Cancel your season two plans, fans. There will be no second season of the Sun Records TV show on CMT. The story is ending with one season and has already been removed from the press site. The series is set in Memphis, Tennessee, during the early days of the Civil Rights movement and the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, and Jonah Lees. The CMT cast also includes: Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
Deadline reports:
While Nashville — which is half-way though its first season on CMT and fifth overall — has been renewed for a 16-episode sixth season, there are no plans to extend its companion, 8-episode period drama Sun Records, which chronicles the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, CMT’s head of development Jayson Dinsmore told Deadline.
“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night events, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” Dinsmore said of Sun Records, which got a boost by airing behind Nashville. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”
Sun Records: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 585,000 viewers. While those ratings seem low in comparison to broadcast network TV series, they fall between the other CMT TV shows we are tracking (i.e. Nashville and Still the King).
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV series? Do you think CMT should have cancelled or renewed it for season two?
My husband and I were enjoying the show. It was unique in it’s ability to follow three separate stories that were interwoven by later circumstances. We were looking forward to seeing where it went. While based on true stories there was considerable creative license which gave it some unpredictability. Loved Billy Gardell as well as the other actors. Would definately vote for a second season.
Please bring Sun Records back! Loved that show and was so excited to watch Season 2. Please listen to the viewers.
Good riddance to a very poorly written series that defames the memory of all the people it pretended to portray. Colin Escott has lost all credibility as a historian. However, The actor who played Sam did get his vocal mannerisms down to a “T”.
I’m disappointed !!! I loved the stories of how some of the greats got started !!! I don’t understand, if it was doing well……it was a definite in my TV listing every week !!!
I can’t believe this show is cancelled. It is one of the best written tv shows I have seen in a long time. The cast is amazing!! And the storyline kept me me wanting more, it was hard to wait for next week for it to come on again. Please rethink about about a second season and bring this amazing show back on tv. PLEASE! !!
I love this show and want to see more more more! The young man playing jerry lee is fantastic! He has all of his mannerisms down pat! Please bring it back!!!
What a bummer! We really enjoyed the show!
Disappointed to find out that it has been cancelled, just made my first trip to Memphis and toured Sun Studios this past Feb. So much music history to be told.
I would so love to know more about Sam and the entertainers.
What do these hicks watch on CMT? Steve Austin Skull Cracking? You know what’s sad? It just confirms the idiocy of the hicks that view this channel. God forbid…this hick channel can’t attract the general population even with Elvis’ story as well as the Million Dollar Quartet? It really just shows the world the intelligence and mindset of HICK Americana! How this awesome show fails to continue is beyond me. The Silver Lining? Good riddance to the sub 80 IQ audience of CMT. What a pathetic waste of viewers this channel’s followers are. The only reason all the hick viewers… Read more »
My husband and I loved the show. He has always been an Elvis fan. Please bring it back or sell it to someone else. I big problem work with CMT that cable has it with elite more money packages. So many people I know were so disappointed when Nashville went to this station because alot of people don’t get that station. Older people did watch it also.
I agree with you Marcy. I had no idea what channel it was on. I just tell my husband what shows I would watch and he records them for me. I do hope we get the rest of the story on tv.
Disappointing
Very upsetting. Loved this show.
I feel the show should have been renewed. It was a nice lesson in the history of
rock ‘n roll.
Looking forward to Season Two, disappointed that it is not in the works. I really liked this series, as did my my wife. We watched it together every week. I don;t think it got the publicity to get the higher ratings. I hope there is a change in the decision, and that they bring it back.
I’m very disappointed. I love that show. Now it feels unfinished. I hope that they change their minds. The story needs to be told.
