Last May, fans of The CW’s sitcom, The Game, were upset to learn that the sitcom had been cancelled after three seasons on the air. Though there was some resolution in the last episode, it was hardly satisfying enough for devoted viewers. The web has recently been abuzz with news that the show is coming back but can you believe it?
Created by Mara Brock Akil, The Game began as a spin-off of the long-running comedy, Girlfriends. The series centers around a first year medical student (Tia Mowry) who chooses to follow her pro-football boyfriend (Pooch Hall) to San Diego. Others in the cast include Brittany Daniel, Coby Bell, Wendy Raquel Robinson, Hosea Chanchez, and Barry Floyd.
Even before the show was cancelled by the CW, there was talk about the possibility of Black Entertainment Television (BET) picking up the show for a fourth year. The cable-channel has been playing the sitcom repeats and the show fits in with their other programming.
In July, Mowry told TV Guide, “[BET chairman and CEO] Debra Lee is trying everything and anything to make this happen. The Game gets higher ratings than BET’s original programming, and we’ve heard there would be a huge marketing campaign. So I personally believe the show would be taken to another level.”

Unfortunately, there’s been little word of any real progress since then. Last week, rumors started circulating that a deal had been struck between BET and the show’s studio, CBS Television. Unfortunately, they turned out to be false.
Last night, Mowry put the rumors to rest. Via her Twitter account, she wrote, “I am so sorry to tell you this, this whole THE GAME thing getting picked up is NOT true! After talking to agents lawyers etc it is not true.” A deal may still happen but, for the moment, there isn’t one.
When or if a new deal is made, it remains to be seen how it would work. The contracts for the cast and creatives have lapsed so new ones would have to be negotiated. Because BET has less money to spend, they’d likely have to take pay cuts.
On top of that, some of those involved with the show have also moved on to other projects and may not be available. Hall is working on CBS’ new sitcom Accidentally on Purpose, Mowry has several projects in the works, and Akil is part of ABC’s new Cougar Town comedy with Courteney Cox Arquette.

I can’t believe the game was cut that show was the bomb. I don’t understand why these black shows don’t get a chance to live out in the public eye instead they cancel them for some dum reason like not enough money or the ratings. If that is the cast how did you get money for these dum name shows like my name is earl are you serious. Now that is a show you can save your money on. If you ask me if they want to make money then they will pick up the game for the fourth season.
I feel that none of the cast should be cut the show needs everyone. i absolutely love this show i watch all of the reruns and would like it to return, i dont know what the problem is bringing it back because everyone would watch it that watches bet and it definately would get more ratings than anything bet has on right now, even though the shows they have on now are fine. This is so sad that these networks like CW formally WB do not cater to their black or urban viewers. They always take black shows of the air and make way for more unreal whie shows – when they alrady have enough as is. I knew they “CW” was going to do something like this and it is sad to see it come true. I enjoyed this show for it’s short lived debute. I hope any channel can work it out to bring it back. If everyone / most can return… I would def watch it for another 3-4 years!
I’am so disappointed about the GAME being cancelled from the CW. Dosen’t suprise because black shows never last long on locasl channels because there two quick to through all these new T.V. shows on which no one watches anyway
I agree The Game is a show that I really enjoyed watching I wish BET would pick up the 4th season. if it’s not in the budget they can get rid of the other garbage like those reality shows they have on there now. other than that there is no other BLACK tv shows for us to watch. I love this series I couldnt get enough of the show when i first started to watch it. I really wish that they will make a decision and bring it back to air.
“The Game” is without a doubt one of the best sitcoms I have seen. It’s upsetting to hear that it has not been picked up. I am from a large family and all 15 of us enjoy watching the show. It has really been a treat to sit back and watch African Americans do their thing in a way that is not embarrassing. The actors are awesome, the stories are realistic, and very very entertaining. I am very disappointed that another season of The Game will not be showing and if so, without the original cast. The original characters could not possibly be replaced or removed. Each one carried its own story line that was always real. It hits home in each episode. My husband compares me to Melody and sometimes I have to agree. Seeing another person/character play out some real life issues makes you re-evaluate yourself and change. The fact that Tasha is funny as ever made it even more enjoyable to watch. Iam fucken pissed they canceled this show. I love this show. Especially derwin Jason and malik they are some cool guys who all remind me of me in some ways. Please continue this show because I love this show and it’s a good show to watch.

I finally find a TV series I can sit back and enjoy, and you guys take that from me and my daughter. I love “The Game”. Melanie’s character, was really working for my self esteem. She showed me that a real black woman, can withstand the rain, and find shelter. When she said she stands by her man, she is showing me that she stands by her chosen soul mate from God.
