To no surprise, FOX’s The Good Guys has been cancelled after one season and 20 episodes. The series stars Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as an unlikely team of Dallas detectives.
The Good Guys debuted last Spring to a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.93 million total viewers. Over the summer months, the ratings seemed to drop each week, hitting a low of a 1.0 rating and 3.42 million viewers.
Despite the poor showing, FOX kept the series on the fall schedule. On Friday nights, the numbers continued to slide. Good Guys hit a series low on October 22nd with a 0.6 rating and just 2.31 million viewers. Episodes typically ranked in last place for the demo in the timeslot. Realistically, no one has been expecting a second season renewal.
The series was shot on location in Dallas. Janis Burklund, head of the Dallas Film Commission, says that her high-ranking contact at Fox Television Studios has confirmed the show’s cancellation. The network hasn’t officially cancelled it but the production studio won’t be making any more episodes. The local area hasn’t had much luck this season. FOX’s Lone Star was cancelled after just two episodes and the episode order for NBC’s Chase has been reduced.
Of The Good Guys, Burkland said, “We liked the show. And they had a great experience here. But the ratings weren’t good. I asked if there was any shot at cable, and he said there didn’t appear to be any shot at that either, and I think it would have done well on cable. It’s not the kind of show network viewers understand — it’s too quirky. It’s one of those shows where either you get it or you don’t. Where cable viewers are more apt to go sampling and try out different stuff, network viewers are looking for more traditional shows. And it had a horrible time slot.”
The TV show’s sets are still intact at a local Dallas studio but will likely be struck in January. The final episode of Good Guys, titled “Partners,” aired on December 10th.
Update: Hanks confirmed the cancellation via his Twitter account on 12/27/10.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Good Guys has been cancelled and won’t be back for season two?

Just found Good Guys on NetFlix–who watches real TV anymore? Too bad there isn’t going to be another season–Awesome, original characters and stories–truly enjoyed it. I guess Netflix licensing isn’t enough $$ for Fox studios (or 3-4 million weekly viewers). Shame.
This shows how real world is, it doesn’t matter the quality, only the quantity… i bet that all the people that saw the show and got that little spark to be a cop (police officer/detective) would like to see season 2, and 3, and 4, 5 , 6, then in season 7 when they finally got to homicide dept. it could end, or not… 😀
Please make season 2, and 3, and 4 and alot of them!
DAN STARK
Unfortunate, this was a well written show with an engaging premise. Lots of unfinished business to make a Season 2. Suggest is was no promoted well as I did not even know about it till I ran across it on Netflix. Loved it.
Just started watching this on Netflix and finished all the episodes in a week. This show Is hilarious and original, I’m disappointed they chose not to do a second season. I wish great shows like this could survive but I guess all anyone cares about anymore is trashy reality shows and predictable simple plots. It’s a shame. Stark and Bailey where a great dynamic duo similar to starsky and hutch. Please bring this back fox!!
I had tried to DVR the episodes when new, but for some reason it never worked. Just found them on Netflix, and it is hilarious!! Too bad they cancelled it.
Good guys was a great show and i enjoyed watching it. It was extremely funny and i am disappointed that it got cancelled. I think that if the time slot of the show was better and there was a larger audience, it wouldn’t have flopped so badly
I enjoyed the good guys this is a horable thing to cancel the show when it was just getting rel good whats up?
one of my favorite shows, det dan stark was my boy
this is not cool I honestly laugh every time I
wach a episode. sad
This show was so great it was haularious I can’t believe that their canceling it. They cancel so many great shows it just sucks. They need to think just because a show doesn’t have 10 million viewers don’t always mean that people don’t like it. Maybe it was the networks poor advertisement of it or maybe they should have switched it to a different night. I really Hope that they change their mind and bring it back. The characters were truly allsome and very funny. I’m just sad that more people won’t get the chance to watch this show. Well… Read more »
I am SO sick of truly good, funny shows being canceled! This show was fantastic.
Most of America seems to routinely follow the terrible “formula” shows that ABC,NBC and CBS put out. These are the same people that got “Arrested Developement” canceled. I’m looking forward to seeing Hanks on Dexter…but I hope He knows, and Bradley, they have viewers that were big fans.
Such a great show. My mom didn’t get it but I loved it. So cool how going down the wrong road always brought them back to the right place at the right time..and Bradley was hilarious! Gonna miss that character
We just discovered The Good Guys on Roku and are very disapointed that there is only 20 episodes. It is a great show and it’s a shame that it never found an audience.
I loved it – especially the quirkiness. It was good to have some humor along with having a clever plot, Please being it back.
Great show wish it wasnt cancelled just heard about it and started watching it on netflix recently.
I can’t believe this show didn’t get the chance some other shows get. It was greater than the Friday nights it was given. If it goes to another network I would definitely watch it. I think fox only cares about tween pop idol shows anymore.
