To no surprise, FOX’s The Good Guys has been cancelled after one season and 20 episodes. The series stars Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as an unlikely team of Dallas detectives.
The Good Guys debuted last Spring to a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.93 million total viewers. Over the summer months, the ratings seemed to drop each week, hitting a low of a 1.0 rating and 3.42 million viewers.
Despite the poor showing, FOX kept the series on the fall schedule. On Friday nights, the numbers continued to slide. Good Guys hit a series low on October 22nd with a 0.6 rating and just 2.31 million viewers. Episodes typically ranked in last place for the demo in the timeslot. Realistically, no one has been expecting a second season renewal.
The series was shot on location in Dallas. Janis Burklund, head of the Dallas Film Commission, says that her high-ranking contact at Fox Television Studios has confirmed the show’s cancellation. The network hasn’t officially cancelled it but the production studio won’t be making any more episodes. The local area hasn’t had much luck this season. FOX’s Lone Star was cancelled after just two episodes and the episode order for NBC’s Chase has been reduced.
Of The Good Guys, Burkland said, “We liked the show. And they had a great experience here. But the ratings weren’t good. I asked if there was any shot at cable, and he said there didn’t appear to be any shot at that either, and I think it would have done well on cable. It’s not the kind of show network viewers understand — it’s too quirky. It’s one of those shows where either you get it or you don’t. Where cable viewers are more apt to go sampling and try out different stuff, network viewers are looking for more traditional shows. And it had a horrible time slot.”
The TV show’s sets are still intact at a local Dallas studio but will likely be struck in January. The final episode of Good Guys, titled “Partners,” aired on December 10th.
Update: Hanks confirmed the cancellation via his Twitter account on 12/27/10.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Good Guys has been cancelled and won’t be back for season two?

this show is pure genius its a damn shame the fools decided to cancel it. We love it in zambia
I am sooooo peeved that FOX canceled this show!! THEY NEED TO BRING IT BACK! I had to DVR the program because I would laugh so hard during it, that I had to stop and restart it after I quit laughing. I am once again disappointed in FOX’s decisions. It seems like if they get a good show it is doomed to be canceled for no other reason than it is a good show! WHAT IS THE LOGIC/REASONING BEHIND THIS???? Pretty much thinking that I am no longer going to watch Fox. They are only going to get me hooked… Read more »
I am definitely disappointed in Fox for pulling this show. My family really enjoyed it while it was on. We don’t understand why the truly funny shows are pulled and the mind numbing are left on. This is not just a FOX problem, it’s the entire media system. The Good Guys was truly funny and entertaining. We loved Dan Stark and Jack.
watched it on netflix and i was hooked after episode one….i tried to look it up on the internet and sadly saw it was cancelled…bring back the good guys!!!
I discovered this show on netflix. It is pure genius the writer and the director hit the nail on the head. It really shows the highlights of dallas, and I love the fact that even though it is a crime show there is no killing or blood or any gore. Its just good clean crime humor at its best and I LOVED the show. Bring back the good guys!!! ( and liz is really hot )
I am so sad this show was canceled! I loved it and thought it was hilarious! I looked it up today to see when it was going to be on again, only to see it was canceled. Too bad, it really was a fun show.
This was such a funny show. The opening was catchy, the two main characters played off each other very well. It was a show the whole family could watch and laugh. Fox deemed it to fail by airing in the wrong spot. In spite of Fox, it was original with a flavor of the yippie and the serious (maybe) of the current job entry employee. What a show! I really miss it and watch reruns (something I don’t do with most shows.)
I can’t believe this show was cancelled, it has everything you would want! To make it even better there is no baby killers or rape scenes that seem to draw up ratings for CSI-type shows. The writer/director took two of the most opposite people and turned it into pure genius. We laugh every episode. I am so glad Netflix has the first season, but we want more!!!!
Like others who’ve posted….We discovered this series on Netflix. WE LOVE IT! Couldn’t wait for it to start up again-looked on line and CANCELLED!!?! Come on, lots of great shows had slow starts. Did Fox eventry different time slots or nights, better promo…something?
I am continually disappointed in the choices that Fox makes in its programming. I wish Fox would sell the rights to another network that has a less adolescent audience. The Good Guys was clean humor that could be enjoyed with the whole family, not a G rating but certainly a PG rating. There just isn’t enough good; clean comedy on TV today.
The cancellation of this show, which incidentally I only discovered this summer on Netflix streaming, speaks to all that I have come to expect from idiot network programmers and execs, and is a huge reason the big networks are losing the battle to the cable industry, and their smaller, but less Nielsen-oriented attitudes. The Networks have been feeding us the same-old formulaic and boring pablum for decades. That is one reason I don’t discover the really “good stuff”, such as The Good Guys, sooner, or sometimes at all. Outside of sports I just don’t watch network garbage; Especially Fox, with… Read more »
Seriously, how could people not get this show. Pulling a show like this off and leaving on the crap that is on the network stations is why I have canceled cable and only use Netflix. This show was hilarious.
Fox needs to bring this show back I only started watching it thanx to net flix and I was hoojed after the 1st episode sadly I just found out it was canceled defenetly a great show with great writters
Me too! Was hysterical!
I agree as well, I thought is was extremely funny and was something I looked forward to watching once I found it on Netflixs
Detective Dan Stark is my f-in hero! I’m going to change my name in honor of this fallen series!
This was a really good, original show. Disappointed to see this cancelled with all the other network garbage that’s out there. Good call FOX. Thought you were better than this.
