It’s hard to imagine that The Simpsons will ever be cancelled. Despite a decline in the ratings last season, it remained one of FOX’s top-rated shows. Will the numbers go up this year or continue to sag? We’ll see.
On The Simpsons, the yellow family that never gets older continues to wreak their own kind of havoc on the strange town of Springfield. The voice cast includes Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, Yeardley Smith, Hank Azaria, and Harry Shearer.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available — typically the following morning, around 11:30am EST/8:30am PST. Refresh to see the latest.
5/4 update: The series has been officially renewed through season 28. Details here.
Final season averages: 2.15 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.82 million total viewers.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated chart, please try reloading the page or view it here.
Last year comparison: The 25th season of The Simpsons averaged a 2.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 5.02 million total viewers.
Note: These are the final national numbers (unless noted with an “*”). These are different from the fast affiliate numbers which are just estimates of the actual ratings. The final nationals are typically released within 24 hours of the programming or, in the case of weekends and holidays, a couple days later.
What do you think? Do you still like The Simpsons TV series? Do you think it should ever be cancelled?
The Simpsons is a shell of it’s former self.
It used to be my favorite show on television, BY FAR. but it’s just not funny anymore. It started going down hill after season 8, and its present form resembles nothing of it’s wit and charm of the early years.
How many Simpsons quotes do you know from the first 8 seasons? I can’t get through the day without using one. I don’t think I can remember a single line from the last 17 seasons.
Shearer’s characters should not be re-cast.
I picked the show up again for the first time since the 90’s and I must say that I still love it. I only stopped watching because life took me elseware, I wasn’t even aware it was still running! I don’t want the show to end but I would be interested in a spinoff that showcased the family growing up naturally. I have always loved the episodes where they look into the future. It doesn’t even come off as sloppy writing when things don’t add up, like when Nelsons father came back after years of being gone and a few… Read more »
Love the simpsons. It premiered my senior year in high school. They feel sort of like family to me. I think it is time, however, to bow out gracefully. The series has not been very good in many, many years. Sorry to have to say this.
The question of the end of The Simpsons attracts highly opinionated answers. The show showed a significant shift in style in the 8th season, but it wasn’t until the 11th season that it went on the decline into the style it currently has. This could be the reason people have become dissatisfied with the show, but it isn’t a good reason for it to end. The reason it should end should be focused on the voice actors, I am not saying that they should end the show because they are getting on in years. I am saying that the show… Read more »
Al Jean is most of the problem. The show started downward with him as the show runner. That position needs to be replaced ever three or four years for fresh blood. Simpsons has potential still but it’s mired by the “samethink” that won’t go away.
One of the co-developers of “The Simpsons”, Sam Simon, passed away a couple weeks ago from colorectal caner. (1955-2015)
I honestly think its time for it to go. Its been on since I was a kid and I very rarely watch it myself anymore. I think 26 years is long enough. Its obvious to me that the ratings are down because a lot people are finally losing interest in this show after so many years and no doubt feel the same way I do most likely. When I think about it cancelling finally however, I feel that’s going to be one hell of a finale when you really stop to think about it. Makes you wonder how long the… Read more »
Are you honestly saying a 2.8 rating for a show that is 26 years old is bad. Most new show can’t even get close to that. Bobs burgers is 5 years old yet yet it only averages a 1.4 rating (half the ratings of the simpsons)
No I’m saying that after being on this long, people are going to eventually lose interest and it looks like that’s actually starting to happen. you know what they say, all good things must come to an end sooner or later.
I think it would be morally wrong to end The Simpsons. It’s still a really good show. Sure it’s not as good as back then in the 90’s but then again, what is. I mean have you even watched Family Guy this season. Apart from episode 1, it’s unbearable to watch. Bobs burgers is funny but ratings wise, it’s dreadful.
Regarding The simpsons, I think that as long as people still watch it (and enjoy it), they should keep it on.
beyonce is gonna judge amrcan idol on saturday and sunday in 2016 amrcan idol thime song club cant handle me by flo rida on saturday and sunday in 2016.

No…..Married with Children is the best fox show of all time!
How someone in the world can think that has me baffled, Worst show in history.
Deadline reported that episode 1 had a 4.0 rating and 8.805 million viewers. This was from the week of the Nielsen glitch so the ratings must have changed. Please check out this link:

Thanks for the info!
Deadline reports that episode 1 had a 4.0 rating and 8.805 million viewers. I think this is to do with the Nielsen glitch. Look at this link:

Thanks for the link. I’d corrected as much of the data from the Nielsen glitch weeks as I could find but this list includes even more shows (Simpsons included) so I’m going back and checking the data again. Sorry it’s taken me some time to get back to you. This whole thing’s been a big headache but I try to be as accurate as possible.
Oh my god no! The Simpsons must NEVER be cancelled. The only excuse it can ever have to cancel is if Matt Groening dies, which is unlikely since he is only 60.
But, if a long-running show ends just because somebody important behind the show has died, then that somebody must want it to be a good thing that he has died, and that really wouldn’t be a good thing at all.
Just let “The Simpsons”‘s original run last as long as it wants, because it’ll be more of a CHORE to watch now.
According to tv by the numbers Episode 7 had 6.70 million viewers. Not 6.635
Thanks, I missed that one when I was updating to the finals.
“Do you think it should ever be cancelled?” — this question alone just proves how evil these animated “floating timeline” shows really are. Live-action / on-camera scripted shows come and go only for these exact same animated shows to keep getting renewed year after year. It doesn’t help that 20-year-old animated shows are a lot cheaper to produce than live-action shows and one episode takes so long (9 months) to produce. The Simpsons only gets a demo rating of 3.0 or above because of late-afternoon NFL football games on the Fox network. Hate when its ratings go up like that… Read more »
CANCEL IT!! I don’t let my grand kids watch it and the rest of the family hates it!
someone’s a bit overprotective..
Cancel a show just because a show you and your idiotic family hates? Screw you, sir.
