To no surprise, FOX’s The Good Guys has been cancelled after one season and 20 episodes. The series stars Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as an unlikely team of Dallas detectives.
The Good Guys debuted last Spring to a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.93 million total viewers. Over the summer months, the ratings seemed to drop each week, hitting a low of a 1.0 rating and 3.42 million viewers.
Despite the poor showing, FOX kept the series on the fall schedule. On Friday nights, the numbers continued to slide. Good Guys hit a series low on October 22nd with a 0.6 rating and just 2.31 million viewers. Episodes typically ranked in last place for the demo in the timeslot. Realistically, no one has been expecting a second season renewal.
The series was shot on location in Dallas. Janis Burklund, head of the Dallas Film Commission, says that her high-ranking contact at Fox Television Studios has confirmed the show’s cancellation. The network hasn’t officially cancelled it but the production studio won’t be making any more episodes. The local area hasn’t had much luck this season. FOX’s Lone Star was cancelled after just two episodes and the episode order for NBC’s Chase has been reduced.
Of The Good Guys, Burkland said, “We liked the show. And they had a great experience here. But the ratings weren’t good. I asked if there was any shot at cable, and he said there didn’t appear to be any shot at that either, and I think it would have done well on cable. It’s not the kind of show network viewers understand — it’s too quirky. It’s one of those shows where either you get it or you don’t. Where cable viewers are more apt to go sampling and try out different stuff, network viewers are looking for more traditional shows. And it had a horrible time slot.”
The TV show’s sets are still intact at a local Dallas studio but will likely be struck in January. The final episode of Good Guys, titled “Partners,” aired on December 10th.
Update: Hanks confirmed the cancellation via his Twitter account on 12/27/10.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Good Guys has been cancelled and won’t be back for season two?

It was a great show! Dan Stark is the man!!!
The Good Guys is one of the best shows on TV. It’s everything a TV show is supposed to be: funny; entertaining; and the actors work great off of each other. And, the writing is the perfect mixture of fast-paced action and intelligently funny dialogue and one-liners. Fox is doing itself a disservice by cancelling this show. The crime was the time slot, not the show.
That really sucks. I looked forward to watching that on Fridays. I love the slap stick humor the comedy had to offer. I hope someone else can pick up the series. It wasn’t even given a chance! Please vote to keep it on the air.
It smells crimey to me! Bradley Whitfield was the epitome of the 60-70’s…I could almost hear the “Shaft” music in the background. I never missed it! The writing was hysterical…absolutely laugh out loud stuff. My 18 yr old daughter never failed to ask me what was the matter with me when I was watching this show, because I’d be laughing so hard. I think I dated everyone of the personalities Whitfield brought to Dan Starks character. Just amazing. Please someone…find a home for this show!
Why did this show have to be cancelled? It was hysterical!! BRING IT BACK!!!!
That show was so hilarious. I hope they at least put the first season on DVD.
I loved it…Having moved to the Greater Fort Worth/Dallas Metroplex I loved the parity of the Dallas Police Department.
This was one of the most unique shows on tv…..what a shame to hear that it wasnt picked back up……crimey if you will.
SOMEONE PICK THE SHOW BACK UP!!!!!!
What a shame! I absolutely LOVED this show! I’m getting so tired of shows getting cancelled before they really even get a chance! This show was unique and NOT boring! I’ll truly miss the laughs. The cast of this show is absolutely top notch! BOO on those who cancelled it!!!!
I am really sorry to see this show go…please put it back (on cable if necessary).
Good Guys – Good Bye ! Can,t believe it !
Best show on tv and will be sadly missed by me and family .
Wish Dan Stark could stop this crime .
I loved this show. It’s a shame that “smart” shows tend not to do well. I think if they had a shot at a second season it could have caught on. I’m not a huge TV watcher but I took the time to watch this show and looked forward to it, as I do House. Smart shows….glad at least House continues.
We really enjoyed this show and are very sorry to see it has been canceled. We hope its stars find other shows to showcase their many talents.
