Cancel your season two plans, fans. There will be no second season of the Sun Records TV show on CMT. The story is ending with one season and has already been removed from the press site. The series is set in Memphis, Tennessee, during the early days of the Civil Rights movement and the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, and Jonah Lees. The CMT cast also includes: Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
Deadline reports:
While Nashville — which is half-way though its first season on CMT and fifth overall — has been renewed for a 16-episode sixth season, there are no plans to extend its companion, 8-episode period drama Sun Records, which chronicles the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, CMT’s head of development Jayson Dinsmore told Deadline.
“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night events, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” Dinsmore said of Sun Records, which got a boost by airing behind Nashville. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”
Sun Records: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 585,000 viewers. While those ratings seem low in comparison to broadcast network TV series, they fall between the other CMT TV shows we are tracking (i.e. Nashville and Still the King).
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV series? Do you think CMT should have cancelled or renewed it for season two?
Ridiculous! The story is not over! It covered Elvis’s start which I thoroughly enjoyed, but what about Jerry Lee Lewis? Johnny Cash? I cannot put in words how disappointed I am!
Ditto. these actors were so great too.
Of all the crap on TV this is by far one of best scripted shows on TV. Just goes to show who is running the networks these days. A bunch of millenials who do not know a thing about history or care. Lets have more superheroes, yea! Idiots
exactly. my first thoughts were exactly – “with all the crap on TV – and they cancel this show”???????
We loved Sun Records show. Lived for Thursday nights. Please bring season 2 on. I do not think enough people knew about it.
Oh, no! Can’t believe this! This show was terrific! Please reconsider!
I watched it weekly and enjoyed it a lot. I thought it was very entertaining.
My husband and LOVED this series. We DVR’d each episode and watched two or three times each! We liked the story line, the performers were very true to the characters they portrayed, the music was great, and we were teenagers during this time, so we know. Please change your mind, advertise it more, and BRING IT BACK! This was the big reason why I starting watching CMT again. Please reconsider!
Hate that Sun Records is not returning. Watched every week and enjoyed every episode. Was looking forward to the next episode….
Also another thing to add , THE ONLY REASON WHY I WATCHED YOUR STATION WAS BECAUSE OF I LOVED TO WATCH “SUN RECORDS” PLEASE BRING IT BACK TO FINISH THE STORYLINE TILL ITS END! now that its gone , no reason to watch your station !
I loved Sun records, it was a clean decent family show about something that actually happened in music history! I was looking foreward to season 2, it bridged the gap between old and new generations, my mom will be disappointed as she reallly loved watching this show she is 81 years old and reminds her of her younger years. We didnt have anything in common to watch on tv till Sun Records came along. I am verry Disappointed, Please do reconsider and bring it back till the end which i was looking forward to seeing how Johnny Cash, and Jerry… Read more »
Absolutely ludicrous. Awesome show that so many people love and you’re not renewing it. Well, maybe & hopefully some other network will pick it up. I’m 78+ & have watched since its’ inception back in Feb. RENEW RENEW RENEW!!!
The only “made-for-tv” series I have watched in years. I looked forward to
thursday every week for the next episode. I am really disappointed. I actually
had cmt added to my cable so I could watch Sun Records
me too. I was ready to cancel my cable and then kept it for sun records. well, that’s the end of that I guess. I am so disappointed. so many totally crummy shows on – and they cancel sun records?
This is so disappointing! All the unique, interesting shows have been cancelled this year while the silly reality and same old stuff remains! Great acting and music on Sun records.
exactly. same old stuff remains.
Should it run another season??? Absolutely! I am not a big TV fan just because I am too hyper to sit in front of a TV but when I heard about Sun Records I thought I would try it. I could have watched it every night if it were available. I am disappointed in the decision to stop it at the very height of it’s being. I was telling everyone that they need to watch this because it was third in line of best shows of all time, first being Sons of Anarchy and second being I Love Lucy! Yes… Read more »
I loved this show! To learn the back story of all these amazing artists is so compelling. I hope you bring it back in the future.
I liked this show and felt it had legs. Sun Records has a special spot in the Rock’n Roll Hall of Fame for a reason and yet we know so very little about it. Most series run one season too long, but I could have seen at least three strong seasons for this one.
With Nashville running out of gas; I might not need CMT any longer.
if Nashville can get 6 seasons – why in the heck is Sun Records being cancelled. ridiculous.
I am so disappointed and I am stunned !! Sun Records was a class act show – with great story-line (so much more they could have done with it), great acting, and great music. Why in the world would they cancel it? I am so unhappy – I was so looking forward to season 2.
I absolutely agree with Mary.
I really enjoyed Sun Records and felt like it barely got started, why would you cancel the series. I know for a fact not many knew of it and if they did there would have been a much bigger fan base. I myself was spreading the word as many I know did not know about the shoe. In my opinion the network should re-think the idea of canceling it and those of us who watched the joy of seeing more of it.
Totally agree Arlene – I was telling everyone about Sun Records on CMT.
