TNT has been cleaning house in recent months — cancelling shows like Perception, Dallas, and Franklin & Bash. Will new series The Librarians be cancelled as well or, will it be renewed for a second season?
On The Librarians, Flynn Carsen (Noah Wyle) welcomes four new people to the library organization, to help solve ancient mysteries and recover/protect historical artifacts. Together, they fight against supernatural threats — including the mysterious and immortal Dulaque (Matt Frewer) and the Serpent Brotherhood. The show stars Rebecca Romijn, Christian Kane, Lindy Booth, John Kim, and John Larroquette. Wyle, Jane Curtin, and Bob Newhart recur in their roles from the movies.
The TNT series debuted in early December with a pair of episodes that drew a 1.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 5.35 million viewers. That was a solid premiere for a basic cable series.
Unfortunately, the second week’s installment fell more than 35%, to a 0.8 demo rating and 3.37 million. The ratings have gone up and down in the later weeks but haven’t edged higher than a 1.0 in the demo and 4.1 million. Last night marked the season finale.
Though the ratings fell quite a bit after the premiere, The Librarians still performed well for TNT. It’s pretty much matched Rizolli & Isles’ demo numbers and is one of the cable channel’s most-watched programs. Though the cable channel supposedly wants to focus on very edgy material, it looks like a safe bet that The Librarians will be renewed for a second season.
Executive producer Dean Devlin certainly wants to continue with the show and told EW, “The world of The Library is a world I want to live in for the rest of my life. The more we can expand that universe and take it into surprising areas… we want to just see how far we can keep pushing the limits of where the show can go. Hopefully we’ll hear soon about a pick up soon and get back to work. We’re all chomping at the bit to get back into the world of The Library.”
Via Instagram he later said, “I want to thank each and every one of you who tuned in for your support this season. As soon as we hear any news regarding Season 2 of The Librarians you’ll be the first to know!”
But, what do you think? Do you like The Librarians TV show? Should it be cancelled or renewed for a second season?
2/12 update: TNT has renewed The Librarians for a second season. Details here.
I adore this show! The characters have developed so well. I love everything about it!
Great family show. KEEP IT! About time for a true family show!
I would like to see The Librarians stay on the air. It’s a great show and something I look forward to watching.
I whole-heartedly agree with Devlin’s comment, feeling that there are a lot of unexplored corners of the world of magic that could & should be unearthed. Regarding the manner as to whether it’s “edgy” enough or not, is up to the viewer. With this show, viewers can “escape” into an entirely different world than their own, help them to leave their everyday lives behind, if just for a small time-frame. To see it canceled so early, would be such a shame.
Keep it!!! I love the show… its not very often that a show like this comes along and i loved the movies as well
I would LOVE it if you kept The Librarians going, I have a 16 yr old son that actually gets excited about watching the show, the one thing that I find special about this show is not only does it draw you in, but it uses actual historical facts that if you have kids and they are watching this with their parents like mine does, they are learning things without realizing it. My son has gone 2 / 3 days after watching mentioning things that were part of that weeks episode not only that but he will comment something to… Read more »
