CBS has sent another reality show packing. The Briefcase has been cancelled and won’t be returning for a second season in 2016.
On The Briefcase, two families who are struggling financially are each given a briefcase that contains $101,000. They must decide whether to keep all of the money for themselves or give some or all of it to the other family. Over the course of 72 hours, each family learns about the other family and must make their makes decision. What they don’t know is that the other family has been given a similar briefcase and the same instructions.
Debuting in May 2015, The Briefcase drew harsh reviews from many critics. Many believed that it was exploiting the financial hardships of the families and using the less-fortunate for sport. Others countered that many of the families did receive money that they wouldn’t have received otherwise.
Either way, the series did poorly in the ratings. The six episodes drew only a 1.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 5.18 million viewers. The last episode, which aired June 27th, drew a 0.7 in the demo with 4.0 million viewers.
What do you think? Did you like The Briefcase TV show? Did the positives outweight the negatives in your mind? Should it have been cancelled or renewed for a second season instead?
