Cancel your season two plans, fans. There will be no second season of the Sun Records TV show on CMT. The story is ending with one season and has already been removed from the press site. The series is set in Memphis, Tennessee, during the early days of the Civil Rights movement and the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, and Jonah Lees. The CMT cast also includes: Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
Deadline reports:
While Nashville — which is half-way though its first season on CMT and fifth overall — has been renewed for a 16-episode sixth season, there are no plans to extend its companion, 8-episode period drama Sun Records, which chronicles the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, CMT’s head of development Jayson Dinsmore told Deadline.
“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night events, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” Dinsmore said of Sun Records, which got a boost by airing behind Nashville. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”
Sun Records: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 585,000 viewers. While those ratings seem low in comparison to broadcast network TV series, they fall between the other CMT TV shows we are tracking (i.e. Nashville and Still the King).
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV series? Do you think CMT should have cancelled or renewed it for season two?
I thought the first season of Sun Records was great, and full of engaging tidbits about the beginning of the music world for some of the most famous singers. I too am very disappointed that it did not renew. The
producers just do not allow enough time for a great show to get discovered.
I just got through binging Sun Records. It is a mistake and such a disappointment that there will be no season 2! I’m so upset. It’s a great show!
“Sun Records” gave us a Cool look back at Rock n’Roll history,
we looked forward to each episode. Please bring it back!
We gave up on “Nashville” it turned into an annoying soap opera.
How disappointing. I was excited to see season 2.
We looked forward to this show each week. Very sad and disappointed to read it has been cancelled. It was nice to watch a show that taught about the history of these musicians. Sorry to see it go!
So bummed it was canceled, my husband and I loved this show!! I live close to Memphis and was hoping to find a way to be an extra on the show. This show needs to be picked up, it was very good!
My husband and I loved this show. So sad it was cancelled. Why????
I loved the show and was looking forward to Season 2. I’m really disappointed!!
I think its very unfortunate that CMT decided to cancel season 2 of Sun Records.
The sets, costuming, and character development were very well done. Perhaps CMT execs were a little turned off by an honest depiction of the humble beginnings of the genre. If so, its a pity, because the show did capture the raw power and excitement of the birth of Rock and Roll.
So disappointed there’s no season 2. Loved it!
I want season 2!!!!
As do I and my 3 neighbors!!!
I think the whole idea of letting viewers go back to a place where rock-n-roll started out, that gives us trying to visualize what the characters went through. Please have Sun Records come back
Loved this show really needs to be a season 2 atleast rethink the cancelation..
CMT dropped the ball on promoting this series. This was a very well done series and it’s a damn shame if it’s not renewed and properly promoted. For those of us who knew about and watched we loved it. It’s hard to have great ratings when no one knows about it. Promote it and give it another season and I would bet that the ratings would increase greatly. Come on CMT give us what we want and give it another season.
Loved Sun Records! The show needs to continue was a great story line with great actors. Very disappointed with CMT.
