Cancel your season two plans, fans. There will be no second season of the Sun Records TV show on CMT. The story is ending with one season and has already been removed from the press site. The series is set in Memphis, Tennessee, during the early days of the Civil Rights movement and the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, and Jonah Lees. The CMT cast also includes: Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
Deadline reports:
While Nashville — which is half-way though its first season on CMT and fifth overall — has been renewed for a 16-episode sixth season, there are no plans to extend its companion, 8-episode period drama Sun Records, which chronicles the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, CMT’s head of development Jayson Dinsmore told Deadline.
“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night events, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” Dinsmore said of Sun Records, which got a boost by airing behind Nashville. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”
Sun Records: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 585,000 viewers. While those ratings seem low in comparison to broadcast network TV series, they fall between the other CMT TV shows we are tracking (i.e. Nashville and Still the King).
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV series? Do you think CMT should have cancelled or renewed it for season two?
I love this show. I think more baby boomers and music lovers would watch it if better promoted.
I love this show. I think more baby boomers woyld watch it if better promoted.
Crap,This was my favorite show.
I hope they reverse this decision before they woefully regret it. I won’t even attempt to be PC about this. Sun records was one of the best shows on television! I’m 54 and looked forward to Sun Records weekly. I have been expecting an episode 9, as the series was getting quite interesting. The only other show I regularly watch is The Americans on FX. Not interested in any shows that are apt to make me dumber, like reality shows with unrealistic people. Btw, I still buy lots of consumer products and I don’t expect to retire for 20 or… Read more »
I totally agree! Please give us this great show. I akso watch The Americans and Nashville.
Come on…
Very dumb CMT. This was the only show I came back to the channel to watch. I got hooked on it. Still have all the episodes recorded, and now, not another season. Goodbye once again CMT
Very disappointing. I am currently reading the book ‘Sun Records’ and the tv show and book were pretty much in sync. At the very least CMT give us a finale 2 hour special to wrap it up. Very cheesy CMT!
My husband and I loved the show. We are heart broken and aggravated knowing that there will no longer be anymore episodes. The show was very interesting and funny and seem to be factual. CMT had chosen very good actors to act in this show. It is very sad that it is over after only just a few episodes when there is still so much more to Sam Phillips and sun records to be shown to the public. This show shows our younger people where the music they love came from and needs to be continued.
very disappointed was really liking this show first i had watched cmt in years since what is considered country music is all crap now days really dumb choice hope it bites you in the ass good luck
I am so sick & tired of these stupid networks getting people hooked on shows and then deciding not to take it to it’s final episode since it could have only been a limited series anyway since it was following history. Stupid stupid stupid . No more watching anything new on CMT, they’re not to be trusted to care about their audience.
Need a season two…don’t leave us hanging
I just cannot believe CMT would cancel such an amazing show! Foolish move if you ask me.
Absolutely stupid. Has chad michaelbmurray ever not been successful. Stupid network.
Unreal, what is wrong w/these networks that they get you hooked on a show and then don’t bring it back, I’m very disappointed in CMT!!!
I liked it a lot. I hope they renew it!
I feel very let down. I have been wondering where the show went. Johnny, Jerry, hadn’t even hit it big yet. What a rip off! My wife and I invest our time and our interest in the show only to read now “it was always planned for a limited run.” The story was never told to completion and just left hanging.
Terrible! It’ll be a cold day in hell before we get involved in another CMT series.
I loved this show and am extremely sad to find out it has been canceled . Such a great cast … Bring them back !!!
