seek the new witness under the nose of the Federal government while following Washington’s orders would be thrilling.
I will not be watching Sleepy Hollow without Nicole Beharie. The chemistry between her and Crane was the making of the show. They should have just made them a couple. Now I don’t care any more.
I am absolutely going to watch it. I have watched this show from the very beginning and have been on every adventure. To not watch, would be a shame to me and to Tom Mison and his character and the time vested. This is an incredible show with twist and turns at every corner. Not renewing it would truly be sad because we would not see the end of the story or the next adventure. I am a huge fan of Sleepy Hollow, I would miss Crane and his history telling So please renew to the fourth season
Thank You!
I am going to miss Sleepy Hollow. I removed it from my DVR list. I refuse to watch a show that has no respect for people of color. I loved Abby and Crane together as Witnesses. Even as Abby’s role became so small I still watched She always took the tough jobs. Going to Purgatory, lost in the Catacombs etc… She was sensational. Good bye Sleepy Hollow. Crane was okay but not exciting or relatable. A British guy saving an American town.
There is a majority of people of color on the show so I don’t see your problem. However the show as of the last season really reeks of overacting and bad acting at that. Too bad.. It started out with a good cast and a good plot. Sleepy Hollow…headless horseman..( remember? )
My fave of my top 5 tv shows. I’ve been a Great Fan of Sleepy Hollow since season 1. Truly unique in today’s tv genres! It’s innovative, intelligent, historically informative and mysteriously intriguing, my take. I think it’s a brilliant and bold move for the show to end season 3 to kill off The Leftenant, as she has exhausted her character’s relevance in the show’s central mythology theme. It’s exciting for me to anticipate season 4 with the theme transcending to the “Illuminati” concept and it’s puzzling connection to today’s secret society and its remarkable influences to the powers maneuvering… Read more »
Although, she is a character, how can you talk so glib about a woman’s worth just to place a man on a pedestal. Her being on the show did not or do not stop them from moving in another direction. It is not a bold move it is the coward’s way out. Instead of learning how to write for women and POC they rather kill them. And in this instance snatch their soul from their body and put it into another person. How disgusting…
I’m looking forward to Season 4! I will miss Abby and hope they can woo the actriess back, but I am still very interested in the show and how it will unfold. On to Season 4!!!
FINALLY THEY GOT RID OF ABBY…SHE COULDN’T ACT (ESPECIALLY NEXT TO ICHABOD), SHE ONLY HAD THREE FACES, AND NO SUBTLETY IN HER ACTING, SHE TOOK AWAY FROM ANY POTENTIAL GROWTH THAT SLEEPY HOLLOW COULD HAVE, AND LASTLY, THERE WAS NO REAL DEPTH THAT EVER CAME INTO BEING BETWEEN HER AND THE OTHER LEADS. NOW, MAYBE THEY CAN MOVE ON WITH BETTER, MORE COMPLEX PLOT LINES THAT USE SUBSTANCE OVER DUMING THE PLOT DOWN TO FIT ABBY INTO IT. EVERY OTHER CHARACTER, INCLUDING THE ONE WHO PLAYS JENNY IS BRILLIANT. GAME ON FOR SEASON 4, AND MAY THE NUMBERS RISE!!!
Why are you screaming? And good luck with those complex and better plot lines. With the hacks they have to write the show I doubt very much if they could deliver what you want. And putting down Nicole I imagine is accounting for your own shortcomings and failures in life.
I never liked Abbie Mills, so glad she is gone. Bring back Katrina and I will definitely watch a S4.
I can more than likely guess why you “never liked” Abbie, yet somehow want Katrina the Flop Witch back. You people are SO transparent. How sad.
If you want Katrina back I doubt very much you are in the market for good entertainment with quality and good acting. Enough said.
“Then her job was done, and she did what all Witnesses apparently do, which is to pass the essence of their soul on through the bloodline. ”
Those who have been viewing since day one knows the above is not canon for Sleepy Hollow. It is not who and what the Witnesses were meant to be. They do not know their own product. Just sad. They are making it up as they go along. That is why Season 4 will most likely be a failure. Poor planning, poor writing, no continuity and plot holes to drive a Mack truck through.
What the hell did he mean by Abbie bringing Crane into this world. She did no such thing. His behind popped up out of the ground and interfered with the life that she mapped out for herself. They need to just stop making up stuff. Did they even look at Seasons 1 and 2.
The show runners basically Retcon’d the ENTIRE series for this Hindenburg disaster of a finale. I hope they get renewed for S4 just so I can watch it burn and get cancelled two episodes in. For everyone claiming that the only lead the show needs is Crane because of “story reasons”, I’d like to remind you that in the original tale Ichabod Crane is an inept school teacher who has a crush on Katrina because she’s a shameless flirt and comes from money. The “Headless Horseman” is in all likelihood Abraham van Brunt playing a prank on Ichabod to scare… Read more »
