To no surprise, FOX’s The Good Guys has been cancelled after one season and 20 episodes. The series stars Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as an unlikely team of Dallas detectives.
The Good Guys debuted last Spring to a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.93 million total viewers. Over the summer months, the ratings seemed to drop each week, hitting a low of a 1.0 rating and 3.42 million viewers.
Despite the poor showing, FOX kept the series on the fall schedule. On Friday nights, the numbers continued to slide. Good Guys hit a series low on October 22nd with a 0.6 rating and just 2.31 million viewers. Episodes typically ranked in last place for the demo in the timeslot. Realistically, no one has been expecting a second season renewal.
The series was shot on location in Dallas. Janis Burklund, head of the Dallas Film Commission, says that her high-ranking contact at Fox Television Studios has confirmed the show’s cancellation. The network hasn’t officially cancelled it but the production studio won’t be making any more episodes. The local area hasn’t had much luck this season. FOX’s Lone Star was cancelled after just two episodes and the episode order for NBC’s Chase has been reduced.
Of The Good Guys, Burkland said, “We liked the show. And they had a great experience here. But the ratings weren’t good. I asked if there was any shot at cable, and he said there didn’t appear to be any shot at that either, and I think it would have done well on cable. It’s not the kind of show network viewers understand — it’s too quirky. It’s one of those shows where either you get it or you don’t. Where cable viewers are more apt to go sampling and try out different stuff, network viewers are looking for more traditional shows. And it had a horrible time slot.”
The TV show’s sets are still intact at a local Dallas studio but will likely be struck in January. The final episode of Good Guys, titled “Partners,” aired on December 10th.
Update: Hanks confirmed the cancellation via his Twitter account on 12/27/10.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Good Guys has been cancelled and won’t be back for season two?

Once again, Fox cancels a good show. I looked forward to it every week. Absolutely loved it! And now they’re moving Fringe to Fridays at 9. That makes me nervous seeing how all the shows I’ve loved in the past on Fox Friday night have been cancelled
I’ll miss it. I was a fan.
I will miss Stark’s made up words the most. This news is sucktastic.
Rest In Peace, You will be greatly missed. Stupid Fox network.
I hate to see this show go. I am 55 years old , my youngest son is 16 and we wait all week to watch this show together. It’s funny, the charactors are fresh and the plots creative. And they did this with out being vulgar. This is not what I wanted for Christmas.
I am so sick about this. During my work day I work with law enforcement and what I do is not always pleasant so when I come home, the TV is ON! All of the “reality” shows on really turn me off. My life is overflowing in “reality.” I love the funny, silly, absurd with a good soundtrack! The Good Guys filled all my requirements. I am hopeful that maybe, just maybe USA will pick up The Good Guys as they always say, “Characters Welcome.” Well, Dan & Jack are characters, indeed!
I thought “Detectives Dan & Jack have turned in their badges” would make a better headline. Well, if you’re gunna fall, might as well fall spectacularly – it was never a toss-up except for very tiny hope of a second summer run. At least it went out with a bang and didn’t end on a cliffhanger. Frankly, the show was lucky to last past the summer, let alone not getting pulled. Fox definitely tried, they gave a spot on the fall schedule, and they did promote the show during football and the World Series. I agree, maybe if Matt Mix… Read more »
I HATE TO SEE THIS SHOW CANCELED. I REALLY LIKED THE CHARACTERS.
i have to agree that the cancelling of this amazing cop show is one of the most stupidest thing FOX has done. Bad ratings, PFFT… this show was beginning to build a big fan base. A better night, some more advertising during other FOX shows and this show would have done some true crime fighting busting punks. I am so sad to see this show gone… Bradley Whitford as Dan Stark was the epitome of all that is HOLY!!! Dumb move, FOX, very dumb!!!
This is a big disappointment. I believe the humor was lost on some people, but I absolutely loved the show. I watch very little TV, but I made sure I didn’t miss an episode of “The Good Guys”.
I love this show. Maybe USA could pick it up! We need shows like this. Come on guys!
This cancellation stinks….USA network need charaters……………….and who’s a bigger charater than Dan Starks?????????
I’m really disappointed. There was finally a comedy that actually really made me laugh on network TV, and now it’s cancelled. Maybe the humor was lost on too many.
funny, funny show. It will be missed at my house.
Too bad. Show was funny as hell. Football, Glee, Bones and Fringe. Nothing else to watch on FOX.
