This evening, ABC aired the season finale of The River. What’s next? Will the TV show return for a second season or will it be cancelled instead?
For those who aren’t familiar with the ABC series, The River follows the search for beloved TV host and explorer (Bruce Greenwood) some six months after he and his team went missing down the Amazon. His wife, son, their crew and a documentary team go after them on what turns out to be a dangerous rescue mission. The cast includes Joe Anderson, Leslie Hope, Eloise Mumford, Paul Blackthorne, Thomas Kretschmann, Daniel Zacapa, Shaun Parkes, and Paulina Gaitan.
Sadly, it’s almost certain that The River will be cancelled. The thriller series debuted back in the February with a pair of episodes. The first hour attracted a 2.6 in the coveted 18-49 demographic with 8.35 million total viewers. By the second hour, 12% of the audience had bailed and the numbers dropped to a 2.3 rating with 6.83 million.
The ratings have been dropping ever since. Last week’s episode drew just a 1.3 rating in the demo with 4.09 million total viewers. Averaging a 1.67 demo and 4.82 million, The River is the lowest-rated drama on the network and has fallen even lower than sure-to-be-cancelled Pan Am. On our network report card, which compares ABC TV show demo ratings, The River gets a “D.”
With ratings like these, there’s just no chance that the alphabet network will order any more installments.
What do you think? Do you think The River should be cancelled? Are you satisfied with the way the story was left? How would you have ended it?

i thoroughly enjoyed the first season and seriously hope a second season is better marketed and aired. There is so many avenues to eplore when it comes to the uneplained world of paranormal. ecellent show
I hope it’s not cancelled but it’s looking pretty grim. Especially when one of the cast members has been cast in another tv show. I like the show it’s something different but the ratings are not the greatest so I guess we’ll wait and see.
my favorite show, hope it comes back
I think The River should be renewed. It’s different and way more interesting then all the other television show’s that are aired. I personaly think the ratings are low because no one knows about the show, but if people get to know what The River was about they might like it.
I honestly think the River should continue with a second season. Many people have now heard that the series are really good and give a good scare. I know now that the season as ended that people actually want to see the series now and see what is happening in the Amazon. I don’t really watch too much tv, but what I do watch is Desperate Housewives. And I also watched Pan Am which is such a good show as well. I can’t believe this show is being canceled, and to hear that The River which is the total opposite… Read more »
what ever you do please do not leave the ending the way it is please let it go on. it needs 2 you cant stop it just like that, what are you thinking. that is just not right. i don’t care what or who was seeing it on TV i love it and like it and it needs 2 stay on you can not just leave it that way its not fair to them who do want to see it or want to keep up on it. so please , please , please, make a 2en season please.,you know there… Read more »
i dont think that the river should be canceled. I am actually very disappointed that I only got to see one season. I do not watch tv that often and when I do find shows I enjoy. This show kept me on the edge of my seat everytime and I couldnt wait for the next week to come along so I could see another episode. With this said I hope they continue more episodes in the future
NO! they can’t cancel it, regardless of how many total viewers the show reeled in. Only a spacific audience, the horror; exhilarating; adrenaline; thriller type of audience, watched the show. If this show was cancelled then that entire group of people would have nothing to watch. There is not another show on all of television that is better than this and in its category. Also, people like me would stop watching ABC and almost all of tv together if The River was cancelled. The ratings would rise significantly in a season 2 if you had a new storyline about how… Read more »
I hate horror/adrenaline/thriller type stuff, but I still liked The River because I liked watching the actors do their thing and get into these strange situations. Plus, Paul Blackthorne’s wonderful. Unfortunately, it isn’t looking good for any more episodes, let alone another season.
The River is by far one of the best new shows on TV! To many people would rather watch another reality tv showed based on problematic people like the Jersey Shore. Open your mind to imagination! Screw Reality TV, people you have enough problems on there own. Why watch what you see in real life daily (Drunks, Drugs, scandals, ect). Don’t you get enough of that in daily life? Explore the unknown and use the imagination you lost as a kid, and have forgotten about because reality TV demands to set the standard in how we live, and think. I… Read more »

CANCELLED??? Are you F******* kidding me?? It is the best thing on TV now a days. If it is cancelled I will never watch another thing on ABC. It was the quickest running hour tv show. My husband and I couldn’t wait for Tuesday’s. Oh please tell me its not cancelled. The last episode left me hanging and wanting more.
This show is unreal. Another season will bring the ratings I guarantee it
The River has so much more potential that it Deserves at Least 2 more seasons! I am a Big Fan of Oren Peli and his style of horror (Paranormal Activity) and i just think it would’ve done better on another network. Hopefully it gets picked up but if not, it had a good run and it was one of my favorite shows since LOST.
