The peacock network has decided to cut their season order of The Cape from 13 to 10 episodes. Production of the TV series will shut down this week, the latest sign that the show will be cancelled.
The Cape follows Vince Faraday (David Lyons), an honest cop who finds himself framed for a series of murders and presumed dead. Fueled by a desire to reunite with his family (Jennifer Ferrin, Ryan Wynott) and to battle the criminal forces that have overtaken their home city, Vince becomes “The Cape” — a vigilante and his son’s favorite comic book superhero. Others in the cast include James Frain, Keith David, Summer Glau, Dorian Missick, Martin Klebba, and Vinnie Jones.
The series has been a disappointment for NBC in the ratings and Monday’s numbers were the worst so far. The TV series debuted on January 9th with a special two-hour event that attracted a decent 2.6 in the 18-49 demographic and 8.45 million total viewers. Eight days later, episode three of The Cape dropped a huge 30% in the demo, to a 1.8 rating and 6.22 million. Episode four’s ratings fell another 11% to a 1.6 demo rating and 5.84 million viewers. Monday’s hit a new low with a 1.5 and 5.343 million.

The show currently averages a 1.9 in the demo and 6.46 million viewers. After just five episodes, it’s become one of the lowest-rated scripted series on the network, tying with Chuck.
For months, NBC has had The Event slated to return to the Mondays at 9pm timeslot on February 28th. When that happens, only eight episodes of The Cape will have aired. Word is that the network is considering delaying The Event for another week to finish off The Cape’s season. If that doesn’t happen, it seems unlikely that NBC will find a place to air the leftover pair of episodes.
It’s even more unlikely that The Cape will be renewed for a second season or end with any kind of resolution.
What do you think? Is The Cape doomed to be cancelled? What could have been done differently? Is it better than The Event?
UPDATE: NBC has delayed the return of The Event by one week. Episodes nine and 10 of The Cape are expected to air on February 28th, finishing the season.

It’s too bad the Cape had to be cancelled. But if my husband
and I had to chose, it would be to definitely keep the Event on the air.

I really liked The Cape and I don’t care much for The Event. I watched episode 10 On Demand on Cable and really enjoyed it. I was really getting into it and then you cancel it. Why is it every time there is a good show the network cancels it. I am also so over The Apprentice and wish you would take it off the air. I haven’t watched it for the last couple of years and yet it is still on. Boring!!!!!
The network needs to give this show some more time. This is one that may need a little slack to allow the network to accurately assess the audience. Strange that a family values show that appeals to all ages, is artistic and stylish, has a little magic to it, is getting canned.
I loved The Cape TV show, and apparently so do more than 95% of the people who voted.
Please keep it on- it probably couldn’t compete with The Bachelor.
bring back the cape
The problem was the unnecsssary layer of family drama and that the villains were much more entertaining than the hero . The show should have been more light hearted and less focus on the hero’s personal angst . A total waste of Summer Glau .
what the hell is worng with NBC if you remember they were gona can chuck too and now look at the show….they never give people a chance to say hey you know i can get into the story now i bet they would have killed batman….well if they pull it i know iwill be not watching any more of there numbers ****…….two and a half men and now the cape….what next
please leave the good shows alone the cape is so much fun to watch the event cant follow it!
The Cape was my favorite series next to Off the Map. I am so upset to hear it”s canceled. This made mondays something I looked forward to. I hope the network will reconsider canceling THE CAPE.
I thought that the cape was a great show. I watched the whole monday night line up, Chuck, The cape and harrys law. you had me hooked. I’m not a great fan of the Event. sorry guys, from my point of view dropping the cape wasn’t a good decision. but what do I know.
I Soooooo LOVE The Cape!!! it really is a great family show. We really don’t need another reality show or something that i have to ask my children to excuse theirselves from because the scenes are to risky. If i want to watch something sexy then I will add it to my cable package.
THIS IS STUPID! I WANT THE CAPE! This is one of the only shows my brother and I could agree on and thats saying something! They can’t cancel! It’s finally the show that my whole family and I can watch! atleast continue it online or something.
I think the biggest problem with this show is it doesnt look like it is leading to anything good. The guys wife is going to hook up with that lawyer he is going to hook up with the cutie they provided for him. the relationship with his son will forever be trapped in the time that he “died” the circus of crime doesn’t gel with his good guy thing. The show has some strengths but it really needed tighter writing. I wanted to like this show very much and i do love some of the characters but in the end… Read more »
I gotta agree. Interesting idea, but there were too many things that don’t “fit” quite right in this series. And there is only so long I want to see the drama between him and his wife not getting to the truth of what happened to him. Lot of good characters though… I thought they were the best part of this series.
I’m ready to get rid of THE EVENT, to hard to follow and I couldn’t get into it. I do miss THE CAPE, bring it back and give it a chance. The Cape was a great heartwarming, family show. I loved ALL the characters. Seems like it didn’t have enough time to become a hit. I’m so tired of Sitcoms.
I can’t believe THE CAPE is cancelled. I hate THE EVENT!! My favorite new shows were THE CAPE and Harry’s Law. I don’t like the Event but I also don’t care about watching tv shows that IF you don’t watch for a week, you miss a very important portion that makes the next week show “USELESS”. I also discovered that I watched nearly everything on the night NBC showed THE CAPE Then on Tuesdays & others, I searched the channels to TRY to find 1 good show. I am sick of SITCOMS!!!!!! The CAPE was so different, exciting, intense, and… Read more »
