Cancel your season two plans, fans. There will be no second season of the Sun Records TV show on CMT. The story is ending with one season and has already been removed from the press site. The series is set in Memphis, Tennessee, during the early days of the Civil Rights movement and the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, and Jonah Lees. The CMT cast also includes: Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
Deadline reports:
While Nashville — which is half-way though its first season on CMT and fifth overall — has been renewed for a 16-episode sixth season, there are no plans to extend its companion, 8-episode period drama Sun Records, which chronicles the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, CMT’s head of development Jayson Dinsmore told Deadline.
“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night events, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” Dinsmore said of Sun Records, which got a boost by airing behind Nashville. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”
Sun Records: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 585,000 viewers. While those ratings seem low in comparison to broadcast network TV series, they fall between the other CMT TV shows we are tracking (i.e. Nashville and Still the King).
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV series? Do you think CMT should have cancelled or renewed it for season two?
Please please please bring Sun Records back!!!! My family and I looked forward to it every week. My kids are 13 and 12 and loved learning about the music back then. We actually planned a vacation to Memphis this year because of this show. Why do the networks always cancel the good shows??? One can only watch so many reality shows. We need more family shows like this one.
AGREE !!!
I really liked the show. Very disappointed that it was cancelled.
I thought it was a great show based on actual facts. I don’t think CMT gave it a chance. I do not intend to watch any thing on CMT.
Loved loved the show!!!!!!!
I was looking forward to a second season of this show I thought it was really well done with great production values.Unfortunate it didn’t get the recognition it deserved.
very bummed that they cancelled Sun Records, I thought it was a good show
We would love to have the series continue. We have many friends who knew nothing about the show until we mentioned it. They all have seen productions of “The Million Dollar Quartet” and are anxious to see the series. We recorded all episodes, but lost the recordings when we upgraded to Hopper. Holy Crap!
Pretty easy to find season one online if you want to download it.
So bummed!!!! I hope another network picks it up. We were all left hanging……
My family and I really enjoyed the series and hate to see it go. I hope CMT reconsiders.
My daughter and I Really enjoyed Sun Records and am sorry there won’t be a season 2 as it was really getting good.
Very sorry to see it go. Drama was sometimes a little clunky, & the real Marion Keisker was not given her due in the show (story was at fault, not the actress). But the casting of the musicians was perfect, and their storylines involving & close to the actual history. (It was the 1st time I even found CMT on my tv lineup.) I looked forward to a 2nd season: too bad.
We love the history of rock, the influence blues musicians had on rock and how Sun Records tied it together. We’re more than just a little disappointed the decision was made to scrap the second season. Please, bring it back!!!
Enjoyed the show and sorry to hear it won’t be back for Season 2. It was an interesting trip back in time to show how some major stars were born into the music business.
We look forward to watching Sun Records. If we couldn’t be home we always dvr’d it.
Really disappointed that Sun records isn’t coming back! My husband and I really enjoyed the show and we’re looking forward to its return. We found it very interesting and entertaining.
