To no surprise, FOX’s The Good Guys has been cancelled after one season and 20 episodes. The series stars Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as an unlikely team of Dallas detectives.
The Good Guys debuted last Spring to a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.93 million total viewers. Over the summer months, the ratings seemed to drop each week, hitting a low of a 1.0 rating and 3.42 million viewers.
Despite the poor showing, FOX kept the series on the fall schedule. On Friday nights, the numbers continued to slide. Good Guys hit a series low on October 22nd with a 0.6 rating and just 2.31 million viewers. Episodes typically ranked in last place for the demo in the timeslot. Realistically, no one has been expecting a second season renewal.
The series was shot on location in Dallas. Janis Burklund, head of the Dallas Film Commission, says that her high-ranking contact at Fox Television Studios has confirmed the show’s cancellation. The network hasn’t officially cancelled it but the production studio won’t be making any more episodes. The local area hasn’t had much luck this season. FOX’s Lone Star was cancelled after just two episodes and the episode order for NBC’s Chase has been reduced.
Of The Good Guys, Burkland said, “We liked the show. And they had a great experience here. But the ratings weren’t good. I asked if there was any shot at cable, and he said there didn’t appear to be any shot at that either, and I think it would have done well on cable. It’s not the kind of show network viewers understand — it’s too quirky. It’s one of those shows where either you get it or you don’t. Where cable viewers are more apt to go sampling and try out different stuff, network viewers are looking for more traditional shows. And it had a horrible time slot.”
The TV show’s sets are still intact at a local Dallas studio but will likely be struck in January. The final episode of Good Guys, titled “Partners,” aired on December 10th.
Update: Hanks confirmed the cancellation via his Twitter account on 12/27/10.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Good Guys has been cancelled and won’t be back for season two?

I hate that this show is gone. It is the first tv show I have really liked since MacGyver back when I was young. It had suspense, but still made you laugh. Most of the new cop shows are so detailed that it almost makes you stressed to watch them. Television is about entertainment, and The Good Guys was entertaining. Seems like not many people I know were even aware of it, though, and that’s a shame.
very sorry. It was very funny & very original. And Bradley Whitford was hilarious.
Fox you suck!!! I’m tired of all of reality crap and so is America. So I once again will not be setting my television to your station!
My mom and I LOVE this show. We are a cop family with a sense of humor so you better believe we found it hysterically funny! I really hope a cable channel looks into picking it up. It would go great with Psych. Same quirky undertones. Sadly it was in a horrible time slot, but she and I still watched it anyway. I’m VERY sad to see it go.
I loved it! I thought it was hilarious! Too bad..I would have kept watching..
Really good show. You just have to watch an episode or two to let it sink in. Sorry it was cancelled. ka in Ohio
Its a shame that such an entertaining program got shot in the foot without even getting a fair chance. It was doomed from the start with a poor time slot. Bradley is a comic genius and with Colin as His sidekick they rocked it. How unfortunate.
We can only hope Bradley and Colin will find their way back to the screen.
I think FOX tried to get The Good Guys cancelled before it got started good! Had a OK timeslot on Mondays during the summer, but then bumped it to Friday nights when we’re all out watching our kids in the football games. Who’s home watching TV on Fridays anyway??!?!? This was an absolutely hillarious show and I’m madder than heck that it’s gone! Hey FOX.. you cancel THIS show, but yet you still show crap like Bob’s Burgers and Family Guy?!?! Gimme a break!
So mad that is the best show ever why did they have to cancle it 🙁
Man my wife and I will miss this show!!! I HATE YOU FOX!!
I really enjoyed it and thought it was a great series. It had interesting characters and fun stories. I really enjoyed the interesting combination of personalities. I especially liked the use of out of sequence events. I thought it was clever and funny. Plus, it was cool to see some of Dallas. This is a shame!
My wife and I really enjoyed the show. Hope it makes it back somewhere.
No more Fox viewing for ME. Loved The Good Guys. The Fox honchos are REAL MORONS.
Ok, so I have my TV set to DVR, got really ticked because I need my friday night laugh. It’s gone. I am mad. I want Dan back! Put it on cable my DVR liked it too. My husband and I are very busy and always on a different schedule. This was the only show we liked to watch together. Now I have to pretend to like his history and cars. Might as well get my marriage counselor now. Bring it BACK! FOX you have a large portion of people who are over Idol and reality TV. That was a… Read more »

I HATE THE FACT THAT GOOD GUYS WERE CANCLED!!! MY HUSBAND AND I LOVE THE SHOW!!! WE HAVE BEEN CHECKING OUR TV GUIDE FOR WEEKS TRYING TO FIND OUT WHEN THE NEW SHOWS WERE GONA START PLAYING. I LOVED COLIN HANKS AND BRADLEY WHITFORD!! WE ENJOYED WATCHING THE TWO ACTORS TOGETHER. I THINK SOMEONE SHOULD TEAM THESE TWO UP TOGETHER IN ANOTHER SHOW. THEY WORK GREAT TOGETHER. I DONT THINK IT WAS THE ACTORS WITH THE PROBLEM I THINK IT WAS THE SHOW ITS SELF. THE WRITTERS SHOULD HAVE DONE A BETTER JOB. BUT THE ACTORS…… SURPERB, EXCELLENT. I HOPE… Read more »
