Cancel your season two plans, fans. There will be no second season of the Sun Records TV show on CMT. The story is ending with one season and has already been removed from the press site. The series is set in Memphis, Tennessee, during the early days of the Civil Rights movement and the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, and Jonah Lees. The CMT cast also includes: Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
Deadline reports:
While Nashville — which is half-way though its first season on CMT and fifth overall — has been renewed for a 16-episode sixth season, there are no plans to extend its companion, 8-episode period drama Sun Records, which chronicles the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, CMT’s head of development Jayson Dinsmore told Deadline.
“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night events, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” Dinsmore said of Sun Records, which got a boost by airing behind Nashville. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”
Sun Records: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 585,000 viewers. While those ratings seem low in comparison to broadcast network TV series, they fall between the other CMT TV shows we are tracking (i.e. Nashville and Still the King).
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV series? Do you think CMT should have cancelled or renewed it for season two?
Loved “Sun Records,” I truly can’t believe I’m left hanging without a second season.
So disappointed there will not be a second season. I watched every episode and loved it.
I watched every episode, and I really believe they should finish the story. Of course it wasn’t an exact telling of what actually happened! It’s a drama series–they have to spice it up a little. Although…I bet it isn’t as far off as people would like to think. BRING IT BACK!
Boot Nasheville and KEEP SunRecords!
I thought it was phenomenal, the actors were excellent and I loved the music, very disappointed if they don’t find a way to bring it back.
To say the show accurately depicted the story of what took place, is shameful! However, it was entertaining. I would continue watching if it were brought back.
we loved the series looked forwarded to it every week please bring it back many of our friends watch the show please continue thank you
Hard to believe they would cancel the story of rock and roll. Bring it back!
This is sad news. Was looking forward to season 2.
They totally need to do another season of this!
Come on already it was good.
My husband and I are so disappointed. We were looking forward to season 2. I wish CMT would reconsider.
I loved the show. This was something me amd my husband watched every week. We were excited for season and now we are disappointed. I hope they change their minds and bring it back out.
Loved Sun Records, unfortunately, just now got a chance to watch it after DVRing it when it played. My favorite of anything that I’ve seen on CMT. Take a chance on it for a second season; I’m confident it will be successful.
I loved Sun Records and watched every episode. I can’t believe it was cancelled. I’m 72 and lived through the birth of Rock ‘n Roll. I think they may have played to the wrong demographic. I was really looking forward to the next season. Loved the casting, especially the Lees brothers who played Jerry Lee Lewis and his cousin Jimmy Swaggart. I wish another channel would pick up this program.
Loved the show. Brought back many memories. Thought the casting was spot on. Please bring us at least one more season.
