To no surprise, FOX’s The Good Guys has been cancelled after one season and 20 episodes. The series stars Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as an unlikely team of Dallas detectives.
The Good Guys debuted last Spring to a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.93 million total viewers. Over the summer months, the ratings seemed to drop each week, hitting a low of a 1.0 rating and 3.42 million viewers.
Despite the poor showing, FOX kept the series on the fall schedule. On Friday nights, the numbers continued to slide. Good Guys hit a series low on October 22nd with a 0.6 rating and just 2.31 million viewers. Episodes typically ranked in last place for the demo in the timeslot. Realistically, no one has been expecting a second season renewal.
The series was shot on location in Dallas. Janis Burklund, head of the Dallas Film Commission, says that her high-ranking contact at Fox Television Studios has confirmed the show’s cancellation. The network hasn’t officially cancelled it but the production studio won’t be making any more episodes. The local area hasn’t had much luck this season. FOX’s Lone Star was cancelled after just two episodes and the episode order for NBC’s Chase has been reduced.
Of The Good Guys, Burkland said, “We liked the show. And they had a great experience here. But the ratings weren’t good. I asked if there was any shot at cable, and he said there didn’t appear to be any shot at that either, and I think it would have done well on cable. It’s not the kind of show network viewers understand — it’s too quirky. It’s one of those shows where either you get it or you don’t. Where cable viewers are more apt to go sampling and try out different stuff, network viewers are looking for more traditional shows. And it had a horrible time slot.”
The TV show’s sets are still intact at a local Dallas studio but will likely be struck in January. The final episode of Good Guys, titled “Partners,” aired on December 10th.
Update: Hanks confirmed the cancellation via his Twitter account on 12/27/10.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Good Guys has been cancelled and won’t be back for season two?

I think it sucks ! I love that show .. You just have to get to know it and not go by 1st 2-4 episodes
Awww man! This was the first show in years that I would not miss no matter what! I am so disappointed…what a HUGE bummer.
Stargate universe was a way better show and it got cancelled as well.
The show sucked. Knew it wouldn’t last. To hokey
We are soooooo disappointed that the Good Guys has been canceled. It is a GREAT show – just the right mix of detective work, quirky humor, and a variety of relationships. My boyfriend and I really enjoy watching it – it’s a fun show – we laugh out loud almost during the entire episode.
Please bring the Good Guys back – on cable would be great – seems like a good fit for USA Network.
My wife and I enjoyed the Good Guys each Friday. Finally something with a good sense of humor, good acting. There are far too many serious cop shows on TV. Dan Stark was someone we could all identify with and laugh at simultaneously. I had a smile on my face for the entire show. Of course the plots were thin, but that was part of the charm. We all knew what was going to happen, and yet it did not detract from the fun. Please bring them back. Try a new time and day.
I loved The Good Guys! I am sad that I watched on Hulu instead of on tv, but like he said, it had a horrible time slot. If it comes out on DVD, I’ll definitely buy, this show consistently made my week, not to mention that the music choices were awesome. Doobie Brothers and AC/DC? Heck yes.
It figures. First show in about 20 years that actually annoyed me to miss.
Well, back to the vast wasteland…at least we have 132, 427 CSI/CSI clones (including variants on Fox) to choose from.
How could this happen. This was my absolute favorite show on T.V, and there just going to cancel it? I eve downloaded every episode onto my iPad, because i loved to watch each episode over and over, it never really gets old. Fox, you made a huge mistake here, and only a single season? This show should have been an Emmy winner. Fantastic soundtrack, great actors, amazing action scenes, i will tell you, i will truly miss it all.
The networks are too concerned with the ratings and cancel shows before they have a chance. Maybe there should have been more nudity, violence, and BLEEPS. Decent, family-oriented, humor–those concepts seem to be thrown by the wayside. Shame on you FOX!!!!
My wife and I loved this show! We tell our friends about it all the time. We watch reruns from our DVR often. We are so disappointed. We want season 2. Whether they come back to fox or not I don’t care. But I definitely want to see the ‘stache come back for a second season. I laughed often. Now I’ll remain disappointed.
One of the most fun shows on TV in a long time. It will be missed.
I shall miss the show but I understand – it’s business. I hope it comes to DVD nonetheless but that’s another highly doubtful business move, too. Matt Nix and cast and crew: thanks for a fun 20 hours of television!
“The Good Guys” is, or maybe I should say “was”, one of my favorite shows on TV. Perhaps if the show centered around some singing teenagers then FOX would have spared it. Terrible, terrible news…
I LOVE this show. Of course every show that I like gets cancelled. Why does every successful show have to be the same show with a different name? We get more and more channels of junk and no unique shows. Hopefully shows like Burn Notice, Human Target and Psych will survive. It seems like everything else is CSI: Somwhere or a copy of it.
