Cancel your season two plans, fans. There will be no second season of the Sun Records TV show on CMT. The story is ending with one season and has already been removed from the press site. The series is set in Memphis, Tennessee, during the early days of the Civil Rights movement and the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, and Jonah Lees. The CMT cast also includes: Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
Deadline reports:
While Nashville — which is half-way though its first season on CMT and fifth overall — has been renewed for a 16-episode sixth season, there are no plans to extend its companion, 8-episode period drama Sun Records, which chronicles the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, CMT’s head of development Jayson Dinsmore told Deadline.
“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night events, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” Dinsmore said of Sun Records, which got a boost by airing behind Nashville. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”
Sun Records: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 585,000 viewers. While those ratings seem low in comparison to broadcast network TV series, they fall between the other CMT TV shows we are tracking (i.e. Nashville and Still the King).
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV series? Do you think CMT should have cancelled or renewed it for season two?
My wife and I are both extremely unhappy with them canceling Sun Records. Every Thursday night we reminded each other that it was coming on. We are both born in the late forties and started interest in music by the late 50s and some of these stars had already needed and we relate to them. I think if they had advertised more on other channels or they would have got a much larger following. What a shame it was a good good series.
Born in the Forties – Grew up listening to Elvis, Johnny, Jerry Lee and Carl. Still enjoy their music. Please reconsider bringing “Sun Records” back for another season!!!!
Was looking forward to the continuation of Sun Records. Hope you reconsider.
Much better show than Nashville why would you ever cancel it until its cmpletion stay true to history and for God sakes bring it back for sason 2 and many others
Renew it was good. Stick with the true stories. Don’t fabricate.
This was a great show. I visited the birth place of Elvis and was so excited about this show. But just goes to show you that the viewer doesn’t matter to producer. Bring it back!!@
I don’t understand why sun records was cancelled I really liked it please bring it back
Finally a show my whole family enjoyed! Why would such a popular show be stopped just when itv was picking up so many followers?
FINALLY A SHOW MY WHOLE FAMILY ENJOYED! HOW CAN YOU STOP A SERIES WE ALL ENJOYED AND WATCHED WEEKLY? BOO TO CMT!
I never watch t.v., but I loved Sun records. Bring it back. I am 34 so I wasn’t even born when all this happened, but this music had such a powerful influence on society . The story should be told.
My husband and I LOVED it and have been watching and waiting for it’s return. Please, please, RENEW!!
Renew!!
It was a little slow to start, but after a couple of episodes it really started to pick up and I was really getting into it. They should continue it.
My husband and I really enjoyed Sun Records. I find it hard to believe there won’t beat second season.
Enjoyed this series very much. Please reconsider and don’t cancel
