Cancel your season two plans, fans. There will be no second season of the Sun Records TV show on CMT. The story is ending with one season and has already been removed from the press site. The series is set in Memphis, Tennessee, during the early days of the Civil Rights movement and the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, and Jonah Lees. The CMT cast also includes: Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
Deadline reports:
While Nashville — which is half-way though its first season on CMT and fifth overall — has been renewed for a 16-episode sixth season, there are no plans to extend its companion, 8-episode period drama Sun Records, which chronicles the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, CMT’s head of development Jayson Dinsmore told Deadline.
“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night events, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” Dinsmore said of Sun Records, which got a boost by airing behind Nashville. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”
Sun Records: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 585,000 viewers. While those ratings seem low in comparison to broadcast network TV series, they fall between the other CMT TV shows we are tracking (i.e. Nashville and Still the King).
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV series? Do you think CMT should have cancelled or renewed it for season two?
If CMT cannot bring back Sun Records, please let some other network. I looked forward to this show each week. It was one of the best shows out there – second to none in my opinion, – such interesting characters with a lot more stories to tell on each!
Loved it. Bring it back!
I’m really disappointed to hear there will not be a 2nd season of sun records. It was awesome music history. I feel like it left us hanging.
I am very disappointed to read this. I really enjoyed Sun Records and was looking forward to the second season. Feel like we have been left hanging on everybody’s story and am hesitant to watch any other series on this network for fear of cancellation.
I loved watching the Sun Records series. This series just got started, only 8 episodes, where is the rest of the story? There is a lot of rich and raw talent to explore and learn about during this time period which needs to be completed. Please reconsider, CMT, for a second season.
I guess a bunch of future real life stars wasn’t gay enough
Like that show Nashville, first few seasons was good.
Please please bring back sun records I loved the show it’s what our music is all about there is history there as well I’m sure alot of viewers feel the same way I do about the show what would cmt do if it didn’t get the ratings CMT didn’t give sun records a chance
This news sucks!!
Great TV series. We hope CMT will reconsider a season 2 or at least an appropriate series finale, maybe a 2 hour special…
I agree with Mr. Bradford. I felt there is so much more after Episode 8, where is the rest of story? A series finale should be written to tie it all together and complete the story or another season???
My husband and I loved watching Sun Records and we couldn’t wait for Season 2 , very disappointed to hear its cancelled they need to give it a chance its about music history! Come on! We watched Still the King hoping it would be on the same theme , what a Stupid Silly show I’m sorry to say! Bring Back Sun Records it has meaning to the story,!
I loved it and I am very sad there won’t be anymore!
I grew up listening to everyone in this show. I would rather watch this series than most of the ridiculous reality shows that clog up time slots. This show is about the start of Rock n Roll. Please renew.
I can’t believe you cancelled sun records and kept the stupid show still the king
Too bad. One of the shows that we did watch and were looking forward to next season. Grew up in that time period and enjoyed it.
Why watch a network that puts out a very good show only to cancel in one run. Makes you think twice about starting to watch any other thing they put out. Chances are if it’s good it will be canceled. Why bother getting interested. Won’t be watching anything else they come up. Other networks have done the same thing and ended up with lost viewers. They learned an expensive lesson. Flip side , maybe Netflix or Hulu will pick it up and run with it. I’ll be watching if that happens.
