As if a network possessed, FOX renewed The Exorcist TV show, despite hellishly low broadcast ratings in its freshman outing. While the Rance family’s story has concluded — meaning Geena Davis, Alan Ruck, Hannah Kasulka, and Brianne Howey are not returning as series regulars — the horror continues for Father Tomas Ortega (Alfonso Herrera) and former priest Marcus Keane (Ben Daniels). Should fans expect further divine intervention? Will The Exorcist be cancelled or renewed for season three? Stay tuned. *Status update below.
Based on the 1973 feature film and William Peter Blatty’s 1971 novel, The Exorcist stars Herrera, Daniels, Kurt Egyiawan, Zuleikha Robinson, John Cho, Brianna Hildebrand, and Li Jun Li. Christopher Cousins and Cyrus Arnold join the FOX horror drama this year, on a recurring basis. In the second season, Father Bennett (Egyiawan) sets out to uncover evil at the Vatican, while Keane and Ortega set off to assist troubled foster children, in the Pacific Northwest.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly in the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available — usually the next day, around 11:30am EST/8:30am PST. Refresh to see the latest.
12/16 update: You can see the rest of the latest night’s ratings.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated chart, please try reloading the page or view it here.
For comparisons: The first season of The Exorcist on FOX averaged a 0.68 rating in the 18-49 year old viewer demographic and 1.914 million total viewers (live + same day).
Note: These are the Live + Same Day Ratings which include “live” viewing plus delayed DVR viewing, up until 3am local time that same night. Ratings marked with an “*” are the fast affiliate ratings and will be updated with the Live+SD numbers when they are made available. Typically, networks get paid for C+3 ratings which includes DVR viewing within three days of the original airing when commercials are watched. Those numbers are rarely released to the press.
What do you think? Do you like The Exorcist TV series? Should it be cancelled or renewed for a third season on FOX?
5/11/18 update: FOX has cancelled their low-rated TV show, The Exorcist, after two seasons. Details here.
I love the show and I really hope FOX renews it for another year. I think this season is amazing. Friday is a tough time slot and I really hope Fox considers that, as well as the fact that the Horror genre is not for everybody but the fans of the show are devoted and loyal to it. Keeping my fingers crossed!
I mean what an amazing adaptation! I’m 22 and I love the original movie. I was so impressed by the writing, the characters, and even the cinematography. Beautifully directed. It sucks that there aren’t more people viewing this. The exorcist name has a bad rap because of the corny sequels, but the original movie was not just a good horror movie but a good movie. The show stay true to that where it is not just a good horror show but a good show. I hope this thing sees at least one more season.
I wonder how they can get more people watching it. It is the best tv show at the moment, and I doubt another one will be as good as it in the near future.
I love this show. The acting and story telling are top notch. I really hope this show continues next year with the same two main actors. Awesome show!
This show is great. Such a change from the usual generic fodder available. Thank you Fox. Please renew…keep renewing…be brave and have faith! (Sorry)
Wow! EP6 was phenomenal. I think “Rose” is really stealing the show, too. She’s far better than Verity.
The loves all humanity angle can be explored, but it’s just as good as being sexually attracted to men I reckon (loving them for the soul).
Would be great though if marcus was the contradictory priest – being sexually attracted to men and women at the same time
I wanted to mention “Pazuzu and Geena Davis” below, but I like Casey also.
Also “mouse” is the best addition so far. Love Andy and Verity, but this might just be season 2 commitment only..
They really need to do an inside story into the daily lives of the exorcist.. where do the funds come from, etc, how they move on to bigger and lucrative cases. Just so much potential.
Marcus homosexual side is coming out now – could be a great move. Tomas’ 100,000 cheque from season 1, the “people dressed in black” in Chicago, Pazuzu & Casey (please come back!!) and lust for power, should be of focus in Season 3.
Casey & pazuzu were great but this second season is just as good if not better. Especially after last week’s episode. I was on the edge of my seat.
I hope another network picks up this show if it gets cancelled—fantastic quality all the way around.
I bloody hope so as well that another network would pick up the show. I would even give some money through crowdfunding just to keep the show going. I am probably The Exorcist’s biggest fan in England.
It’s an excellent show–I had my doubts about season 2. It’s gotten better and more interesting–works great as an anthology series. I thought season 2 with kids would be rote–it’s certainly not dull and even creepier than 1. Loving it!
I thought the same thing about this season at first. Then the 2nd episode I was hooked. It is truly my favorite show. I love the kids, they all play great parts. Can’t wait until tomorrow night’s episode!!!
Didn’t buy the second season on iTunes, might be cancelled.
Simply the BEST TV SHOW on TV ! Why People don’t watch it, I can’t understand !
