This evening, ABC aired the season finale of The River. What’s next? Will the TV show return for a second season or will it be cancelled instead?
For those who aren’t familiar with the ABC series, The River follows the search for beloved TV host and explorer (Bruce Greenwood) some six months after he and his team went missing down the Amazon. His wife, son, their crew and a documentary team go after them on what turns out to be a dangerous rescue mission. The cast includes Joe Anderson, Leslie Hope, Eloise Mumford, Paul Blackthorne, Thomas Kretschmann, Daniel Zacapa, Shaun Parkes, and Paulina Gaitan.
Sadly, it’s almost certain that The River will be cancelled. The thriller series debuted back in the February with a pair of episodes. The first hour attracted a 2.6 in the coveted 18-49 demographic with 8.35 million total viewers. By the second hour, 12% of the audience had bailed and the numbers dropped to a 2.3 rating with 6.83 million.
The ratings have been dropping ever since. Last week’s episode drew just a 1.3 rating in the demo with 4.09 million total viewers. Averaging a 1.67 demo and 4.82 million, The River is the lowest-rated drama on the network and has fallen even lower than sure-to-be-cancelled Pan Am. On our network report card, which compares ABC TV show demo ratings, The River gets a “D.”
With ratings like these, there’s just no chance that the alphabet network will order any more installments.

Yes, Abc needs to bring this back at least for us fans that really enjoy The River, there is always a mind bending mystery and i love it. I say bring a second season.
I love this show. I would look forward to coming back home, I wanted the day to end early so that it would finally be the evening and I can watch the river!!! I love this show!! Plz do not cancel it!!!
I loved this show and I rarely watch tv drama shows like this. In the last 20 years I have only watched about 4-5 shows on a regular basis. The River is just the kind of show I like. Please bring it back ABC.
The River is a GREAT show that is full of suspense and mystery. Great thriller!! Why would anyone decide to cancel this show? Please deliver us Season 2!!!!!!!
My son & I loved this show. After watching it each week, we couldn’t wait for the next one to air! It would be such a shame for it to come to a end. This is the first show that left you wondering & waiting with ?’s since “Lost”. Everything on tv is reality, it was great to finally have a real tv show. Please don’t cancel it! The River is by far one of the best shows I have ever watched.
I anticipated it coming on every week and if I missed an episode I would watch it on-line.
I can’t imagine why this would not be a hit. It certainlyhas my vote. Please give it a chance for season 2. I think the network would be surprised.
We loved it every week,and Jim never gets into any shows but he definitely watch this and Tera Nova its saying it may be canceled too. Sad I don’t like comedy and most everything seems to be going that way or talk shows, if it does I’ll quit watching tv. I like movies like these two I couldn’t wait to see them. PLEASE DON’T TAKE THEM OFF.
Bring it back!!!!!!! Give it one more shot. The finale was amazing when the Amazon was changing around them not letting them out. I want to see what is going to happen!!!!
This is madneing! I have been waiting to find out when season 2 will air and now I find out probley not. Don’t get people interested if you are just going to leave us hanging forever.
Why do you always cancel the shows that people like and watch? Why do you keep dumb shows that make me turn the channel like Bachelor, Bachelorette, APT 23(Stupid unoriginal show by the way). I don’t know anyone that watches that junk. You need to fire whoever it is making the final decision on what shows you keep.
