Last season, Supergirl aired on CBS but the ratings weren’t strong enough for it to stay on the network. The TV show’s now moved to The CW. Will many viewers follow the superhero series? Will it be a hit in the ratings on the smaller network — even though the numbers will be much lower? Cancelled or renewed for season three? Stay tuned.
Supergirl revolves around Superman’s cousin, Kara Zor-El (Melissa Benoist). As a girl, she survived Krypton’s destruction by being sent to Earth where she was raised as a human. She kept her powers a secret and now, as an adult, works as an assistant at a big city media conglomerate. Kara’s existence becomes known to the world and she is enlisted by a super-secret agency to help protect the citizens from evil forces as Supergirl. The rest of the cast includes Mehcad Brooks, Chyler Leigh, Jeremy Jordan, David Harewood, Floriana Lima, and Chris Wood. Recurring actors this season include Calista Flockhart, Ian Gomez, Katie McGrath, Lynda Carter, Brenda Strong, and Tyler Hoechlin.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available — usually the next day, around 11:30am EST/8:30am PST. Refresh to see the latest.
1/8 update: The CW has renewed the Supergirl TV show for a third season. Details here.
5/23 update: You can see the rest of the latest night’s ratings.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated charts, please try reloading the page. You can also see them here.
For comparisons: The first season of Supergirl on CBS averaged a 1.68 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 7.68 million total viewers (Live+SD).
Note: These are the Live + Same Day Ratings which include “live” viewing plus delayed DVR viewing, up until 3am local time that same night. Ratings marked with an “*” are the fast affiliate ratings and will be updated with the Live+SD numbers when they are made available. Typically, networks get paid for C+3 ratings which includes DVR viewing within three days of the original airing when commercials are watched. Those numbers are rarely released to the press.
What do you think? Do you like the Supergirl TV series? Do you think it should be cancelled or renewed for a third season?
Serious question: When was the last time that a show lost a third of its audience during its 2nd season?
It is bad enough that it lost nearly half of its audience during season 1, but this downward spiral just gets more depressing with each drop – even by CW standards this is bad.

Shows lose a big chunk of their Live audience all the time. People are shifting to watching shows on their DVRs or online. I like the show but its not appointment TV. Few are.
This show needs to stay away from the BS Politics and in your face new wave feminist trash it weaves throughout the episodes, it’s getting tired! Ratings dip wake up CW idiots!
I think Supergirl is turning in solid numbers in one of the most challenging time slots on network TV. I’d be sunk if it weren’t for my DVR because I also watch DWTS which competes it SG’s time slot. I’m among those who appreciate both seasons of the show, and I enjoy the current blend of action and drama. I think it gives more depth to the characters and for me, that makes the show mores interesting.
Este programa me encanta! Lo vemos mucho con mi familia desde Buenos Aires Argentina, amamos a Melissa y ojalá esta serie siga adelante por más tiempo, nos hace muy felices verla 🙂
It’s really bizarre that entertainment (i.e. Movies, Television, Video Games, etc.,) seems to have veered away from “the bottom line” and instead has become an uncompromising tool for social behavioral conditioning.
Almost as if the money doesn’t even matter anymore, to someone(s). O.o
-Very bizarre, indeed.
I have to completely agree with you on this one. So many promising shows and movies have been ruined by “those in charge” forcing political issues. I’m pretty much convinced at this point that they are MADE to do this or they get turned away. I don’t mind saying someone is gay in a show, but when it feels like it is being forced on you then it ruins everything. If I want that much gay, I’ll watch something OTHER than a superhero movie. Oh yeah, I WILL NOT be watching the new Wonder Woman for the same reasons. Utter… Read more »
The problem is in real life you don’t get to pick and choose what is “too much gay.” So many times I have seen “I have nothing wrong with their being gay people but the problem is when it is forced on us.” It is tv- everything on it is a made up ideology. Every relationship you see is forced. People saying they can’t deal with gay couples being forced on them is just a way of disguising homophobia and avoiding the real issue. As for Supergirl, Alex and Maggie’s relationship was honestly very well done. It had development and… Read more »
I loved the first season of the show; however, I’ve barely watched this season’s episodes. Since they decided to make the main story line revolve around a stupid alien that dropped from the sky because of…. reasons I have lost all my interest (like one was enough, and it was the main character), and he is the main story line even though it is absurde since cadmus and other conflicts are on the background really. Seriously, the actor is super cute, could you at least try to make the character likeble instead of making him a slave owner, self rigtheous… Read more »
I’d like to see more action and crime fighting. And less soap opera drama, like her sister’s gay relationship. I’m on the verge of giving up on Supergirl because of the relationship drama that I find boring.
This relationship take 2min top per episode.I didn’t see you complaining about the straight relationship thought.homophobic much?
Um, it takes way more time than 2 min per episode. Kara and her romantic relationship gets way less time than Sanvers.
The gay relationship in the show is just a gimmick, same thing with Winn’s love story with the butt kicking alien and the Guardian.
Its not homophobic to be normal and want to watch normal tv. Like come one. You just mentioned straight. As in gay is off the normal path doing they own thing. So just relax buddy.
LOL look at those numbers. 😀
LOL, look at the numbers for the rest of the CW shows in comparison.
Can they get rid of mon El already?we are sick of him,he ruined the show.give Kara a decent storyline..this karamel **** is really boring and annoying.the guardian is really boring too.focus on the ladies.enough with this annoying whining dude
Why get rid of Monel? The dude’s hilarious! He and Winn always make me laugh. Got really great comic timing and he’s got great chem with Supergirl. Guardian is a bit out of place as he’s a vigilante now, but at least James is given something to do. He has to let go of his CEO position though if he wants to stay a vigilante, as it is very contrived as to how he’s supposedly able to juggle that when Cat can’t even give time for her son when she runs CatCo. Which ladies don’t have focus? Supergirl and her… Read more »
The show has been renewed for a season 3, making this the perfect middle finger to all the haters. It simply shows how many useless brats they are on the internet who cannot appreciate something, or at least leave it alone when they don’t like it. So please take your pained, narcissistic bottoms and go watch your macho man television, and leave us and our show alone.
tl;dr please go spread your hate elsewhere. we’re people of happiness and hope here in the supergirl fandom.
It will be cancelled soon.
Not likely, given that the CW let renewed like Jane the Virgin and Crazy ex-girlfriend, which draws 1 million viewers per episode.
Supergirl is largely irrelevant. It’s probably one of the worst tv shows on free tv right now.
The show has been steadily losing viewers since the writers are trying desperately to use the real world for inspiration, in this case a leftist point of view. It gets old and whiny, they should try, oh I don’t know, using the actual source material for inspiration? THE COMICS. Had high hopes for this show, Flash might use the same formula over and over again but it’s still the best one out of the bunch, this one moves down to last for me, followed closely by Legends then Arrow. Yawn
i was watching other CW rating and i find out all CW viewers are lower and lower ( not only Supergirl, the Flash, Lot or Arrow , but all of them) so maybe is has something to do with CW that people dont like the TV station anymore ( i don’t know, just a theory)
You could say the same thing about CBS, NBC, ABC, and Fox.
After reading the comments it seems that a lot of other people think the show is crap besides me. My suggestion is to drop the silly writers and get writers that actually wrote for the comic . The producers and writers didn’t bother to really understand SUPERGIRL because they’re busy crusading their little causes . Jimmy Olson 6 foot 3 pro tight end …really? I started reading SUPERGIRL in 1959 . All they had to do is respect the character baby boomers grew up with and ratings would have been off the charts . There is also the new school… Read more »
i think Melissa (if you are talking about her ) is the best actor they can actually have. The way she play SG is just unbelievable. I really love her as SG, i dont sometimes like like writers write the show ( for example Jimmy as Guardian) but you cant do anything with that so deal with it and if you dont like it dont watch it, writers wont adapt the show to you 😀 that is naive … And when you are talking about SG is blonde in comics, you replied yourself, writers and producents don’t do everything pursuant… Read more »
I completely agree. If you don’t like the show, don’t watch it. Simple as that.
I Watch the show mainly for the same reasons Jeb Bush watches … that being said, The PC SJW crapola has gotten OLD and ruining the show (has ruined?). And who wants to watch a show about a “Super Hero” that almost every Episode they insist on having Supergirl “Rescued” by either her Gay Sister or some other Human, because everyone knows Super Hero’s aren’t really diverse enough, so they MUST be saved by someone in the Gay Mafia. Again, since I really only watch it for Melissa Benoist …I may have to pass after this season (probably the last)… Read more »
Don’t be so lame…. You only watch it for the hotness and i reckon as long as there’s somebody taking off their clothes you’ll watch it. There’s tons of other porn shows out there for you dude.
She’s the worst actress ever, and the show is ridiculously nonsense. Is she always the winner? No way, look at the same shows.
What I’m curious about is what happens when the show drops below 2 million viewers this season?
It is clearly heading that direction and that would mean that Supergirl has lost more viewers in single season than any other CW DC show.
It has already been renewed, but CW would probably have to (again) dramatically overhaul the show.
Yeah they can cancel the show anytime.
It’s still the 2nd highest rated CW show both in 18-49 and total viewers. So it’s doing well enough for the CW.
I like the show but Why not keep it light and fun and make it a half hour like the old superman tv show then there’s no time for it to get boring and redundant don’t know about everyone in other places but I sure wish the CW shows were Broadcast in HD here in Savannah Georgia it isn’t I have dish but it’s not in HD is it the dish or the CW? Could someone let me know thanks
No surprise to me that this show was renewed. It would have been renewed with a 0.70
Please cancel the show. It’s the most brat series on TV.
Most people on this site like the series. Please refrain from being rude.
