The Class aired its last first run episode Monday night on CBS, right according to schedule. The New Adventures of Old Christine will replace it in the 8:30pm timeslot starting March 12th. Does this mean that The Class has been cancelled? No. At least, not yet.
The Class debuted on Monday, September 18, 2006 on CBS. The sitcom revolves around a group of 28-year-olds who were part of the same third grade class 20 years before. After being reunited by Ethan (Jason Ritter), the former classmates begin to get to know each other once again and become intertwined. The series also stars Lizzy Caplan, Heather Goldenhersh, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Sean Maguire, Jon Bernthal, Andrea Anders and Lucy Punch.
The series, created by the co-creator of Friends David Crane and his partner Jeffrey Klarik (Mad About You), had been the subject of a bidding war by several networks. It premiered at 8pm (a difficult slot for a new show) and attracted an under-whelming 7.6 million households. Viewership dropped for the next two weeks to an average of 6.1 million. CBS moved it to 8:30, switching places with How I Met Your Mother and the ratings haven’t really improved, averaging under six million households weekly.
The Class has gone through some challenges behind-the-scenes as well. Realizing that the main cast of eight former classmates (combined with many recurring characters) was unwieldy, the producers sought to refocus the show on the characters’ romantic relationships. As a result, they limited the recurring role appearances and wanted to make series regular Lucy Punch (reporter Holly Ellenbogen) a recurring character as well. Punch declined and subsequently left the series. She was removed from the opening credits after episode 13. Though her effeminate husband Perry (Sam Harris) has appeared, Holly’s absence hasn’t been addressed.
If you’re counting, you know that only 19 episodes of The Class have aired. Though it’s an unusual number for a TV season, that’s all there are. CBS gave the series an initial order for 13 episodes and then ordered only six more in November.
Will The Class return for a second season? CBS isn’t expected to announce its plans until the “network upfronts” in May when they announce their Fall schedule. Right now the prospects for a second season of The Class don’t look good.
Right now, CBS has a two-hour block of four sitcoms. Rules of Engagement, which debuted last month, has done extremely well holding onto Two and a Half Men’s typical 10+ million households audience. Before going on hiatus, The New Adventures of Old Christine was attracting solid numbers and is expected to do well when it returns this Monday. How I Met Your Mother is the weakest show in the group audience-wise but has consistently outperformed The Class. Right now, there’s no good reason for CBS to dump any of those other shows, which essentially leaves no room for a second season of The Class.
Is there hope? Well, if CBS decides to add some sitcoms on another night then that would create an opening in the schedule. Right now, though their schedule is overflowing with crime procedural and reality shows, they generally get great ratings. CBS could also order a second season of The Class and use them to replace Christine or Mother reruns mid-season.
On the upside, the series won the People’s Choice Award for Best New Comedy. CBS generally seems to like the show and has faith in the creative team. The final decision will likely have to do with how the rest of their new Fall schedule shapes up. Will Kat and Ethan get together? Will Ritchie marry Lina? Will Duncan and Nicole get back together? Will Kyle have more to do than pal around with Ethan? Stay tuned!
The Class, what can I say, it is a great show. I was so upset when I turned on my favorite night tv only to see that it was not airing and Old Chrissy replaced it. It is by far a better show than the old adventures. The class is a great comedy. And has not been on tv far long enough to be cancel’d or even replaced. The class is and was a good night to watch tv after a busy monday workday. Please keep it. Its keep material Signed, Help me keep it on.
The Class is the funniest show on television. The only show I watch on Monday night now is How I met your mother. Christine seems to have the same story line every week, Two and a Half Men is all about sex, and Rules of Engagement has to be the most boring show on television…I tried to get into it, but it never made me laugh, not even once. Please CBS, listen to your viewers. Bring back The Class!!
I seriously doubt the numbers saying Christine is doing so well. Everyone I talk to thinks the class is a much better show. Personally I find it hard to root for a woman that is so wrapped up in herself that she doesn’t even have time for her child unless it suits her selfish needs.
Please bring back The Class i so loved it. I even got my cousin hooked on the show she loves it to. CBS don’t be stupid bring back The Class. I can’t stand Rules of Engagement it’s so boaring.
Love the class BRING IT BACK please ;O)
I liked the Class alot. I don’t know if it’s my love for John Ritter (Jason Ritter is a spitting image of his dad!) Or what, but I like it alot. I think they should bring Sarah Gilbert back and cause some friction between her and the new girlfriend for better ratings. (BTW.. I love Sarah Gilbert too.. from Roseanne)
I want to know why The Class would not return for a second season? I am hooked on that show and I am tired of everytime I find a show worth watching it is canceled.
Thanks,
Janice
I hope they keep the Class on air, it’s pretty much the funniest new sitcom to come on in years and it has a pretty interesting storyline to go with the laughs.
This must be the season to kill all great new shows, with Studio 60 and Justice disappearing, it wouldn’t surprise me if this show disappeared to, seems to be the trend. I think networks should pay more attention to forums and blogs before cancelling stuff…..
The class is wonderful. We are tired of all the reality and crime shows. Ritchie is brilliant, we need season 2!!
Is there a petition going anywhere to fight the cancelling of the show? I don’t know where they are getting their ratings from but RULES OF ENGAGEMENT? It’s not funny, it’s annoying. David Spade’s era is over, he needs to get over it and move on. Its a cheap knock off of How I met your mother’s character Barney. The CLass is laugh out loud funny and actually entertains without having death, crime, voilence, terrorism, or drugs in it. heaven for bid tv watchers are actually entertained. CBS will yank it because they have morons testing their ratings. The Class… Read more »
DO NOT CANCEL THE CLASS – This is the funniest show on tv! Jason Ritter is brilliant and he deserves to come back. PLEASE DON’T CANCEL THIS SHOW!!
The Class has been the brightest place on TV since Friends and I think that the network is underestimating the intelligence of the viewers if they think that we can’t keep track of the cast. Remember the large cast of Friends? Seems to me that one turned out okay!! The Class and How I Met Your Mother are the ONLY sitcoms I watch and they’re the bright spot of the week. I never, ever watch game shows or so-called reality TV and I’m quite tired of the fact that it seems that they’re dominating what we’re offered. No Ethan or… Read more »
Good sitcoms have been few and far between in the last 15 years or so with the exception of friends. The Class was a breath of fresh air from all these reality shows they’re cramming down our throats. Thoas of us who couldn’t care less about”whos dancin with a star” or who wants to be an “american Idol” would like a lugh once in awhile. The Class gives us those laughs. Please CBS, give us the Class and skip the next two “CSI” shows.
I really enjoy the Class. I think there is a lot of potential in the characters. I hope that they have the opportunity to continue and see where it goes.
It’s funny and different. The recap reminds me of “Soap”. Which was a long time hit on ABC.
I don’t normally write in but wanted to try to save the show.
I looked forward every week to this show! I will be very disappointed if it doesn’t return for 2nd season. I think it is absolutely hilarious! I am shocked that CBS is even considering cancelling it. It’s the ONLY sitcom I watched!
I think the class is a great show and it deserves another season!
I think a second season will keep the current fans, and pull in more people who haven’t discovered the series yet.
