TV show description:      
This dramatic series is based on the 1993 novel of the same name which was written by John le Carré. The screenplay was adapted by David Farr. It’s a story of modern criminality which sees a former British soldier recruited by an intelligence operative to infiltrate the inner circle of an arms dealer.

We first meet former soldier Jonathan Pine (Tom Hiddleston) in 2011 amid the chaos of the Arab Spring. He works his way through the rioting crowds to arrive at Cairo’s luxurious Nefertiti Hotel where he works as the night manager.

While trying to help frantic tourists, Pine is approached by Sophie Alekan (Aure Atika), the mistress of the hotel’s owner, Freddie Hamid. She shares files with Pine showing an arms deal taking place between Hamid and a man named Richard Roper (Hugh Laurie) — an arms dealer nicknamed “the worst man in the world”..

Fearing the potentially catastrophic repercussions of the deal, Pine leaks the files to the British Government. The documents land on the desk of operative Angela Burr (Olivia Colman), a member of the British Secret Intelligence Service in London. She has a long-standing vendetta against the elusive Roper. When Roper is tipped off about the leak, Sophie is put in extreme danger.

Five years later, we find Pine working at the Meisters Hotel in Zermatt, Switzerland. Roper and his entourage (Elizabeth Debicki and Tom Hollander) frequent the establishment.

Pine is haunted by what happened in Cairo so he contacts Burr and a fragile and complex partnership is formed.
