Bones has been a quiet hit for FOX but the same can’t be said for its spin-off, The Finder. FOX has now cancelled the low-rated series after one season.
The Finder is a procedural series that revolves around a man (Geoff Stults) with the extraordinary ability to help people find the unfindable. Other castmembers include Maddie Hasson, Mercedes Masohn, and Michael Clarke Duncan.
The spin-off debuted on January 12th to a disappointing 1.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 5.50 million total viewers. It was fourth in its Thursday night timeslot right out of the gate and lost nearly 30% of the all-important demo from its compatible lead-in, Bones. This was not a good start.

Things picked up a bit in the following weeks, thanks in large part to the show having FOX’s blockbuster American Idol as a lead-in. Still, the numbers weren’t as high as they should have been.
After seven weeks on the air, FOX put Finder on hiatus and then moved it to Friday nights, giving its Thursday timeslot to Touch. If The Finder could maintain a healthy percentage of its viewers after the switch, it would likely garner a renewal.
But that didn’t happen and Finder’s numbers dropped like a rock. In its first Friday airing, the freshman series attracted a 1.1 demo rating — an episode-to-episode loss of 53% — with just 4.03 million viewers. The numbers for future episodes fluctuated a bit but didn’t really get any more encouraging. The network could do just as well or better by running cheaper reality programming.
The season finale of The Finder is set to air this Friday night and there won’t be any episodes after that. Hopefully the producers saw the writing on the wall early enough and won’t leave viewers hanging with any major unresolved storylines.
What do you think? What went wrong with this show? Why do you think The Finder failed to attract a bigger audience? Was cancelling the series the right decision? How would you have fixed it?
Please bring back this show. It would do wonderful as a netfix series. I just found this show and want more
I agree with everyone from the past month and hope with all this buzz that someone would be smart enough to pick it back up. Hint, hint ; )
It was canceled because Michael Clarke Duncan died
Actually he died a few months later.
Netflix pick it up. I think it will do well as did Longmire. This show is very well written. I had no idea it was even on until after the fact.
We just found The Finder on Netflix and loved all the episodes. So sad it was cancelled. We found it to be very smart and entertaining. Don’t know why FOX decided not to give it a chance. Hopefully Netflix will pick it up. Heaven knows we need so quality programming these days.
Probably cancelled because it didn’t feature smoking. Big Tobacco kills everything that doesn’t feature smoking but hopes nobody ever figures that out.
You’re pretty right, but you sound as paranoid as Walter
I just found the show on netflix. This show is really good. It amazes me the types of shows that stay on air and really good ones get tossed. Now I hear that many of the shows I find entertaining are up for the chopping block. Oh I pray they will not be replaced with this LACK OF REALITY stuff.
I found this a few years ago and was very disappointed when there was only one season. Just introduced a friend a few weeks ago and she loves it and was very disappointed as well. She said it was something she could watch with her kids. The show left everything hanging. I agree with the posts below that maybe Netflix should pick it up since the network did such a poor job with it. There wasn’t any advertising for it. I would have watched it, but I didn’t always have cable and didn’t see the advertisements back then. Wouldn’t be… Read more »
I believe the show didn’t have enough publicity. Awesome cast, and the shows are enjoyable. Sad that Micheal Clark Duncan, but I believe if they could find someone else to take that spot (reminding no one could ever fill his shoes) and try again.
This is probably one of my favorite shows to bad I didn’t know about it till it was on Netflix
Michael Duncan passed away. I don’t see this coming back, even on Netflix.
This is an excellent show that Fox did nothing to promote. I loved the bones episode with them in it and thought that would make a great new show but never saw anything to tell me it was on. i found it on Netflix. so I say it was Fox that dropped the ball by not promoting it. They have almost no shows I am interested in but this one was great. The story lines where interesting and the characters have depth which made them like-able.
This was a great show. I think Netflix should pick the ball up and run with it. Network tv is turning out crap with all the reality shows. That’s why I don’t watch them anymore.
Season 2! Season 2!
Just found this series on Netlix. Never heard of it before! Bad promoting. I can’t believe they would cancel such a great show, tat the whole family can watch. First time i actually laughed, enjoyed the stories, and did not have to deal with gore, swearing or gratuitous sex. It’ s just too bad!
Also doesn’t help with the passing of Michael Clarke Duncan ;(
Yes, that’s very sad, but series have addressed such problems easily in the past. This was a good and entertaining show. I particularly like Geoff Stults in the role of Walter. Would love to see Netflix pick it up for development.
